All her accomplishments came at a time when people had to actually GO OUT to buy music; getting huge numbers through downloads is easy. I didn't doubt that until 25 years later, though :) As you add more obscurities to your collection, your musical knowledge gets bigger too. So I'm pretty sure: the infectious synth backing was obviously inspired by a song from a couple years back, "THE REAL ME" from Neil Sedaka's daughter Dara from her first album "I'm Your Girlfriend" (1982).
