  • This is a very old video. There are already knitting machines on the market that do the identical process but much faster and with more technique variations.......

  • What a wonderful "out of the box" mind you have! awesome!!!! BLESSINGS!!!

  • Hi

I am a high school technology teacher and I have shown this video to my pupils. We think it's amazing and wondered if you could possibly give us some more information on how the machine was built. Plans would be amazing. To allow us to replicate the machine for a school project. Please get back to me. Thanks in advance Miranda

  • Hi - I am really sorry, I have no plans of the machine; it was simply made up as I went along using junk parts from my workshop plus a draw slider unit from B&Q and a pack of machine knitting needles. I would suggest you use RC servos to move the needles and wool feed and a stepper motor from an old printer for the carriage drive. The machine is controlled by a Picaxe 18M2 microcontroller. Your pupils will find them very easy to program to control servos, stepper motors and lots more. Good luck

  • Amazing. Does it only knit or does it purl as well? If so is it capable of patterning? Whatever the case, you've made yourself an impressive machine!

  • Cool design. I think I might attempt to make something similar. Do you have any solutions to a design that can do lace patterns? My mind is boggled!

  • Amazing!

  • Nice job...I suggest that do something with the yarn tension feeder for use other kind of yarns and other uses also, like socks, etc.

Could you tell me how much money did you spend? Did you have the photo of other products that make with this machine.

  • meravigliosa un'idea geniale per riciclare computer e stampanti meriterebbe un premio io non sono un tecnico e quindi mi accontento dell'idea meravigliosa del riciclo complimenti

  • Must be stronger than ordinary machines - I'd knit some chainmail

  • this is really interesting. I would suggest your next modification should be to improve the yarn tension as the fabric you are producing is very open meshed.

  • how do i make one like this?!!! i really want one!

  • I just got a great stocking hat pattern from knittingpatternoftheday (.) com and Grandma Nutt is adorable!

  • Hi – No, not really, I guess it could run a little faster but I would prefer it to be very reliable and not drop stitches.

  • Amazing work!

  • how wonderfully odd

  • This is really awesome, how hard do you think it would be to make a circular one? Also does this knit in both directions or does it knit one way then purl back (to make stockinette)

  • Thanks for the comment - I guess the needle bed would be more difficult to make (home made) but controlling the machine should be no problem. The machine knits in both directions and produces stockinette.

  • @slick8086 it seems that the side you see is the purl side...like on any domesticated knitting machine...the side you cannot see would be the knit side...

  • This is awesome. Almost makes me like machine knitting. Almost but sorry, nothing beats hand knitting. ;-)

  • That is beautiful!!! Both the scarves and the machine. Great job. I admire your work.

  • It's really cool... robotically! I'm surprised you didn't use a belt drive or something to move a carriage across as in most hand powered knitting frames instead of the individually knit pins. Can I ask your reasoning?

  • Thank you for your comment – My machine design was never intended to be a practical knitting machine it was simply a microcontroller project I created just for fun showing individual needle movement.

  • @correx37 I have to admit, speaking as someone who both knits, has a collection of vintage knitting machines, and frames, and loves robots...I do think this is pretty genius. Very well done.

  • I feel like I'm watching a robotics demo. This is really facinating!

  • hey i like this its great

  • FANTASTIC!! Well done you - I love it :-)

  • the MacGyver of knitting machines! LOL

  • Ha, how nice is this little knittingmachine! What a great idea to make it yourself.

It has the tempo of a KG machine of the Brother... KG93 or 95...

    :-)

  • Does it ever get jammed?

  • No problem with machine jamming but it is important that the wool feeds freely from a cone.

  • it looks so neat!!

  • wow!

  • We love your machine. Are they on the market? If yes, where can we get one. If not, would you consider building one for me? How much would that cost?

    Thanks

  • Thanks for your comment; I am sorry they are not on the market and I am afraid I could not build one for you, as most of the machine is built from just old bits and pieces I had around my workshop.

  • hı my wıfe ıs after a knıttıng machıne where can l purchase one from and what sorts of machınes are there can yous please gıve me some ınfo thanks

  • @correx37 can you tell us how to make one?

  • Hi, it would be difficult to describe how to construct the machine as most of the parts are from scrap products and impossible to buy now. I would suggest you make my Homemade Hand Knitting Gadget which is on YouTube, much easier and just as quick as the machine.

  • This is soo fantastic! I'm recently into loom knitting, cause my daughter just can't leave a cast on needle alone!! The loom holds my stitches, but I want to learn how to make a crank type knitter for myself. I will as you suggested, purchase a pack of machine knitting needles and go from there.. I'm no carpenter though -- can you tell me the tools you'd need to get this to work in a manual-ish fashion? Thanks so much your machine is my fave ever!

  • Thanks for your comment; I am not sure my design of knitting machine is practical

to convert to a crank type, why not modify a standard knitting machine?

My knitting machines were really just projects to use microcontrollers.

It may be of interest, I have just uploaded a video of my Homemade Hand Knitting Gadget, it is very easy to construct and use. Best of luck with your project.

  • I knit faster by hand ;o)

No: Good technique, really cool! Who knows how fast this could work.

  • Did you take mechanics in high school? Because THAT IS COOOL.

  • Yes, followed by a 5 year engineering apprenticeship

  • i want to ask , i purchased a Rowan magazine , is the language the same from a handknit book to a knitting machine?

  • Hi, the machine does a basic stockinette stitch, knit one row, purl one row. I hope this is of help.

  • Another geninus machine! You are geninus!!!! Don't you want to make it for sell. Can you teach me how? Thank you.

  • Sorry I have no plans, however I intend to upload a video of how to make a hand knitting gadget which uses machine needles.

  • Great work. Are you encoding the actual position of the carriage or are you just relying on counting steps?

Really phenomenal project. Would love to see some plans.

  • Thanks for your comment I just program a set number of steps as there is very little load on the carriage drive. It will run continuously for a couple of hours with no problems.

I am afraid I have no plans I just made it up as I went along, but I am sure if you purchase a pack of machine knitting needles you will be able work out with the aid of the video how it is constructed.

  • WTF this is the most amazing thing ive ever seen in maaayy lliiffeeee how did u make thaT? are you a genius??? are you a nuclear scientist??? WTFFF can you teach me how to make it? i will pay u wan MMEELion dullorrssszzz if u teeech meeeeee!!!!!!! I LOVE YOUR KNEETING MASHINE!

  • Wow, thanks for your comment, i am certainly not a nuclear scientist i am just a retired engineer. I am sure you could make one if you put your mind to it. I have used a drawer runner as the main slide.

  • yes

  • I think this is just awesome...really brilliant!

  • Thanks for your comment
