I think the definitions of muslim need to be clearer. It seems everyone agrees on that you should avoid marrying someone who disagrees with Muhammad's prophethood, but does accepting Muhammad as a prophet automatically make you muslim?
If your husband-to-be calls himself a christian but has similar theological views as his muslim wife-to-be, does it make any difference what religion he claims?
Defining what a muslim is seems to be the most difficult thing and this debate leads nowhere.
It's sad how the motion itself wasn't clear, because Islam allows women to choose who they want to marry but within Islamic boundaries as Yassir Qadhi said, if they want proper Muslim families. As @misscamara12 rightly said, and I also agree that Muslim men should marry Muslim women, because nowadays they are not as strong Muslims in influencing their families as they should be. Finally @Daveissa87, a practicing Muslim woman will never marry a non-Muslim man if she truly wants Islam in her life.
Now I personally would only marry a muslim, and although I would prefer someone from my culture I am open to someone from a different culture. Also, my family's opinion in who I marry is very important to me, but I will make my own choice. However, I will choose someone I like AND that my family is als pleased with. Luckily my parents trust me to make my own choice and are open mined in regards to his nationality on the condition that he is a practicising muslim.
Great video I enjoyed watching it. What I don't understand is why are muslim men not prohibited from marrying non-muslim women? I don't understand that at all. How can a non-muslim mother raise muslim children? ALL the people I know with muslim fathers and non-muslim mothers are NOT muslim. They all follow their mother's way. Muslim men always look for excuses to do what they want while restricting muslim women.
@misscamara12 This is just a guess but I think it might be that muslim men these days do not take a strong role in the raising of their kids. Muslim men who marry non muslim women, often are the ones who work all day to make big bank and are never actually at home to influence their kids.

I think that of the people who voted against this idea, the vast majority are men! I think that if they felt it wouldn't cause problems with their families, most Muslim women would have no problem marrying non Muslim men. I believe that the best example came from Yasir with drinking alcoholic drinks. In a lot of the Muslim countries there are such drinks for sell and many don't drink them. In the West there is even no social stigma and still a true Muslim does not drink. The choice has to come from the inside the person not from a society! If she want to follow, she will follow, if not no one has the right to make her do so!!

I am a Palestinian American. My mother is Muslim and my father is a Christian. I didn't grow up confused. I didn't grow up feeling urged to go towards one religion. Both parents received grief for their marriage but now neither family gives them such grief. They are happy and still in love 35 years after marriage. Today I am engaged to a beautiful Muslim woman though I am Christian. We love each other more than words can say. Hate if you want. This is your decision, let us make ours.

Why are people saying that Yasir guy is intelligent, he just said that it's against islam for a muslim woman to marry a non-muslim man. I'm with Sheikh Yasir on this one. This is too broad of a topic to debate. This is debating the social factors around an individual and Islam teaches how to deal with such issues not to neglect them. DrKildem means well, but the concept of faith in the Creator in Islam is one that's very nuanced and one that cannot be given justice in a YouTube comment. Sheikh Yasir Qadhi, whom this video features, has some very good lectures on it (try "Darkness to Light"), and "Fundamentals of Faith". They're fairly long--but it should give you a *very* good idea of the basics of how we as Muslims believe in our Creator.

I think the definitions of muslim need to be clearer. It seems everyone agrees on that you should avoid marrying someone who disagrees with Muhammad's prophethood, but does accepting Muhammad as a prophet automatically make you muslim?
If your husband-to-be calls himself a christian but has similar theological views as his muslim wife-to-be, does it make any difference what religion he claims?

Now I personally would only marry a muslim, and although I would prefer someone from my culture I am open to someone from a different culture. Also, my family's opinion in who I marry is very important to me, but I will make my own choice. However, I will choose someone I like AND that my family is als pleased with. Luckily my parents trust me to make my own choice and are open mined in regards to his nationality on the condition that he is a practicising muslim.

How can a non-muslim mother raise muslim children? ALL the people I know with muslim fathers and non-muslim mothers are NOT muslim. They all follow their mother's way. I think that if they felt it wouldn't cause problems with their families, most Muslim women would have no problem marrying non Muslim men. I believe that the best example came from Yasir with drinking alcoholic drinks. In a lot of the Muslim countries there are such drinks for sell and many don't drink them. In the West there is even no social stigma and still a true Muslim does not drink. The choice has to come from the inside the person not from a society! I am a Palestinian American. My mother is Muslim and my father is a Christian. I didn't grow up confused. I didn't grow up feeling urged to go towards one religion. Both parents received grief for their marriage but now neither family gives them such grief. They are happy and still in love 35 years after marriage. Today I am engaged to a beautiful Muslim woman though I am Christian. We love each other more than words can say. Hate if you want. This is your decision, let us make ours.

DrKildem means well, but the concept of faith in the Creator in Islam is one that's very nuanced and one that cannot be given justice in a YouTube comment. Sheikh Yasir Qadhi, whom this video features, has some very good lectures on it (try "Darkness to Light"), and "Fundamentals of Faith". They're fairly long--but it should give you a *very* good idea of the basics of how we as Muslims believe in our Creator.

As a Muslim woman myself, I completely agree that women should marry freely to whomever they want as long as it abides to Islamic law. Being a true Muslim means abiding by the Quran and hadiths of the Prophet (SAW) in every aspect of life including marriage. Especially in marriage when it encompasses half our deen. Something that should be taken very seriously.

Yes, Asra the women has the right to make choice within the limit. But of course in the muslim society there is a big problem because they lack islamic education, because of this force marriage occurs and also do to cultural influences which is against Islam. But if the woman want to marry a Non-Muslim that is her choice but of course if she do that her family will turn against her and by definitons she is not submitting.

Yes you can do that because you have free will but don't use religion to justify it. If there is no limit we don't need religion,evryone should whatever they want.
