  • @edaerer16 no not really..

  • You don't see ANYONE drop ANYTHING in this color guard! Better than DCI.

  • Cant wait this is my fav. piece going to c them live tommorow

  • can you say Cadets 2011?

  • @SchilkeScreamer

how does that relate to this video?

  • @SchilkeScreamer Can you say Star of Indiana 1993...didn't think so!

  • @edaerer16 Yea STAR and GOD rest Mr. Cook!

  • @SchilkeScreamer can you say Crossmen 2009? lol the piece at the end is from Crossmen 2009 show Forbidden:) so cool

  • @MrMusicislife2012 Who are the crossmen? Are they angry?

  • @rldokman1 WHAAA???? only the only wrld class drum corps in texas!!!

  • hey des anyone knu wer 2 get those metal rifles

  • i actually played the orchestra version of this piece. this is pretty accurate and the trumpets do a really good job replacing certain violin solos

  • 10 woodwinds dislike this video ? Best use is for firewood!

  • I like how they use the same props from the 1993 Star of Indiana show.

  • 10 woodwinds dislike this video...

  • @TricoreSonata09 I love this but im a woodwind player ;w; *flutist*

  • @TricoreSonata09 Well, 294 other people likes it...

  • @NocturnalReality and you think we care why?

  • ok svolypet how can you compare this PROFESSIONAL drum core to a highschool marching band? well how would you expect to? they're professionals and highschoolers are not, so why would you talk bad about high schoolers who can't help where they are? marching bands are nothing less than drum corps. are you in a drum corp yourself because if you are you must be an adult, yet i don't understand why an adult would say such childish things...

  • @ohmigoditsL Age limit for drum corp is 21. Most of the people in the drum corp world that are marching the summers are between 16 and 21. Average age is 18, and most of those kids do corps in the summer, and then go home to their high school marching band to march the fall show.

  • man if Star of Indiana came back to DCI they would take it ALL!!

  • @molecular360 do you think think thay would own the blue devils?

  • @iroc1171 yes

  • @molecular360

their staff is scattered all across DCI, and the members are now staff spread all across DCI! It would likely be a very different drum corps

  • @molecular360 Don't forget that it has been a long time since Star was in the game. Also, most of the guys in blast are too old for DCI.

  • i think i want to do this :)

  • stars should go back to the field!!! i want them back!

  • Musicians, athlete and performer all rolled into one. Loved watching this thank you for posting.

  • i feel really stupid but what exactly is BLAST?

  • @euphonium2011 Blast! is the on-stage production series of professional performances that evolved from the Star of Indiana drum and bugle corps after its fold in 1993 (YouTube "Star of Indiana 1993" and watch the full retreat video for just a taste of how great the corps itself was).

  • Do you agree they should do stars 1991 roman images?

  • @CastleMKnights The second piece in the show is from the 1991 show.

  • @drwcubs No 2006!

  • @rldokman1 What in the world are you talking about?

  • my high school played this this year.. we sucked, horrible color guard and 4 outta 20 trumpets played..

  • Marching band it is not. See any woodwinds?

  • Blast! has always fascinated me, because it combined marching band elements with a stage and turned it all into a Broadway production. If you ever get the chance to see it live, TAKE IT!

  • intersting how the color guard used/repeated some of the choreography from Star's 1993 field show....kinda cool

  • excellent ensemble and great choreography

  • excellent ensemble and great choreography

  • didnt the Cadets play this in 05? Awesome! by the way

  • @molecular360 No - the close in 2005 was an original piece. Originally, we were supposed to play Medea. When the original piece was written to better reflect the theme - (I believe) a few Medea hits were kept in for fun.

  • This is an awesome show! Simple movement and equipment, but performed with such skill and precision that simple becomes amazing. Though I must admit those silks were beautiful in motion!

  • Our marching band played medea for our show last year....what an experience.

The show was - "The Canyon" by Phillip Glass "Adagio For Strings" by Samuel Barber "Medea's Dance of Vengance" by Samuel Barber

We came in second in our class but I think everybody in that stadium thought that we desevred it.

  • @dgd512 are you from Brentwood or is this a strange coincidence?

  • @dgd512 We had that exact show in 2004 and got 13th in grand nationals... what a ripoff!!!

  • @dgd512 search seminole off center on google video and you'll see it.

  • @Davertin if u thought this was retarted, remember this. when star of indiana did this show in 1993, it was the best show ever recorded and is compared with the shows today

  • @Jimmy852456 Goddamn right.

  • @Davertin if u thought this was retarted, remember this. when star of indiana did this song 1993, it was the best show ever recorded and is still compared with the shows today

  • @Davertin really, they do.

  • were can i see them in concert in spain?

  • blast is over

  • Win or lose Star was awesome and I came across their 93 snare book for that year minue the show music. I play it all the time to keep my chops , When I get a cam I will do an excerpt of two from it as well as the 1994 Colts show which was my age out year

  • I love all the conspiracy theory that surrounds the Star to Blast transformation. What I have heard is that Star had been planning to leave DCI before finals even happened. Possibly even before the season started.

  • Essentially correct...the contract with Canadian Brass was signed either before the season or early into it...certainly not as a response to losing to Garfield by 1/10th (something I'm familiar with from the 84 season)

Star was leaving DCI regardless...although if they'd won in 93 it probably would've quashed any stupid conspiracy theories.

  • @homfencing If Star had won in '93 I'm sure there would be people saying they left because they thought they were too good for the DCI activity. Speculation started coming around Star in full force before the '93 season, and unfortunately it's hard to stop a train.

  • watch this link at 6:40: /watch?v=jTnmthIUfIU

its my school band playing some of this song

  • with parts from this piece of music medeas meditation and dance of vengance and redid the 5mins of this show full tempo which is 192 and 204 for the last two mins

  • Piedmont Oklahoma won the state marching band championship in their class performing this music last weekend. Their 8th state championship in a row.

  • Why the hell would you think anyone would care about that?

  • I heard Blast is a recreation of Star Of Indiana.

  • When Star of Indiana disbanded after their 1993 DCI season- they formed the brass theater and arts show known as Blast!

  • WOOT!!!! Thanks for the info. Star has been brought back to life!!!

  • @tytzer93 Yes, Star left DCI after finals in 1993, and then became Blast.

  • @tytzer93 it is/ was star

  • Love the movie, love the song, love BLAST!

  • Amazing!!!!

  • absolutely love Blast! <3

and 0ceanic815.. LOVE you username! aha Lost is my favorite show!

  • delicious.

  • Yes, Star did Madea for their 93 show. However, they were not "beat out" by the Cadets or vise-versa. I believe they both Tied for 1st in the end.

  • No. Cadets got 1st.

Star got robbed, so they left and made Blast...

  • actually, thats not true, they left dci because people thought they payed off the judges to give them better scores because of their HUGE corporate sponsors........

  • HAHA YOU FAIL AT STAR HISTORY they left because they were ahead of their time.

  • im telling you what actually happened. "being ahead" of their time had nothing to do with it

  • mmhmm riiight

  • Actually, Bill Cook only provided seed money --- a LOT of seed money. But he also insisted the corps support itself as much as possible (Star Tours bus line, for example). A business man who starts in his garage and then works his way into being a billionaire does not simply throw his money at an expensive product like drum corps.

  • @homfencing well he did

  • Not entirely....certainly he wanted the corps to be ABLE to succeed fro the start. Most corps have to struggle to get the necessary gear...especially G bugles back before 2000 when that was ALL you could use. But he did not continue the same amount of financial support in the following years. He probably contributed, yes -- hell, when was the last time you saw a billionaire driving one of the busses? But the corps had to take on more of it's own support after the initial money was spent.

  • Actually, yes Cadets were the official champions. The scores were:

    1) 97.4 Cadets of Bergen County

    2) 97.3 Star of Indiana

The first championship tie didn't occur until 1996 between the Blue Devils and Phantom Regiment.

  • Cadets won with a 97.4. Star took second with a 97.3. Cadets took best the visual and GE captions, but Star took best percussion and brass. (They tied in brass with the Blue Devils).

  • yes they did siryocro, that was the year they won the world title I believe, if not then it was in 93 when they did Raspegy. I was on tour with the Colts during this time and I have to admit I liked Stars show 100 times better then I did our own.

  • if you mean respighi, they played that in '91.

  • didni htey play this in 1992 dci finals when they were still star of indiana?

  • sorry s wrote that wrong didnt they sorry

  • It was in 1993. They got beat out by The Cadets. People wonder if they would've kept going if they had won.

  • 1993

  • Cmon, where's the battery!!!! lol at about 3:45 to 4:23, i love in the 93 show when drumline was in it

  • i'm drummer myself, and drums is not everything^^ watch the awesome trumpets and stuff! and btw:

don't you hear the marimba the whole song?? or snares^^

  • yes, i heard everything. i was just in a drumming mood that day

  • your point ! :)

  • Err theres a song called _______ spring that is played by them. I forgot the title. Anyone who knows it can you pls kindly tell me =D

  • Appalachian Spring

  • For such a god awful play (Medea), Samuel Barber sure did a good job capturing the emotional elements of it musically

  • Medea isn't a play, it's a concert suite (fully titled "Medea's Meditation and Dance of Vengeance) based on a ballet Barber wrote for Martha Graham entitled "Cave of the Heart." Powerful stuff.

I wish more young people would take the time to learn the origins of the music they play in band. Real musicians DO NOT say "lol thats cool lol" and let that be it. Real musicians learn about composers and music history to learn WHY something is "cool."

  • Actually, Medea IS a Greek tradgedy, a play based off of the mistress that Jason took after stealing the Golden Fleece...That is most likely what Barber based his music off of and Graham her dance off of.

As for your comment about 'lol that's cool,' let them do that. I find that digging too much into music oft destroys the majesty of the actual piece, just like over analyzing a novel destroys the enjoyment of the writing.

  • The Medea story began life as a myth told over many generations and was eventually set into tragedy form by Seneca the Younger and Euripides, and later others. I have studied both the music and myth in detail. I found that learning the intricacies of the story opened up an entirely new dimension to the music that I enjoy to this day.

  • Then why did you jump down my throat when I mentioned that 'for such a god awful (my personal opinion) play, Samuel Barber ...etc'?

  • OK whoa, nobody's jumping down anybody's throat. I assumed that this comment thread was about the music being performed in the video. I was only pointing out that Medea 'began life' as a Greek myth and the play came later.

I'll close this discussion now, at least on my end.

  • no star did this in 93 and phantom hasn't ever done it you guys get an F in DCI history!!!

  • The Music is from Samuel Barber's Media

  • Media? Or Medea?

  • dat was sick

    it' was incredible...

  • That baritone lick at the end is still tits. Awesome blade and flag work.

  • This song is the most moving, powerful piece of music ever, especially the last 3 or 4 minutes of it. Goddamn. Listened to it over 50 times and I STILL get chills. When I saw them live, my mom started having a miniature panic attack.

I agree, Star's '93 performance is better, mainly because more players gives it a better balance. But this version is made with an overall idea of power. It just seems so much faster. Amazing guard work, too.

  • These guys are amazing!!!!! I love them!!!!

  • I remember when someone did this in 1991..can't remember if it was STAR or Phantom though..

    Awesome!

  • It was STAR...one of the most incredible shows ever performed...so far ahead of its time

  • In 1993. Not 91

  • I agree.

16 years after the 1993 show and still not one corps has innovated as far as Star of Indiana 1993. Not even my own corps, The Cadets.

  • Ah....but Star 93 would not have been possible without the innovations of Suncoast Sound...particularly the 1988 show.

  • Not as good as 1993 Star, too much trumpet near the end, not enough mello. It makes the sound too bright.

  • True but I mean you can't reall compare blast an indoor music show by what is essentialy a partial drumcorp to a full on field drumcorp. Both performances are very enjoyable still and yes I do agree Stars 93 should have one. My front ensemble insructor march stars from 91 - 93. I must admit its missing that awesome percussion sound at 4:11

  • This is breathtaking...

  • I hate it when people clap during long pauses. it ruins the pretty echo effect of a cut off :[

  • part of it was the rifle toss. People cheer with the guard throws things in the air and catches them :)

  • lol... how simply is the human mind pleased, no??

  • 7:19 Straight from their '93 drill. It's almost like Star's back.

  • Wow, my high school marching band is playing this song as our closer. I don't think we will ever get it that good. Ha

  • Hmmm CPHS?

  • or WCHS? cause we're doing this as our closer too

  • 4:13 is sex in my ear. IMO, one of the greatest brassline moments in 1993, and again with Blast!.

  • if this was marching band.... try Drum corps on stage with no rules....

  • High school marching should never be compared with drum corps.

  • Well the whole point in THIS song is to be out of control and IN UR FACE its a revenge song not a poetic love theme XP

  • lol seriously... i mean sure playing with the colorguard guns and swords n stuff is fun but to ACTUALY be in colorguard... :/

  • try fag patrol: windtalker 70

  • My Band has to play this song O.o

its REALLY HARD....Mostly the Triplets O.o

  • LOVED IT!!!

  • Gotta love Star of Indiana

  • What these people do is very entertaining in my eyes. You must have an appreciation for minimalist composition, however, to enjoy this.

  • Minimalist?!? This is not minimalist music. Steve Reich, John Adams, Philip Glass- thats minimalism

  • i agree- you can't have an artistic show that's just screaming in your face the whole time. my band director's words: loud is just noise without quiet.

  • The Blue Man Group is more exciting than Blast!? Umm no. I find them to be both repetitive in their shows and pathetically quiet in moments that could be really loud.

  • One hell of a finale- chills to the bone :)

  • Even though I love this performance, I have to say that Star performed it quite a bit cleaner in '93 during Finals. It was amazing.

  • Uhh.. you really can't compare them to each other. Its like comparing a broadway musical to an orchestra concert. There not getting judged, I mean it does need to be clean, but the main point is to entertain the audience. I would much rather it be alittle rougher for the sake of taking risks and making it exciting.

  • THEY R REELY GOOD....haha I ♥ the rifles!

  • most of blast is designed to entertain non-dci folk. but medea is one of the acts that was designed for the dci crowd. not everyone will grasp it

  • Gaahhhhh, peoples stop writing so many negative comments!!!!!!!! Write something nice for a change.

  • YEA!!! cant wait to march this!

  • I agree. I wold also like to see them back on the field in close competition with corps like Cavaliers, Blue Devils, Phantom Regiment, and Cadets.

  • The only problem I see with that is that Star would totally kick everyone's tail and since they'd have to spend money to come back into the circuit, they wouldn't be able to bail every other corps out of their debt *cough phantom cough*... plus they fund DCI in general

    but yes

    star

    so amazing

    comebackKKK!

  • BLAST is STILL on tour..with TALK of Star RTURNING TO DCI possibly in 2010 - either in exhibition as an alumni corp...or even BACK TO WORLD CLASS!!

Medea would be the ULTIMATE return show!

  • They are to do an exhibition so all of you how dont call this a drum corps...WHY ARE THEY PERFORMING AT DCI FINALS 2010? Case closed

  • i cant wait, im going to see this tomorrow.

  • my band director marched with Star '93, his brother marched with Star '91, and then went to age out in Velvet Knights '92. What a move. eh?

  • ok this may be a dumb question but at the begining are they holdng a fram for a chopper?

  • that would be pretty heavy

  • They look like the same props they used in their 93 drum corps program....which included Medea.

  • I <3 MEDEA and INDIANA '93. MMMMMM Star should come back to DCI with a remastered version of this show........ That'd just rape everything that exists.

  • OMG listen closely at 4:44 even the SHOE noises are going along with the music, lol

  • OMG listen closely at 4:44 even the SHOE noises are going along with the music, lol

  • Forget Maleguena, this show (and Star) is all about Medea

  • I watched this in Music Class it was cool but long

  • You basically watched Star of Indiana 1993, greatest drum corps show of all time.

  • I saw this I think it was in '01. And ever since that day I saw it I wanted to see it again but i haven't had the time because every time they were here in Michigan I had a wgi competition or something at the same time but this February 16th show I might go and see im so excited I hope I get to go

  • I saw this today, February 10 2008, it was phenominal, stupendous, amazing, awesome, and just down right cool.

  • I saw these guys last night, they were amazing! My seat was like dead center seven rows back so it was pretty cool, this piece was epic!

  • my mom had a panic attack wathcing this live =P

  • neat, they even used the same props that Star did in '93 (or was it '92? can't remember for sure)

  • it was '91
