He wanted them to quit subsidizing the race based quotas that everyone knew were going to cause this. If government just keeps their goddamn nose out of it, the people can regulate the free market just fine. No CRA, no meltdown in 2008, just a fact.
What Bush proposed was that oversight of Fannie and Freddie be transferred from congress to the treasury department. It was the pushing of subprime mortgages and the housing bubble that ameliorated Bush’s dire economic record. He expected the crash after he’d left office. Unfortunately it didn’t happen like that and he had to start the bailouts.

If an industry, be it banking, insurance or oil is no longer competitive but monopolized by a handful of companies, the consumers role in regulating a market becomes ineffective.
Monopolies are impossible without government stepping in to make sure they happen. A private company does not have the ability to keep you from building a better mousetrap, and selling it. The only thing that stops entrepreneurship, is government regulations. Price controls, incentives, and restrictive regulations smaller companies can't afford, for their big contributors. Restrict that ability of government to influence market winners, and you're safe.

I know that EMT's, Schools, Police, roads etc are paid for by my taxes. Actually, many of those are paid by PROPERTY taxes... So, see, I do know something. You seem to be assuming I don't know. These local things are paid by property tax by locality. SS, EBT, etc are federal programs, paid for through FICA, etc.
Rush's point: the more people are dependent on these programs, the less they will work for themselves. Much like feeding wild animals. They stop doing for themselves.

The vast majority of people I've met or known on food stamps dont need them to survive. People need to learn to make better decisions if theyre broke. people can grow a variety of foods indoors and out and their are always food banks and churches that can help out. The near total collapse of the economic system in 2008, the fact that the financial industry survived only on the basis of receiving massive amounts of taxpayer money, suggest that his ideas need to be reviewed.

Are you kidding? The trigger for the whole damn mess was the housing market. Flooded with Fannie and Freddie loans that the banks didn't want to make, they were mandated by federal law. Forcing them to either go bankrupt, or package them and sell them off as derivitives. Which BTW, were mireported as safe investments by Barney Frank, currently serving in this administration. The ENRON guys, went to prison for that. Frank gets a job.

@pimpdalyrical In 1997 Greenspan was already pushing to keep derivatives unregulated. In 2000 they allowed self-regulation of derivatives. So from 1998 to 2008 the number of credit default swaps outstanding increased 100 times. This is not to mention some of the more fundamental deregulation undertaken by Clinton. So I'm still wondering how regulation can have caused 2008. A chronic lack of it possibly? Or would even less regulation have made the financial industry less reckless?

Bush's intervention after decades of deregulation and laissez faire policy says it all. By 2008 even Greenspan admitted trust in the market and deregulation was misplaced. Leftist policy? Democrats spent the 90s deregulating all sectors with the same faith in the market as republicans before them. How did regulation lead to 2008?

Actually what got shouted down by rediculous claims of "bigotry" and "racism" by democrats in 2004 was Bush's call for greater regulation of the government end of the mortgage industry, Fannie and Freddie. He wanted them to quit subsidizing the race based quotas that everyone knew were going to cause this. If government just keeps their goddamn nose out of it, the people can regulate the free market just fine. No CRA, no meltdown in 2008, just a fact.

What Bush proposed was that oversight of Fannie and Freddie be transferred from congress to the treasury department. It was the pushing of subprime mortgages and the housing bubble that ameliorated Bush’s dire economic record. He expected the crash after he’d left office. Unfortunately it didn’t happen like that and he had to start the bailouts.

@pimpdalyrical You either find a balanced approach to regulating the market or the market is left to regulate itself. 2008 proved that the results of the latter are conflicts of interest, misaligned incentives and unsound practices that do enormous damage. If the government “keeps it’s nose out” entirely the only people in a position to regulate are those that work in the financial industry. And they have no obligation or accountability to “the people”.

No, you let the market do it's job, and the government steps in when a business violates the law. Like a referee, It does not get to have a stake in the game, or get to make rules as it goes to suit one player over the other.
The only group with no obligation to the people is government, which can mandate the continued funding of it's operation without satisfying the people or turning a profit. Ever been to the post office? Businesses need you to hand over your money WILLINGLY!

@pimpdalyrical If citizens perceive that the government they elect is failing them they reduce it’s power and remove it. Privately owned companies are not democratic institutions. If an industry, be it banking, insurance or oil is no longer competitive but monopolized by a handful of companies, the consumers role in regulating a market becomes ineffective.

Monopolies are impossible without government stepping in to make sure they happen. A private company does not have the ability to keep you from building a better mousetrap, and selling it. The only thing that stops entrepreneurship, is government regulations. Price controls, incentives, and restrictive regulations smaller companies can't afford, for their big contributors. Restrict that ability of government to influence market winners, and you're safe.
