@problynevergonnause The best leather is called Herman Oaks. You can find it online and sometimes in the Tandy Shops. When you are just learning, It's best to start with the cheap tandy stuff since yer gonna have a lot of waste.
what do your knuckles say? btw great job, your an amazing artist, im looking to get into leather work do you know a good website to use to get leather and leather crafting supplies
The sites you want to visit are Tandy Leather and Hidecrafters. There are others but those are a good start. Ebay is a good source for tools and scraps as well.
I'd like to see more whoring from you because you're good with this stuff and you never advertise. Really, people are ok with some advertising. I spend a lot of time on twitter and people are very tolerant of a bit of advertising from people who are real people and don't treat others like numbers. Your work is unique and personal. Surely there's some cafe/restaurant in L.A. that would love to have furniture made the way you do it. Hell, you could make leather nametags for servers.
@P00P0STER0US Yeah I consider upping the advertising slightly but the leather and furniture stuff really have a very specific audience who respond to it. So, we shall see. Right now I am working on a book of how to create certain kinds of furniture.
@thechurchofdave I'm sure you know your audience though I'd have to note that your site isn't linked in a place that's easy for me to find. Well, not on twitter or youtube anyway or at least not where I went digging. Anyway my point is that regardless of where your audience lives, a link is free. And people like me would be happy to tweet or otherwise whore some current videos that get people interested in the hand-crafted authenticity of your work.
@P00P0STER0US Almost all of my videos have links to my website in the description box. I stopped adding them the last couple months because 1. it wasn't generating any business and 2. garageband (the place I give out my free mp3s) gave notice that it was going to close.
Since garageband was closing, I have to modify the links on all 130+ videos. So I am waiting until I decide where my mp3s are going before I go back to adding links.
@thechurchofdave Good call. I noticed that you link your mp3 download site on your main channel, and it's a bummer that youtube doesn't allow more than one link. I tried the garageband link and it didn't work for me. Since your viewers know you make music, perhaps you can link both your product site and your music site in the description, and put your product site on your channel.
At this point you're probably annoyed with me but I'm ok with that.
Nice video, I understand how hard it is to get 10 minutes of anything let alone you made a 50+ minute into 10... I really like what you say about critiquing your own work and how your so close with it what you don't like others can love. I shared it on my facebook wall...Nice to meet you Scary Dave, I did not know who you were before tonight and I am so glad I found this video. Awesome Dude!
Dude if u sold to native american dancers. U'd make so much no joke. I've been trying to make a turtle on leather but thought it was impossible. DO u do custom orders
@nativehoney5 I would love to work for the dancers. I have actually done trades with a silver smith in Santa Fe. I would be more than happy to do your turtle for you. Custom orders are what I do most.
@ASSEMblerEX : There seem to be enough people doing acorns and oak leaves or Sheridan style stuff. I am bout to go into Steampunk stuff though. We shall see. Right now I like tattoo influenced stuff.
Hello there! i think yo are a great artist...I too am an artist, but I never worked with leather...Can you please sennd me a list of the tools you used in this vid as well as what kind of paint or ink,,,,please. Thank you and keep up the great work!
GrayBird28 : You can get a good start with a basic tool set from Tandy leather or ebay or hide crafters. A swivel knife, smooth and checkered bevelers a mallet/maul and a leather working spoon is all you really need to do figure carving.
mfalzon: I do not make my own tools but a person could.
I have heard of a guy who uses nothing but a sharpened fathead screwdriver.
Anything can be done once you practice enough I suppose. If you want to make your own tools try going through catalogues and looking at the tools for sale and then copy them. Bevelers are the most important tools to have.
thanks for the video man. I am about start working with leather and I appreciate people like you giving advice and techniques. As an artist in the computer media, I am also critical of my work, just comes with the territory. My "crap" is something someone else really likes. Very weird...
There will be plenty more of this sorta stuff coming in the near future. I am looking forward to doing lots more "How to" videos on various types of useful art.
What y'all need to remember is this: No onew was born knowing how to do stuff. Anyone who is good at anything got there by making mounds of crap. I carve wood and turn wood, and every project goes throw what I call the 'crap stage' or the 'why-did-I ever-think-this-was-a-good-idea-its-never-gonna-turn-out-the-way-I-picture-it' stage. I sell my finished goods, and jocan is right, the customers never see all the flaws you do. We are all our own harshest critic.
Thanks so much for posting your video! It was great to watch you; I just started learning the art of tooling leather and it is interesting to see how efficiently (is that the word I want?) you tool. Thanks again!
I hear ya about being critical of your own work. I also do leather work and I ALWAYS find problems with my finished pieces, but then the customer just raves and raves. Go figure huh? I also then to under price stuff as I don't see it as I should. Thanks for saying you critique your pieces too. Now I'm gonna go make me a coffin bookmark for some Dean Koontz books!
poosaypirate: I get my tools from a number of sources. Tandy leather is a good place to start out. Once you know what you want, Ebay is a great place to get tools as well. I Have even done well placing anted ads on craigslist.
The dye in this video is from Tandy but is no longer available. They do sell a new line of products which are good enough. If you are in or near a large city, you should look for a company which supplies shoe repair or manufacture shops. They will have leather dye.
leokimvideo: A link to the new channel can be found in the description for this video. If yer fast, you might win the bragging rights of being the very first subscriber ;)
GeishaCat I have made many book covers and have one which needs to get done so yet I will make a video on it soon. Please subscribe to my new channel (primitivecustoms) where all my new "how to" videos will be posted.
As for leather burning, I have toyed with it and it seemed fun. I have seen some pretty decent results from other people. You can get an inexpensive wood burning kit from most craft stores and it works well.
Thats pretty awsome. I have always seemed to get the concept of just about anything when it comes to basic drawing, but drawing the detail on wood like that is not easy. Especially on leather with a knife lol
I have been doin this for about 4 years or so. It took me about 6 months to get a good hobby level and between a year and two years to get to where I felt like a pro.
thank you for a great tutorial it was enjoyable and what ya said is true ive saved all my art exept what i gave to family someone else will enjoy it once i get itup for sale 12 long years of painting im going to get my leather coats and paint them up
opticon12000 : I am using a leather die which is unfortunately no longer available. Check with shoe repair supply houses or leather hobby shops to find out what is available now.
Beatleologist : The bike was, sadly, sold to finance my move to be closer to my kids. I'll build a duplicate someday though. I have online auctions and a web site and merchandising being assembled right now. For examples of my work see the video "ScaryDAve and my leather biker artwork" Pretty much, if you can think of it, I can make it. Within reason.
Hey neat DAve. A craft I haven't tried yet, got some tools passed on by a relative, will have to try it out. Thanks for showing us how. Maybe I'll try some 'show and tell' when I have a camera...gawd knows when.
Oddsweb : "Where you painting on stain?" I wanted the cross to look old so I painted over the x-1. This way when I sealed and polished it (steps not shown) some of the color rubbed off to give it a slightly aged look.
Addicted2YT : "i'd love some custom work created" Not as much as I woudl love to make it for you :) Just a few of the things I make : Key chains, book covers, book markes, patches, pockets, belts, guitar straps, bracelets, jacket backs, custom biker anything, spur straps, dog collars, leashes, handbags, masks, the list is endless. My art, your art, whatever you like.
I actually have this sort of carving pen which burns surfaces (pyrograph pen? I forgot the name). I might be able to use that kind of tool too.
Oh, I actually made a crappy book cover out of carton with this tool haha (I used an old binder and ripped the plastic of the carton). I should show it to you sometimes!
Anyways, nice work. Keep on doing what you love :D
hinoraito : The first liquid I put on the leather was called X-1 an it's a tandy product. It sits in the cracks an wipes off the surface. It is for making the cuts stand out. The die I painted the cross with is no longer available. Wood burning (soldering irons) tools are fun to work with for certain things. Also available (with custom tips) at hobby and craft shops)
Good tools (in my opinion) are quite expensive. You can find some cool stuff on ebay though. It's not so much that each tool is pricey so much as there are just sooooo damn many of them.
budgray18 : I really don't know what kinda rock my table is made out of. I have two pieces on green and one black I used the green one in this video so it would actually show up on camera. BOth are scraps from counter tops. Granite is the best but marble will do (as I am told)
yea lol my dad is a carpet salesman here in dallas and is well known too... but hes showed me some granite and marble and it looks like granite, teh high dollar stuff too..
we got our kiten decked out in(counter tops 3cm thick.. that means the thik ness of the counter top)
That really is some nice work. It is kinda inspiring me to go thru with my Idea to do a series on tilesetting. Educational for the most part, But I want o finish it with a fancy ass mosaic :-P As always you are teh man!
The original recording was over an hour long and included stories about my teacher and my learning process as well as my philosophy about art. How much does leather cost.
dropdeadugly100 2 years ago
dropdeadugly100: Depends upon the quality, thickness and brand. Roughly speaking it's around 3-6 bucks a square foot.

depens on the leather type. Best leather form the supreme shift is most expensive (about 1-4 mm thick) costs about 110 euros for 2.5 square meters
