Just wondering. Has Marla gotten the sheet music for this yet, and if so, how can I get this arrangement without listening to it and copying it down myself?
Very cool. It reminds me of the famous duet that Judy Garland and Babara Streisand did between Happy Days and Get Happy. These two songs go together because when Sondheim was writing Sooner or Later he was most likely writing a pastiche/homage to Harold Arlen.
I would stage it slightly differently. They should relate with each other. They could switch places when each takes the lead and look at each other on the long notes.
anyone who ever attempts to emulate Judy Garland should first record themselves in the privacy of their own homes, stand in stufication at their atrocity, there mere attempt to touch a GOD, and reconsider breathing as a necessity...
i would just like to point out that she is just casually belting her tits off...and outsinging the shit out of her voice teacher! this girl is so broadway!!!!! get it marla!!
My grandmother went to CCM. She was an amazing musician. She could sit down and play the piano by ear and sing--it was awesome. She would be so proud to see that it has and will continue to produce amazing graduates!
your voice is the most amazing thing i've heard in SO long. your other videos are HILARIOUS. You inspire me as a Musical Theatre major. SERIOUSLY! any time i need inspiration, I listen to YOU. THANK YOU. I can't even COUNT the times I show your videos to friends, haha. mostly when drunk, but who's counting ;)
True, but I think this song needs a different approach, more interaction.
And as for looking closely, I shouldn't have to. Stage acting is projecting yourself onto an audience, not making the audience work to interpret the story. It works in film but not on the stage.
Of course, I will say that the vocals pretty much make up for it :)
I mean no offense, it really is a spectacular performance! I'm just giving my honest opinion.
i freakin LOVE when she sings "FOR you've been through the mill" where her voice gets all edgy. ugh she's so damn INCREDIBLE!!!!! one of the best duets on facebook.
Brovo love it nice sound good singers this makes me think of somone that is at my school they sound just a like not in a bad way but in a good way SWEET I LOVED IT NICE VOICE SELCTIONS !!!!!
jeepers Creepers... Nice voice! But WHY the Extreme VIBRATO? it should be done more "rubato" and "sraight"... Listen to Sinatra sing it... "The GAL That Got Away"... No disrespect intended... Keep Swingin'!
nicely done... an interesting variation on a song so closely related with the fabulous and late Judy Garland. I listened to it as a tribute to her, and think she would have approved -- the real compliment.
This video truly never gets tiresome! I watch it about once a month (on average lol), and I watch it like the first time! Just a stunning performance!
ugh I love you! I can't wait to see you in 'Drowsy' when it comes to Providence, RI! I already have my tickets!!!! :D I only wish classes would still be going on at that time so you could come give us a master class!

Someone at CCM arranged it, and Marla is on tour at the moment, but on her website she says that when she gets back she's going to work on getting the sheet music for her songs.
does anyone wonder how many people have actually watched this? all i mean is i'm responsible for at least 20 hits. i wonder if there are only like 50 of us out there.
That's an insult to all character actors. You have to be insanely talented to even get into the chorus of a Broadway show. She's amazingly talented, she got a great role in a great show and I'm sure she's marvelous in it.
well, she's beyond insanely talented. In my opinion, she's well beyond. And girls right out of UMich who are going straight to broadway aren't half as impressive as Marla Mindelle.
I really don't mean to sound bitchy, or like an ass or anything, but, how am I insulting anyone? I didn't say anyone else was less talented, nor did I say Marla should be playing nothing but the lead. She could still play a character role, but a bigger one, because Kitty is fairly small.
And on a fangirly note, she really, really was marvelous as Kitty.
The role of Kitty is a marvelous role, wildly funny, very memorable and to say that it's "too small" for her is insulting. There are a lot of wonderful roles out there that are smaller character roles and there's nothing wrong with them. She's right out of college and already touring in a bigtime show in a role. She could count herself lucky to get an understudy at this stage in her life, but she's going on every night in a role. Good for her.
this is wonderful.....can anyone tell me are these two songs they put together or is it from something.......where is each song from ....or well you now what i mean.... i would die to get my hands on a copy of them.....
"Sooner or Later" is a song Sondheim wrote for the Dick Tracy film. It was originally sung by Madonna, but has been performed by many a musical theatre performer.
"The Man That Got Away" is from the Judy Garland film "A Star is Born."
