My Dad and my uncle never stopped playing this album when i was a kid, I have just bought it now 30 odd years later, the memories, music, arrangement have me in rapture. Mate (Bloberry) you are a top man for posting this.
Harry was the first of rock's generation to do the "revisit the standards and big band ballads" way before Linda Rondstadt and Rod Stewart. He was one of a kind Harry was. If Buddy Holly had lived he might have beat Harry to this type of music (think "True Love Ways") but fate dealt Harry the card. Miss 'em both.
@ChasBeauregarde Technically Ringo beat him to the punch with "Sentimental Journey" in 1970, but they were great mates and very much on the same wavelength on a lot of things. Nilsson did a better job anyway. :)
I have thnked you for posting this magnificent video many times. Don't think that any one who's heard doesn't fel the same! He IS my favorite singer/songwriter of all times.
@michaelthorner Harry Nilsson - A little touch of schmilsson in the night- is available on DVD plus there are five extra tracks that were not on the old cassette tape. RCA/LEGACY 82876 78248 2 cheers
@osmanperson I believe it's available on cd, but the dvd doesn't appear in any of the Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, or Sony/Legacy website databases. Hmm... I'll keep looking...
Does anyone else wish RCA would re-release this album without the overbearing, and often corny, strings? They aren't quite as bad in this video, but the strings really killed the album. Sometimes you can barely hear Harry singing.
Thanks for posting this. I watched this on TV with my dad (Sinatra fan) one night after I had taken my then girlfriend now wife home. My dad liked how the intro to one song was followed by Harry singing another. I bought my dad the LP when it was released, I now have the CD version with the extra tracks.
This video brings back memories of that night, unfortunately my father passed in 1975. Thanks to Harry for a great night and the memories it holds.
My wife gave this to me for a b/day present. We didn't know what was on it. Lights down and listening was _______ ! 1973 Too bad this isn't available on DVD.
I've been listening to this album since it was released...in every format as technology changed. Brilliant seeing this now...feels like coming full circle!
Everyone has their own taste, though. The arrangements are quite lush a flowery, which not everyone likes. I personally think Harry's voice suits dryer and more minimalist backing.
Hi Bloberry, I'm again listen and viewing this incredible document. And I'd like to put this commentary by Derek Taylor, because I red it in the backover of the vinyl and it goes finnaly more or less like this: "...when times are tough -and they are right now-, we need, all of us, whatever your age, whatever your lifestyle, whatever our pain.... we need a Little touch of Schmilsson in the night"; and is a privilege to have that little touch of Schmillson in the night
When I get to Heaven I'm running to hear Harry sing forever...and I'll bet John and George Harrison and Robert Palmer will be jamming along. May they feel each moment of joy we still get here from the their music. LOVE YOU HARRY!
Nilsson sings beautifully but whoever did the orchestration should be shot. Way too over-orchestrated. These were lovely classical songs sung with artistry and musicality by songwriter who knew the value in investing life in other songwriters' lyrics.
my friend; orchestral arrangements were done by the great GORDON JENKINS who was famous for his LUSH arrangements for the likes of NAT KING COLE, FRANK SINATRA and more!
I've still got the vinyl and just got the turntable working. Unfortunately, my LP was so heavily played that it's full of pops. But I didn't kow there was video on this until I tripped over your 5-parter here. THANK YOU. I'll bet Harry and brother John (Lennon) are having a hoot in heav... make that Hell (where the parties are much better.)
Thank you for posting this video. My brother Hans van Twist loved the music of Harry. Unfortunately my brother died in 1997; his souls lives on, thanks to the music by Hharry.
I bought three copies of this when it came out, and still have mine on vinyl! Oh, my, how absolutely, breathtakingly enchanting! It broke my, broke my, broke my heart when Harry died in such sad circumstances. Oh, I couldn't stand it! Thank GOD his music stays and stays. Oh, Harry. Miss you!
I still have the album on vinyl. Thanks Bloberry for sharing this with the world. How amazing to see it now as it was recorded. Love the way the BBC record stuff visually and record it, even way back then - cue Bowie's BBC album. Full credit to them. Long may it continue. And you can see that Harry is full of love for Gordon's arrangement when he looks up at him. Brilliant. Thank you.
I'm truly blown away listening to this. I wasnt really familiar with this LP. Phenomenal! It could be said Nilsson was a pioneer/visionary in many ways. In the late 60s he prototyped the whole singer songwriter genre before JT, Carly, Carole King and this album predated Linda Rondstadt doing covers of 30's 40s standards "What's New" by 5 or 6 years. What an innovator.
This is also one of my favorite albums. It came out when I was in college and I still listen to it today. His album helped me rediscover these fabulous old songs with their wonderful melodies and inspired lyrics. Nilsson was greatly underappreciated during his lifetime. He was a genuine artist who has left us a remarkable body of work.
only Harry could pull this off.I dare anyone to name another singer that could do such a great job as Harry...I'm waiting.....RiP hope you found it Harry
Thank you so much, Bloberry! Thanks for the memory. I love Harry Nilsson, and this is a sweet surprise. Love you, Nilsson fans. See you on Facebook or somewhere, over the mountain :-)
Youtube is amazing !! This must be the recording from which the album was made - the phrasing is exactly the same. Must be 30 years since I last listened to this but still fresh in the memory. Many thanks
No... this is a BBC special done in a TV studio done to promote the album but it uses the same orchestra, arranger, and (of course) singer. The album was recorded over five days in CTS studios.
I always loved this album, even when it first came out. I had fallen in love with his voice about 5 albums before this one. Not making it to this particular album was his version of Over the Rainbow - the VERY BEST! Love ya, Harry. Thanks for the video!
I have just noticed something - this was filmed in 1973 - one year before I was born, so my mother can't have been such a little girl after all! Still, she clearly has very fond memories of the moment she shared with my grandparents. I don't remember it too well myself as I was still in the womb at the time!
Hi Bloberry. How and where did you get this footage? It is incredible. My mother told me how she watched this on BBC with my grandparents when she was a little girl. I grew up listening to the vinyl and bought it myself on CD. I know and love every note of every song, now my children love it. I wish I could get it on DVD so my children can watch it with their great grandmother. wouldn't that be amazing? Please help. Thank you so much. Generations of great memories.

One of my all time favorite albums. I have been in love with Gordon Jenkins arranging for many years. He paints incredible pictures with his music.
Another Great album with Jenkins is Nat King Coles "Love Is The Thing."
Thanks for this great opportunity to actually SEE Jenkins in action.
