@GreenDookieDay The Replacements, and even Westerberg's solo music endeavers were so very underrated and overlooked. Sad to say - most did not see and appreciate the depth of their lyrics - except of course their fans :)
@rockinroller7 I don't know if Paul didn't like his words but later on he decide one guitar and understandable lyrics were better than the semi-punk songs. Johnny's gonna Die is a great song .. but I think you put that in your collection a long time ago.
@rockinroller7 Oh I think I was referring to Johnny's Gonna Die - live .. which is my top 1 or 2 from the replacements. Just one on YT and maybe part of a mix.
but when you were growing up there was good music and bad music too... did you hear much about the good underground bands or mainly what was popular ones? youre streotyping all youth today to listen to lady gaga and nicelback. there always has, and will be good music in the world as long as you know how to look for it...
i hope this made sense... it was kinda hard to put my thoughts into words.
@youvebeennatalied If one great up in the sixtees, no there was some bad music but rarely was it all that popular and there was a ton of great records .. just look at Billboard and weep about how one week could have so many great songs on some weeks. Not all classics just great songs. Hey anybody realize how great Paul's voice is ... better than Streisands
@youvebeennatalied the Velvet Underground and the MC5 were never famous...they simply influenced rock music. My favorite line is "The velvets only sold like 3000 copies of their first album...but everyone who bought it started a band".
@youvebeennatalied Yeah, it's really weird to hear people claim that the 70s or 80s were some tremendous era for music compared to today. Pop in the 70s, and particularly in the 80s, was absolutely atrocious. Disco, the most vapid and unfulfilling music ever, completed dominated the 70s. And the equally shitty new wave music dominated the 80s. The Replacements were a flower that grew out of shit. They were an exception, not the norm.
@seriussam101 You're right about those eras, but at least the musicianship was (almost always) there. Today's pop music is not only sterile and unfulfilling, but devoid of talent as well. Think Soulja Boy, Ke$ha, Brokencyde.
Beautiful, as is all Replacements, Westerberg, et al. The understatement is missed on the current generation of Nickelback idiots. I hope there is something equivalent out there now, but I doubt it. Such glorious memories, though.
Interesting as it may seem, my generation of current thirty-something Gen-Xers for the most part have much better taste than a lot of the facetious youngsters of today, but unfortunately I have been sorely surprised and let down at times by those of my own age group. Just like the youth of today, my cohorts were also raised on Nickelodeon. Only difference is we were exposed to the subtle sophistication of 'You Can't Do That On Television.'
@kgrumm No equivalency is out there. Nickelback at least makes a few decent songs not that I would buy them or go out of my way to listen but I don't turn 'em off.
@kgrumm - come on man... i'm an old fart too... but not too old to have forgotten that people had shit taste when i was a kid, too. good music was ignored or worse scorned by the lovers of big hair bands and madonna and rick astley. so stop being like those old fucking hippies and boomers we hated wien we were 19.....
Fantastic. Not having to watch a bunch of antics makes me pay attention to how awesome the song is. Not to mention how great the lyrics and Paul's voice are!!!

"The ones who love us best are the ones we'll lay to rest
And visit their graves on holidays at best
The ones who love us least are the ones we'll die to please
If it's any consolation, I don't begin to understand them" - unbelievable lyrics

"Clean your baby womb, trash that baby boom.
Elvis in the ground, there ain't no beer tonight.
Income tax decduction, what a hell of a function,
'It beats pickin' cotton,, and waitin' to be forgotten."
Surely so much to say in only one verse, makes it hard to stop listening.
Even if Paul? didn't like what he heard.
(Kinda want to do the same to my computer when I hear the auto insurance commercial at the end-Fuck!!!!!)
Peace.
