Obviously, I've never seen it as an adult . . .but I LOVED this series as a kid. Well, i was in high School . .so not toooo much of a kid. It was silly and funny. And no, had nothing to do with ghostbusters except that there were two guys who dealt with the supernatural. One was a believer, one was a skeptic . . .it was more pre-historic X-Files and funny Kolchek the Night Stalker than anything . . .

This was supposed to be a TV version of the movie Ghostbusters, wasn't it?

I think so. Brian Grazer produced it I believe . That might explain why you see Ron Howard here promoting it. It was bad, really bad.
