What was the news update at the beginning? Went to Wikipedia and searched 1991. The newsworthy events they have for March 3 was a plane crash in Colorado that killed 25, Estonia and Latvia voting for independence from the USSR, and the release of some videotape of the Rodney King/police incident that occurred the day before.
For some weird reason, POR vs. BOS games in the 80's and early 90's were usually classics. The Blazers were the only team to win in the Boston Garden in 1986. Bill Walton and Jim Paxson played for BOS; Danny Ainge for Portland. There was a mini rivalry between these two teams. Okay, maybe not. But at the very least the games usually went down to the wire, and it seems like Larry Bird hit an unbelievable shot in the closing seconds in about 3 out of 4 games. This game was an exception.

Little known fact: if you pause the game at 44:39, you'll see that the Blazers made by far the greatest comeback in NBA history in this game.
