Don Adams was a combat Marine and Drill Instructor during WWII. Even though he acts like a boob you can tell that he carries himself like a Marine.

Yeah, you can see that in the way he holds the gun and in the way he fights the bad guys (no stuntman in this episode). Don Adams did a good job of making Max funny without looking like an idiot. Steve Carell also did a good job of matching what Don Adams brought to the role.
