  • i live in Alabama and they grow good here

  • i live in england my mom planted one 7 years back now its massiv

  • May I water palms with semi-salty water on the beach?

  • Can I plant a palm tree in Mid Sweden? I have never seen a palm tree here so I thought it would be a great idea! :D

  • @CallMeEmaxe try a needle palm or windmill

  • @bobzzz23 Okay, thanks!

  • @CallMeEmaxe they should grow. Maybe

  • @CallMeEmaxe its most likely to cold in sweden, but if you protect your palm from the frost during the winter it might grow pretty well

  • some palm trees doesn't need much water just like a cactus

  • Now it's time to get planting!

  • This isn't a "plant" as you said in the video; it's a tree. Planting a tree near a sidewalk is a very bad idea - as seen in your video. The roots will move the sidewalk, making big cracks in it. There is no easy repair because the tree doesn't belong near the sidewalk.

  • @TomZentra no, plam "trees" aren't really trees at all... they are monocots, and they are their own species that grow up on a trunk LIKE a tree but they are not one. plus you wont need to worry about its roots destroying that sidewalk.. this palm is planted in washington state. it most likely will NOT get that big in her lifetime. BTW trees are plants.. genius. lol.

  • @bananatree94 ...I don't know about Washington state, but in Texas these Mexican Fan Palms (Washingtonia Robusta) can grow thirty feet of trunk in ten years. The roots won't destroy a sidewalk but the trunk width may.

  • we planted ours this yr in the midlands, England and we are already into a frosty winter, duuh. At least now i know it is a grass tho, so prune with a lawn mower I guess.

  • They actually are a grass, not just like a grass. Careful about cutting those fronds!

  • i live in Washington State too and i just planted like 5 of the Windmill Palms . If they survive this winter then i'm going to order some 12 ft palms for the spring of April! how exciting lol

  • you see its not a tree because its more like a grass haha

  • I have a redneck palm growing inside and also a Midnight Horror palm which it gets its name since its really stange looking and they get pollinated by bats. I want to get a bottle palm which are small but really cool look.

  • the best palm trees r grown in middleast specially in Iraq, the friuts r very sweet and also they sqeeze the seeds to make oil its a devine tree, everything about it is great, and its the most beautifull tree in the world, i grew some of them in my apartment and they r 7 years old now,but very small if u want to see em i could upload a video of em.

  • today in class we were talking about palm trees and my science teacher said that the palm trees that grow like crazy in our area were actually native to india. we are in the south coastal bend. (texas)

do you know what kind it is palm it is?

  • I have two questions. First question. Do palm trees bear fruit? Second question. Is there a difference between a palm and a palmetto?

  • All palm tree's have fruit.

but very few of the fruits are actually eaten commonly (in the western world). The main things eaten from palms are coconuts and dates. Acai berries are sometimes eaten too.

A lot of palm's fruit are really small tho, and have a large seed inside them.

cycads on the other hand, which some people call palm trees, are not actually palms, and have no fruit.

  • Thanks for the info.

  • There are lots of palm trees that will suit the cold environment. Some palm trees do not need much heat at all to survive. It really all depends on the species. To learn more visit us at realpalmtreesdotcom

  • Thank you for the useful info, my father who recently passed, planted a palm tree and I wanted to ensure it lived. I had no idea how to take care of it. I thought palm trees didn't like a alot of water.

  • The palm in your vid. is indeed a Washingtonia robusta, but only fool proof in one very small region of the PNW. Brookings, Oregon and Gold Beach is the only area you will see mature specimens. Anywhere else north of that range they will freeze in a bad winter. Your best bet is Trachycarpus fortunei, completely hardy in all coastal areas of the PNW including the south west coast of Canada. There are over 2,800 different types of palms.

  • I did not know that palm trees are really a type of grass, cool, usefull information highty recommend to view from her video.

  • she said they are "like" grass.. they are not a type of grass thought.. they are their own species...

  • Palms are Monocots just like grass and lilies. They are definately not a tree.

  • @bj616 uhhhhh i NEVER said they were.. i already knew they were not trees which is why i said they are there own species...... please read comments before responding to them.

  • I think what she meant is that Palms are monocot like grass. I did read the comment, that's why I responded. Not looking for an argument.

  • @bj616 neither am i. i simply corrected someone by telling them that the lady said palms are not a type of grass and you come behind me and try to correct me for something i never said.

  • I'm not correcting anyone, just was stating that palms are monocots and not trees. I agree they are their own species and there are over 2,800 of them on the planet.

  • @bj616 ok well then that was a completely random comment but alright. what zone is saltspring island in by the way? i saw your new years day video and it is amazing how green and tropical it looks in january. especially for canada. im in Michigan which is zone 6. i grow banana trees in the summer but im too chicken to try any palms outside yet. any advise for winter protection? or do you think it will be to cold for them and i should just bring them in?

  • You could easily grow Musa basjoo because I know of many people in Ontario that grow them. Also I have a friend in Montreal that grows Musa basjoo bananas. Just have to make sure you give them protection in the winter. Our island is solid zone 8b with many zone 9a areas as well. The Pacific Ocean keeps us mild in the winter. Check out some of my uploaded vids I have taken. Many of gardens and plants we grow here.

  • @bj616 no i already do grow musa basjoo here, i wanted to know what type of PALMS i could grow here.

  • Rhapidophyllum hystrix & Sabal minor are the two most cold hardy shrubby type palms. Always best to get the best ecotype, such as Sabal minor native to Oklahoma or Arkansas, they can handle more cold. Trunking palms like Trachycarpus fortunei and takil are good ones to try, but will need protection.

  • @bj616 cool thank you, i think that the needle palm seems to be the hardiest. ill try them. and ill look up sabal minors as well. do you know is chinese fan palms are hardy? if not then ill try for the windmill palm.

  • If you are referring to Livistona chinensis ( Chinese Fan palm) don't waste your time with that one. Best stick with Trachycarpus fortunei if you want a trunking palm. However trunking palms will need winter protection in zone 6 however it's easy enough to do. I know of guys growing palms in Iowa and Wisconsin. They are always posting pics. of their palms on our Hardy Palm Discussion Forum.

  • @bj616 ok thanks, im glad i did not buy it then. what is the name of your website? i would love to see some of those pictures.

  • It's actually called the Hardy Palm & Subtropical Board. You could Google it. It is a discussion forum of palm growers from all over, mainly is cooler climates. There is archived posts there as well you can look at. I have been a regular for many years.

  • @bj616 by the way im aware that banana "trees" arent actually trees either haha its just what i call them.

  • Bananas are actually giant herbs that spread underground. You could so easily grow bananas in your zone. I know so many people that grow bananas in zone 6. Palms too.
