My girlfriends father was there jet pilot when they went on tour ..he flew them around in a lear jet 21. Out of White Plains NY. 1970-1972 MOUNTAIN ROCKS . RIP FELIX
Felix is gone......Leslie West is one of the most underestimated guitarist in rock history..3 man band here...They jammed!!..If anyone cant see that..they need a musical makeover!
Can't believe the silly comments on here about Mountain...they still kick ass live and Leslie and Corky are still amazing....plus Ritchie is a great bass player even though he is primarily a lead guitarist.......interestingly Noel Redding stood in on bass for a while. I was talking to Corky laing a few years ago and I had a Hendrix T-shirt on and he was telling me about Noel, but I don't think Noel and Leslie got on very well.
Of course. Leslie and Corky are playing as good as they ever have, and with far better equipment. Check out Leslie jamming with Joe Satriani this past October.
I was aching to hear Brian Walden's voice introducing another dreary '70's interview with a British politician at the end of this, other than that, it sounded pretty good to me.
It's sad to see a once-great band reduced to such mediocrity. West and Laing are talented musicians, but it is clear that Felix Pappalardi was the heart, soul, and brain of Mountain. Richie Scarlet seems to be barely able to play, and why in the world is "Paint It Black" shoehorned into NS? This video proves one thing: this Mountain has crumbled. A pathetic sham.
I agree that this is not Mountains best work. Actually this entire DVD is pathetically produced. Horrible lighting and sound that was sun VHS standards.
As for Mountain, no worries, everybody has an off day. Check my page for some significantly better Mountain work. New signature guitar, new bassist (guy is nuts and he can PLAY), new amps, and Leslie is STILL in top form. Just finished touring with Joe Satriani, and there 2 song encore was LEGENDARY, and Ive got it caught on tape!!
Pitiful performance...Mountain nothing more then a jam/garage band today. West sucks and only appears to play cheap gigs in ahstray smelling stinky bars. He was at his best in 1985 on the Voiceprint Mountain live in Paris DVD...which I can't seem to get a copy of.
This is nasty! Maybe the original version was so studio enhanced that it can't reproduced on stage. Especially without the keyboards. Why is West playing the riffs from the Stones' PAINT IT BLACK in this song? It's useless. Felix was the real genius behind the band with West its great guitarist. In the 2003 re-release CD of Nantucket. In it, West tells the story that back in the days of whaling ships, when a whale was harpooned, it would take the ship on a 'NANTUCKET SLEIGHRIDE' until it died.
No,you're right about the keyboards - the gear that was used and the production was pretty straightforward although very imaginative at that time - like a lot of stuff back then. I'm in a band where we do mostly sixties and seventies stuff. It's just that without the keys on this one, it just doesn't sound right !!!
OK, anybody understand the "Lay your reeds and drums on my soft sheets" line? 35 years after I first heard it, it still makes no sense and doesn't seem to fit the rest of the song...
I miss the keyboards in all the 'modern versions' of Nantucket sleighride...
Wondered for years where Owen Coffin was! until I read "In The Heart of the Sea" by Nathaniel Philbrick. (Now that really is an amazing tale, highly recommended). Great band.
Leslie West STILL to this day possesses the Best of the VERY BEST guitar tone and vibrato in Rock. Leslie West & Corky Laing are the ONLY TWO ROCK DINOSAURS LEFT in Rock. Long live the Dinosaurs! Come to THEGREATFATSBIES DOT COM and join the MOUNTAIN FAN CLUB! Its free and u KNOW U WANNA!!
Great stuff. I saw Mountian live and up close in 1975, and I've been aware of Richie Scarlet's playing since the days of the Gemini and the Rock Palace. Richie deserves a Dean endorsment too. Felix is missed to be sure, but dead is dead; long live the living...Play Loud, Live and often.
Voiceprint, this wasn't used as the theme from world in action, that was "Jam for World in Action" by Jonathan Weston, I've been looking everywhere for it. Nantucket Sleighride was the theme to "Weekend World". Thanks for posting tho, great tune
Anybody saying Richie Scarlet cant play bass is just tone deaf or lying like a rug.... Nobody will EVER replace Felix Pappalardi on bass, but Richie is a GREAT GREAT player live. So its really quite simple, if you say he cant play, you NEVER LISTENED TO HIM PLAY. Move on, nothing else to see here!! :)
Anyone who says Leslie West isnt one of the TOP 10 most influential rock guitarists in rock history is just not being honest. Maybe the fact that LESLIE WEST, unlike all these MTV groups that play what the MTV execs want to hear, never got to play the biggest arenas, but thats ok, the MUSIC WAS NEVER FORGOTTEN. Thank you LESLIE WEST FOR STAYING TRUE TO YOUR FANS! Come to the greatfatsbies dot com, my new MOUNTAIN fan site, and send me your opinions and content... for all to share...
I've seen this version of the band many times at a nearby club (Bull Run in Shirley, MA). Richie Scarlet is no "poseur." He is a friggin' hard worker; a fan of the trio for which he works; 100% dedicated to Mountain and its fans; an extremely nice, approachable person. He tours endlessly (probably with meager pay) in the shadow of the past greatful to deliver this music to the public. See a show; watch his impassioned solos and performance; talk to him. He is the geunine article.
So Neil Young is pitiful when he plays his Crazy Horse songs is he? I would sooner listen to Leslie West, Neil Young or any so called old guy than the Instantly forgettable crap on MTV!
I AM VELMOUS. I don't like the nasty stuff you folks are calling me. I can play Leslie West riffs that will have you creaming in your panties. Grace Slick also said it is pitiful when old people play rock n' roll. West career was short lived because he never gave his 100%. He recovered...but even his current shows are not 100%.
In comparison to most insipid young bands these days these wrinklies still sound great. Jack White would have a hard time trying to follow Leslie even today. West looks better, fitter, today than he did when he was 25.
I'm a Leslie West fan from wayback, but after seeing these guys last summer, I am blown away by Corky Laing's drumming, reason enough in my opinion to see these guys. Just watch out for the flying drumsticks.
velmous fuck off you shitface. he is one of the greatest rockers of all time. extremely underrated. awesome guitarist. hugely influential. you fucking cock. cant believe you said that. what a tit
Totally agree with the comment re-Velmous. I was born in the seventies and grew up hearing this band and many others from those times...Leslie West an co were among the best around then. It's a pleasure to see blokes like that performing still, but only if they can perform still...fuck what they look like....West still has the music in him !! People deserve to see talent like that !
Turn on MTV and see some of the most pathetic no talent YOUNG duche bags playing total shit ,these OLD rockers could blow them away -I agree with thesillywabbit1349 VELMOUS your a CUNT!
The original Mountain was one of the first concerts I ever went to: in the Filmore East, NYC, maybe 1969? Leslie was huge (size), and the guitar looked like a toothpick in front of his bulk. Man he could play then and now. He has been under-rated. I saw Richie Scarlet play earlier this year with his own band in a tiny venue (200 people). Richie isn't my cup of tea as a guitarist / singer. He's okay as bassist here, but the original Mountain line up was awesome.
WOW! I didn't know this footage existed. That's me there in the purple mohawk up front. LOL 2:07-2:27, 3:27-3:47, 4:49-5:15. Bassist Richie Scarlet is an old buddy and we hung out for a couple of hours before the show.
i cant pretend i know much about mountain except for the legendary leslie west. i have "the best of mountain" (1973) and its a great collection of songs.
Good but not great. I guess you have to see it live to enjoy it. Met these guys in Glasgow. Leslie and Corky were gents but Ritchie had the hump about something and wouldn't speak to anyone. Buy their book, It is great. Honest and straightforward.
Mountain is my favorite band, but only when they had Felix Pappalardi, Leslie West kicks ass nonetheless, but man, this song if so frucked up without Felix singing it, and his bass was better, screw this queer...
Great stuff. Good to see the big guy still doing it. Doesn't look like he's given up burgers though. Anyway, to the original posters comments: Nantucket Sleighride was the theme to UK series 'Weekend World', (Sunday mornings, introducted by Brian Waldren). I used to watch it just for the Mountain over the closing credits. 'World in Action' was different but similar - organ (Hammond?) sound. This NT version lacks the original Steve Knight keys, which made it special, but still great to see.
I love mountain and was lucky enough to see them live i wasnt surprised at how good they were extremly talented why they are not regarded as one of if not the best rock band ever i dont know
Yeah, and they're only making 100 of them! I saw him in NYC a few years ago and he was playing an Epiphone bolt-on LP Jr, you can get them for 100 bucks--and in his hands it was utterly monstrous, unbelievable tone!
Positive, I could have touched it I was so close. Leslie actually endorsed the Epi LP Jr sometime in the late 90's, I rememeber reading a notice in the one of the guitar magazines that Epi was going to do a Leslie West model Jr but I don't think anything came of it. I promptly ran to Sam Ash and got one for $99 (the Leslie-ish one, sunburst with a dog ear P-90). It's an amazing bang for the buck guitar, but gee, for some reason when I play it it doesn't sound like Leslie!
The Epi Jr's aren't bad at all, especially considering the price. I actually thought the Epi Jr he used on his "Sea of Fire" DVD (for one song) sounded better then the Ed Roman guitar he tends to favor. Oh, and I believe Leslie swapped out the P-90 on the Epi for some kind of humbucker.
It was def a P-90 (or P-90 lookalike) that time I saw him in NYC. I'm sure he's swapped in the meantime. Of course it could have been a cardboard box and it would've sounded Godlike with Leslie playing. The Epi Jr's a nice bang-for-the-buck axe.
I've got one of them, with the P90. I like it alot. Really nice neck, too. I have a video on this site playing one. You could check it out if you want to by doing a search for "gbrycki".
