You've certainly lit the fire Greenpeace... this campaign will go down in the history of the subcontinent - as proof that no individual center of power is all powerful. Or that it is immune to the active choice of the masses.
Its been a long time coming, but the history of India's mass environmental consciousness has finally begun!
I really hope these wonderful beings of the sea make it.
Beautiful Greenpeace. Change the environment and we will have MORE starvation. These big companies do not care about most humans ... only ones who can afford cars and even then they are only a sales statistic.
As recognised by the law, and ordered by the High Powered Committee in November 2006, the rights of passage through the core area and harvest marine resources in the buffer zone of the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, and through the no-fishing zones at Devi and Rushikulya, should be implemented in practice immediately.
Dear Bithun86, Greenpeace does support the demands of the OTFWU re passage thru core area of GMS, Devi and Rushikulya, these demands have been upheld by the CEC of the Supreme Court. BTW, Paradip is closer to 40 km. away from the mass nesting beaches. We have no idea what impact it caused when it was built in the 60s, but we do know there is no mass nesting within 20-30 km. As for the wealth brought by Paradip, visit the fishing villages near the port, they struggle to get 1 sq meal a day!
And finally the paradeep port which is hardly situated at the distance of 20 kms from the Olive ridley nesting site, is a major port and was opened to traffic in 1965 and is functioning since then. It didn't have any major impact on the behavior of olive ridley turtles, but it had a major impact on the socio economical development of the state and the humans dwelling in that particular region.
@Bithun - Are you saying that the villagers in Dhamra are going to get rich because of this port? Or is it just gonna make the head honchos at Tata & L&T richer than they already are?
Btw, there are many Oriyas against the port. The OTFWU representing over 100,000 of them.
Would you like to destroy the rare natural beauty of your state for the sake of quick money?
Well no doubt TATA & L&T get rich but yeah the villagers of Dhamra would too(Viz. paradip which is one of the most economically flourishing lands now)..
Odisha Traditional Fish Worker's Association's original basis and primary reason for the protest is complete different compared to the greenpeace's turtle conservation stance. Their primary demands are much more inclined to fishing and the socio economical welfare of the fishermen in costal odisha which they fear would be affected by the port.
Because of unemployment, poverty..hundreds of people die in the state coz of starvation, thousands migrate over to other state in search of better opportunity
How does green peace Justify Hundreds of Human deaths because of unemployment and poverty??
for the HYPOTHETICAL cause and cost of saving the lives of hundred turtles.
I bet the 90% of greenpeace activists haven't visited or aren't even aware of the wretched conditions of the area.
Well personally i don't support green peace of this act. do you guys have any idea of what an impact the port is going to have on the state of Odisha???
The state which people from other states consider taboo to the nation, ridicule and laugh at for being the poorest state..WHy doesn't green peace raise enough money and give it over to the state to meet the economic benefits that the state is going to have from the port over years. Majority of the people from the state are in favor of the port
This is amazing guys!! I will continue to support you. keep up the good work!! :) I really truly hope Mr Ratan Tata listen's to this protest... its been too long!!
Green peace we all are there to support you....these turtles are just so awesome....i saw a pic in which the this olive ridley turtle was dead....it was very shocking..
why doesnt RATAN TATA understand...it sometimes makes me angry....great job greenpeace... and yaah... we will win it... we will save these turtles
Hopefully, somewhere out in the multiverse, giant turtles are dredging out and cementing over helpless board rooms full of ageing tycoons and rabid industrialists. All in the name of progress.
Could Greenpeace give some evidence on what TATA is doing wrong, or are we supposed to blindly believe you without any proof. Shows us proof, or a link to proof instead of making a cool video without any facts.
All the info on the issue is available on the campaign website which is shown at the end of the video and in the description.
Specifically you should click on 'Docs', and there you'll find a pdf signed by scientists from around the world stating that a proper assessment has not been done on the effects posed by the port to the environment in the area. Hope this helps man :)
Way to Go...I think this seems to be the best way to raise an awareness on many issues. Moreover there will definitely be a lot of Visibility,Confidence and Strength gained from the Collective Minds for picking up steam.
well.....call me a cynic......but I haven't seen an iota of evidence that something like this is happening........good movement n all, but where's the proof.......can't make judgements without them.......can we?
@Kunal - it's good to not blindly believe, but if you do a google search you will find a lot of voices talking about this issue. And if you don't believe all the media reports, science sites, NGOs and blogs out there, well there's nothing I can really say.
Tatas, people of India, consider only one company which is responsible. I think by defying the call to shift Dhamra port, you have suffered a huge blow to your reputation of a responsible organization.
Wake, listen to the call of people. Don't damage the nature, don't damage the natural breeding ground of the Olive Ridley Turtles.
I dont knw why the port construction is still going on ...?? bcoz Tatas has always been a socially and environmentally aware brand...this episode has put them in a bad light! Hope they stop work at least until a proper scientific study is done!!
awesome videos ...guys ....Tata's should realize that they will be held accountable for their actions......and remember it was the turtles that won in the end .....kudos to Greenpeace to fight for a just and a noble cause.
I hope this video is the turning point in the campaign and it finally sinks in that the TATAs can't go ahead with the construction with so many people opposing it!
they also tried to grab fertile farmlands and wetlands for their small car project.
