When I was living in Amsterdam for 2 years I had 4 bikes stolen from me. Bloody criminals! Good thing is, you can pick them up for like 40€ used, so it's not a big deal.
as our tourguide said in Amsterdam, it's a local habit that party-ing dutch people throw bikes into the water. "Everything has value deserves to go to the canals." Also angry ex-boy and girlfriends or clumsy parking can play part in it. If u are parking in the central make sure you lock your bike ON something, otherwise it has a chance that it ends up like the ones in the video.
@TYNSDALE Not really, there are so many used bikes in the netherlands, that supply is way bigger than demand. A perfectly good bike will cost you around $50 on the used market in the netherlands, which is less than it would cost to bring one of these bikes into good condition. My guess is that these bikes will be handled as scrap metal.
Know one or two bikes around here that could do with throwing in a canal. Not talking of cycles either...lol.

do people in Amsterdam throw bikes away to river naturally ?

@firedradra Acts of vandalism... not secure parking of your bike: a few factors that will help the bike-population in the canals ;)

i would be interested in how many bikes the local authorities fish out in a year. I didn't find statistics about it.

Too funny that there are so many bikes.... just drop the hook and go. I heard there are 1 million bikes and 2 million bike thefts a year.

Why dont they just recycle these bikes for spare parts? Must be a shop or person willing to take them?

@TYNSDALE Most parts are far from optimal condition when they have been in the thilthy water for so long... This is just scrap metal...
