  • Great video. Extremely informative and helpful.

  • Weren't you using your drill backwards?

  • Thanks a lot for the video guide. I just did the same mod and have seen a huge improvement in the wifi signal. It now streams 720p over the air beautifully.

  • I Think its best to use a Homeplug Adapter " Powerline Ethernet Adapter " Your Internet Signal Travels through the Electric cables through your house gives you better signal. You can buy them on Amazon.co.uk for about £40.00 or Higher.

The WIFI SIgnal is No Good To Weak

  • Hi, I have a Acer Aspire Revo R3700 which is great but lacks the esata port that this model has but the solder points and the whole where it used to be is still there, do you know of anywhere you can get the parts that were in this version which I could solder into the newer version?

  • @shakeuk Sorry I don't know, but I think there are Revo forums out there somewhere, and they would surely be able to help you.

  • - and specifications (pleace to buy) for the RAM too, if you please? :)

  • Hi there,

That's amazing. I was just looking to change my wifi-card because I have a hard time getting it to work in Linux, but I think I might do this tweak too, just to boost the signal.

I just have a few questions, if that's okay:

    - This will work on the Acer Revo R3610, right?

    - Have you got any specifications (or places to buy) both the antenna and the card?

  • @larsenpedersen Yes, this was done on a R3610. The antenna was just any old one from ebay - just pick one that's the length you want with a decent DB gain number. The WiFi card I'd previously replaced the stock one with (see my other Revo video) was an "HP BCM4321 broadcom 4321 802.11n wifi Mini PCI-E Card" It cost £8.50 from Ebay.

  • Im guessing that I cant do this on the AR1600 modle?

  • Hi there, I got a question. I'm going to add an 7dbi antenna to my laptop. My laptop is using Intel 5300 abgn WLAN card which has 3 U.FL port that is connecting to each antenna. So, will it matter if I add 1 new antenna to it by replacing the gray one just as you said in this video? And what is the other 2 for?

  • @maxchu92 Unfortunately I don't know the answer to these questions.

  • Nevermind. Thanks, for the reply.

  • I'm about to do this to my Mum's R3700. Wifi is pretty much non-existent. Parts purchased on eBay should be arriving shortly! Huge thanks for this video!!

  • @MrJonnyJones Just completed this on the R3700. Like another guy I took out the plastic that was blanking off the eSATA hole on the front below the audio jacks and mounted the antenna through that hole. No drilling required! The signal is now up to 150mb/sec - massively increased! I took the original antenna out of the R3700 as it was just a waste of space. A piece of metal, that's all it is. Shocking! Bad form Acer! Thanks again for this video, valuable information!

  • thanks, awesome video. i did the mod and it works great. one thing, if you have the ar3700-u3002, you don't have to drill the case. I took out the plastic plug that they use to cover the hole for the sata connector and was able to screw down the RP-SMA in the stock opening. of course, there will be spaces on the sides since the hole is rectangular, but at least you don't have to drill the case. and it's in the front so perfect for a protruding antenna.

  • Can't I just buy a better internal wireless card ? I don't want to through all that trouble of drilling a hole in the machine.

  • @theoneadamk It looks so simple... Where's my drill!?

  • you have the best reviews!

    :D

  • I did this upgrade and must have done the hole to high, the case does not close - be sure you dont do that, drill the whole lower

  • @gamepanel Good tip - I'll put it on the video as an annotation. Sorry to hear about your mishap - I must have been lucky.

  • @Techmoan cool! ya i took a pic today of it - im sellin mine on ebay - and noticed im like really 1/8" to high, lol - only a hair off :(

  • Great idea, might do this with my BT home hub (granite walls and all that).

  • This is an awesome video, thanks for that mate. On question though. Can I do this with the existing Wifi-card in the machine(a 3700)?

    Thank you

  • @neldeberg Yes, no problem. The connectors and the results are the same.

  • just done this to my revo r3700

the signel was 30% 50mpps before

    its now 70% 150mpps

  • @shakennstirred Good to hear about success stories, well done and thanks.

  • I have a 1600 and it didn't come with WIFI. Does it have a Mini PCI express slot like this his model? I'm more interested in using the slot for a SSD.

  • @abergethirty I'm not familiar with this model

  • @Techmoan It's the same thing only it has a single core Atom Proccessor. I have an ethernet hub and didn't really need WIFI so I 'm getting a Mini PCI-E TV card. I drilled out the same hole as you only plan to use Cable TV coax connector out the hole instead of an Antenna Connector. Thanks for the germ of the idea.

  • @abergethirty watch?v=A-2rgQ3ytiM&feature=related

  • wow, well done dude, very clever

  • Yet another awesome Acer Revo modification video, as they say in the world of hip hop "You da man!" Excellent job thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you for posting this video. I may go this route for my Acer Veriton. It's the bigger badder cousin to the Revo, with slightly more RAM, but it's got really crappy wi-fi reception. I thought it was because of the distance between the PC and the router (basement and 2nd floor room), but I have a netbook that I've used in the same room with good reception. This will be cheaper than getting another router as a repeater.

  • I had the same problem with my revo in the livingroom. Very poor download rate via wifi. After I did this as shown in your video, I have now a download rate wich is 5 times higher than before. And all this for 12 Euros an 15 minutes of work. Thank you very much. Greetings from Germany

  • @meaningoff I appreciate you reporting in with your positive result. I think you are the first person who has carried out the aerial mod and confirmed that it worked for them as well. Many thanks.

  • @Techmoan, have you given any thought to using 2 external antennae?

Your wifi card seems to support 300Mbps and my understanding is that this requires using two streams at once with two antennae.

So you have one external antenna giving you good reception, but the other one is still the Revo's poor second internal antenna.

However I may be wrong as I am only just starting to investigate the issue (also suffering from poor performance on a Revo!)

  • @voodoochyld You might well be right. In the end I bought an Apple Airport express to use as a repeater for my Airport Extreme (to improve wireless signals for various other devices in the house) so this means I get a brilliant signal everywhere in the house. I'd be interested to hear if two connectors works better for you. No one ever got back to me to confirm if this aerial mod worked well for them.

  • dude, it's the dude from topgear

  • I really enjoy your videos. Such a pleasant change to find a sensible commentary with information and without some cack music. I'm considering the new Revo R3700 myself

  • very well made tutorial and also very inexpensive to upgrade the wireless. I didn't realize how low the built in wireless was but that's awesome that it could be improved. Keep up the great work

  • I have the same Revo also and the wifi signal is just horrible. Much respect to you putting this up on youtube.

  • First, thanks a lot for this! I followed your instructions and did the same changes on my Revo - except for the card which I didn't change. Now my problem is: nothing changed! At all. And I discoverd something quite strange: whether the internal or external antennas are connected or not, the signal doesn't change. I am seriously confused. Do you think this could be a problem with the card? Thanks again, I hope you or someone might help

  • @AND2EP That is strange. You are the first person who has reported back with their results- so it would be helpful if some others could report back to confirm how they got on. Perhaps the problem i was experiencing had more to do with the 5ghz signal. However you should definitely notice a change in signal if you unplug the internal aerials, so something strange is definitely going on, perhaps someone else could comment further.

  • @Techmoan I lose the connection when I unplug the black cable that goes under the wifi card, but nothing changes when I unplug the shorter grey cable that connects to the little device in the corner. And the the external aerial doesn't change things. That's so depressing! Do you think a 802.11N card could make a difference? My router is a DLink Dir-615, which I understand supports N wifi, but runs on 2.4 ghz.

  • wow i do like you mod on you, dont have that system yet but i have a mate you has one laying around i might take it off him and try this for myself, i just need something to connect to my system to watch

  • THANK YOU for the easy-to-follow and extremely useful guide. I purchased all three components of the system (5ghz mini pci card, 5ghz antenna, and cable) for 21USD via ebay. Certainly a worthy investment. I ordered a longer cable and I will hopefully be installing the antenna on a different area of the Revo's case (as I keep it on its stand). Again, thanks so much for the guide!

  • @mtepstein Glad I could help. Thanks for the feedback.

  • James May? Is that you?

  • Could I buy a more powerful ariel so I can get a better connection?

  • Nice tutor, this what I mean

  • Very nice and practical video. I did exactly that and got improved signal. Brilliant. There is one got-cha though. You have to watch the little mounting snap near the area where antenna socket is to be mounted. You must have the hole drilled low enough to not obstruct that mounting part. Other than that it is perfect. Thanks!

  • I wanted to run 802.11n at 5ghz as my Apple airport extreme uses this frequency. The internal wifi on my model was 802.11 b/g only and I could only find external USB wifi adaptors that worked on 2.4ghz. However it was relatively easy to find an internal wifi card that worked at 5ghz, so I swapped it over.

  • TEchmoan,

Just wondering why you changed the wifi card in the Revo for another one before you put on the external antenna?

    THanks,

  • nice to finally see a modification explained in ENGLISH without loads of "uuurrmmmmm" inbetween every sentance lol. Top man! im considering doing some case modding to mine so it lights up like blackpool tower :D

  • Hi Techmoan. First of all...AMAZING! Now I would like to do the same to my revo as my time capsule is capable of N and my current wifi card not. However, when I looked into it (I'm new to this) I could only find antennas on 2.4ghz explicitly saying that they are only for a/b/g. Is this true? Will there be an improvement with those antennas nevertheless? If not, where could I order an antenna capable of 5ghz. Looked hard but couldn't find. Hope you can help!

  • @blueiceberg2010 The aerial I used was just a standard (presumably 2.4ghz) aerial and it works fine. I'm not sure if there is a difference between 2.4ghz and 5ghz or b/g/n aerials - they just seem to be a piece of wire in a plastic coating although I may be wrong.

It might be a daft question - but I assume you are also replacing the wifi card with a 5ghz N device as well.

  • @Techmoan Thanks a million. I think I'm gonna go for the 2.4 ghz from Amazon as I can order it right away with my wifi card (and as you used it as well). I'm thinking of buying the intel wireless link 5100. Thanks once again for your help!!

  • @blueiceberg2010 Also check ebay item no 290373728734 for a 5ghz aerial.

  • you have fast internet

  • have you though about swapping the hdd to a 7200rpm model or even an ssd?

  • @theflashjaxx I haven't - all of my media is streamed over my network from a Drobo with 4TB of storage. My HD inside the Revo just has the OS and apps on it.. I'd imagine that it wouldn't be a bad idea though for anyone using the internal HD.

  • Brilliant! Simple, practical and well documented. I will seriously consider voiding my warranty. =)

  • very nice, i did the same on mine :).

  • That is an absolutely textbook mod there mate, beautiful work!

  • hi again i was thinking of upgrading the graphics card and wonderd if you knew if it was possible or is the 9400 the only graphics card that will fit in these?

  • ok i got my revo now and my signal is quite poor and im using windows 7 and evrything seems to take ages to load and the internet is quite slow with me not getting much signal i use my laptop and the signal is great on that so i need something to boost my revo.

my wifi car is the 802.11 b/g so if i buy the external ariel and buy a adaptor u.fl cabe will that fit straight on to my wifi card and will it get me better signal?

im using my standard ornage livebox which i use for my broadband.

  • The standard b/g card has the same connectors so will attach to an external aerial just like mine. I can't guarantee that you will experience the same signal improvement that I got - but there is no reason why it wouldn't work for you too.

  • I love watching your videos

  • Hey, thanks a bunch - that comment has really brightened up my day. I just wish I had more stuff to talk about and more time to do it.

  • hi there i just bought a revo, not got it yet so dont know what signal i will get.

if i decide to do what you have done and getthe sma aerial and that lead thing do i need to change the internal wifi card?

alsowhat type of card will i need and can you give me a link to one?

also are they straigh forward to change or do i need to do abit of modifying?

  • Well I only replaced my stock card with a new one so that I could use my 802.11N network - rather than the 802.11B/G that the standard WiFi card could handle. If you are only using 802.11B/G you may find that the signal is fine (my B/G signal was OK - it was just the N that was too weak). However if you find you have poor B/G reception - then the standard WiFi card looks identical & uses the same connectors - it swaps out as easily as swapping a memory card in a camera (see my other Revo vid).

  • In my R3610 the stock Atheros AR5B91 wifi card is N capable, but only 2.4Ghz not dual band, 1080 should be fine if you have line-of-sight to your N router/AP

  • You are a true life hacker. Hats off to you!

  • I haven't really had time to test it out with 1080p - but as long as the video player software can keep up - then the wireless N signal will provide plenty of bandwidth., I don't think it's possible to stream 1080p smoothly via G (but I'm not 100% sure on this).

  • Pretty sure G can't handle the 1080 bitrate. Let me know if 1080 on N works out alright on the Revo. On the Revo, the standard Windows Media Player can't handle 1080 but Windows Media Player Classic with the right codecs, such as K-Lite can display 1080 very well.

  • OK - followed your advice and installed the K-Lite codec pack.

Tested using MPC and three 1080p x264s streamed over N from my networked drives.

One film played perfectly, but the other two stuttered. When I copied one of these to the Revo's internal HD & played from there- it still stuttered.

I assume that this x264s bitrate was too much for the Revo to play smoothly - but it's not the WiFis fault. I think that 802.11N is fast enough to stream anything the Revo can play.

    Hope this helps.

  • Puzzling. My Revo plays x264s in MKV containers always play perfectly fine off the HDD. If N wasn't the issue your side then that's certainly promising. Cheers for testing that.

  • Have the 4GB, 500GB HDD version myself. Glad to see someone is modding this little chap with success. I did laugh when you lifted the aerial up, due to the size of it... but as it's mounted on the bracket. Well done on the speed.increase. Is streaming 1080 better between G and N on the Revo?
