You say we 'the created' are to blame...but it seems to me that we are actually the creators of the various and assorted versions of God and all of the arbitrary rules we attribute to him. Religion is about control. People want to be controlled to make their lives easier. they do not want to make decisions on their own, so religion was invented to take away the guesswork of living. It was based on our fear of the unknown and of death.
Fear is a great starting point for those who want to control others. That is apparent all over history. As science reveals/explains more of the unknown, religion becomes less powerful. Still, there will always be people who do not want to live independently, but would rather have someone else tell them how to live.
