I like the tempo... If you rush the brass and the percussion--and they totally set up the entire work--, you'll totally lose that intro...And, I think the vivace marking is relative to the tempos of the other movements. Director can only go as fast as the musicians can sing/play well. Nice recording, too.
@afmorgan53 Exactly! My college choir is performing this soon and we can sing it faster, but for those who can't the tempo needs to slow down slightly. It is better to perform a piece a little slow and maintain the intensity as they did, than to sing quickly with mistakes throughout. Also, it is up to the director to know his ensemble well enough. If there isn't enough time to get a piece up to speed by performance time, singing slightly slower is the only option.
"Gratsias agimus tibi" gives me chills everytime I hear it. Love the bass part on it, so sick! Can't really hear it too well on this thuogh, good recording though, I like it and I don't think it's too slow at all.
Hmmm, I'm sorry, but this suite (well movements 1 & 3) are so great because of their energy, and regardless of what the temop marking is on the sheet music, the faster tempo will give it more oompfhfph (as it were) But well done other than that! :D
Their entrances are so sloppy. O.o My highschool does this better. And the vowels are rather spread. Too many sopranos. They overpower the whole choir.
And if you look at the music, the tempo reading is suppose to be this slow if not slower. Just because you did it a different way doesn't mean you're right.
Some of my classmates and I were a part of the mass choir who performed John Rutter's Requiem this past Sunday. Rutter directed it himself. It was an amazing thing to experience. Especially in high school. Rutter is amazing.
Very good job, all! As if you didn't know already, it's a bit more slow than I'm used to, but otherwise, very good. Sounds like it was performed in an excellent space (acoustically) for music.
Very lovely. Voices blend well and diction is very present. Far too slow. Needs to have more excitement. Would like to hear more dynamics, more crescendo and decrescendo where needed. Careful with your pitch, on the phrase, "Et in tera pax". Nice big finish! Overall a wonderful job!
good series. I agree that this particular movement should be at a slightly faster tempo, but I don't know if I would conduct it in one. Though I will say that the conductor is sending some very confusing signals.
The brass probably had only a couple of rehearsals with this conductor. Still, the sound is very good, from the choir and brass alike. I've done the piece and I think this is a pretty good tempo.
You can always become a conductor and do it at the tempo you like, but this one pretty much fits what I have heard.
Allegro Vivace means fast!

the opening bars of this allegro vivave were ripped off from Alfred Newman's Main Title from Airport (1970), just search it here on YouTube!

Take it in 1. - With superb performers, shame to be so far under tempo.

In the music, it's written for a quarter note = c. 156, and I clocked this recording at 150. I'd say that's close enough for my taste! :P

The voices were amazing, but it was very boring because of the excruciatingly slow tempo.

Great choir. It would have been nicer if this is done in a little faster tempo.

Way too slow... all the excitment is out. Where is the director's passion. The choir sounds fine but the director needs some boost.
