Her dad kept telling her to record this song from 1923, but she said it was old fashioned and corny and refused. Her first nine singles failed to chart, and MGM told her they'd let her release one more. She decided to fulfill dear old dad's request. Her version of "Who's Sorry Now" reached number four on the Billboard pop charts, and there was no looking back. Connie Francis became one of the biggest selling artists ever. I hope she thanked her daddy!
@rb62470 she had a tough relationship with her dad. he was a control freak and ran off her boyfriend (bobby darin) with a gun. connie was a success musically but her social life for the most part was a disaster because of her father. as a parent sometimes we have to let our children find their own way.
I think Pia Toscano, the American Idol contestant likely to win this season, would be a shoe-in for future consideration to play the role of Connie Francis in a movie about Connie's life. What do you guys think?
@cousinarty She is still selling out venues all over the world. She jsut was honored by a number of aggencies and she just completed her second autobiography.
Yeah, I wonder who the musicians were on the recording cut, especially the lead guitar. While technology certainly enhanced the range of the electric "axe", it ended a guitar pickin' style that - looking back now - would have remained popular for many years. Might still be. Same with Buddy Holly's Crickets - the stand up base really punched their sound through speakers. BH still sounded great without the Crickets, but that unique "sound" signature was lost.
Those of you who agree with me that Connie SHOULD be in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame,,help me by writing to the foundation and encourage them to induct her,,here is the address...
Connie has a great story in her book concerning her father, who kept telling her to record "Who's Sorry Now?" when she was trying to become an established singer, and kept failing. Connie told him he was stupid for suggesting she recording some decades-old song. Guess dad was right!
Connie was the best/top female singer in the 50's and 60's. All those records she sold and also sang in 13 lanuages. What talent and amazing voice. Those were the good ole days., listening to her voice. Thanks much for posting. God bless.
And these early AB performances and several performances on prime time variety shows such as Ed Sullivan's were setting the stage for the advent of the music video. (Which would eventually overtake those shows starting in the 1980's).
This clip is from an early "American Bandstand" TV show with Dick Clark. It was obviously a staged to try and fit in w/ the song. I do think it shows that Connie was more than just a good singer, she's also a fairly good actress here.

It was truly interesting to watch Connie, with her first record, transform from a rather plain girl with an indistinct fashion sense into a true beauty who became known for her great sense of style. She was/is above all a quick learner and self-improver and hard worker. We're all happy she didn't have the medical career she planned on!
Thank u for the names.. I don´t really know the genre of it and I´d like to know.. I´m lookin for this kind of sweet ballads, that break your heart xS Like this song.. Thanks anyway, I liked Timi and Brenda.. But not exactly what I was lookin´for :)
Can anybody say what´s the exact genre of music Connie sings?? I can´t find any other singers as famous as her and with her quality... Any good artists? ;)
Connie sings all different genres of music. Depends on your preference, but you can listen to Karen Carpenter, Timi Yuro and Brenda Lee to name a few.
while she sang in a few different genre, you'll often find her music listed under Pop Vocalist. Many of her early works were rock'n'roll, like "Lipstick on Your Collar" and "Stupid Cupid". She also did what might be the precursor to world music-she could sing well in a few different languages. Another artist to take a look at might be Julie London, who was singing at the same time, but she was a little older than Connie.
This video would have been better if it was her on a stage alone, big frank sinatra microphone, black dress, medium cut, close shot with her purring in that mic and looking forlorn with those big bedroom eyes.
Clowns sometimes represent being a fool...also the happy and sad in a relationship..it seems very appropriate that Connie would have a clown in this..great classic song..
I'll always like this song - which, by the way, is a remake of a much older original - but the way it's staged, with Connie singing to a female clown, is weird.
All the #1 hits, all the songs, great voice, good actress and she still can't make the Rock & Roll Hall of SHAME. They put in other people that were no better than one hit wonders.Simply a disgrace! Connie, you were, and still are the BEST FEMALE SINGER EVER.Love ya.
Amazing voice, great song - sends chills thru me ... I am not familar with Connie Francis or her music, but I saw a photo of her in a newspaper the other day and thought "Wow, what a beautiful woman" ... Now I know what I've been missing ... "I Was Born Too Late" I suppose :)

It was the custom of virtually every singer on "AMERICAN BANDSTAND" {or Clark's other series} to "lip-sync" their current hits; that way, Dick didn't have to pay for a live band to back them up. But this performance is from the first telecast of his Saturday night show on February 15, 1958; Connie was one of his first prime-time guest stars, and the kids in the audience bears that out- the show was telecast live from New York's "Little Theater", not Philadelphia. An "American Bandstand" performance. I first saw this vid. at the televised anniversary for the show back in 1981. Obviously lip-synched, but what a great job by Connie Francis on the lip-synching (unlike most of her contemporaries on that issue). Connie Francis was obviously showing that she had acting classes before she went on to become mainly a pop diva.

On this date in 1958 {Feb. 24th} "Who's Sorry Now" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; evenually it peaked at #4 and spent 22 weeks in the Top 100...
Was Ms. Francis' 1st record to make the charts; had a total of 55 records to make Billboard's Top 100 {15 Top 10 records with 3 peaking at #1}...
Reached #1 {for 6 weeks} on the U.K. Singles chart...
Was first performed in the 1945 Marx Brothers' movie "A Night In Casablanca"...
Marie Osmond's covered version peaked at #40 in 1975...
