@ Not only that, but amsterdam fire departments have a (literally translated) so called 'fat engine' where in the rest of the Netherlands there are 6 people on board an engine, amsterdam has 7: so it could be that it's due to the amount of personnel they need for the rest: besides that its standard practice here that a ladder goes out together with a 'normal' engine.

the ladders only respond to alarms where a ladder may be useful. If not, like a traffic accident or a garbage can on fire or something the normal firetruck responds. If it's not clear how big the fire is or what is going on at all, the ladder also responds same with the normal truck.

Most ladders and aerials in holland ave 2 or 3 guys on board, because that is the amount of people needed to operate the ladder. One guy on the platform at the ground, and one or 2 guys in the "basket" on the ladder. We dont have "engine" or "ladder" teams with each his own specialities, in Holland all Engine personel are all round trained, they can perform almost any job, so thats why the ladder only needs personel to operate it. Thats why there's only a crew of 2 men.

You've got it right man. The engine's here are multi tasking and not only just for putting the blue stuff on the red stuff like in the states. They do rescues as well.

dirk , willem , or other names are the names of the firestations in amsterdam every firetruck or ladder is named like its station.

The firestation name's in Amsterdam are made up by the first letter of the street its located at.

Like the name of this fire station which started its life in 1873 when it was located at the Weesperplein. Since the started with a W the station got the name Willem. In the pas years the station got relocated a couple times but held its name.

Since the "name's" are older than the use of numbers in the department they still use "Ladder Willem" or "Autospuit Willem" in the daily traffic.

dem hier zijn ze redelijk snel opweg naar de melding maar als je hier in alemre komt duurt het soms wel 3 min voor dat de brandweer weg is(allemansschappen zijn dan op kazerne aanwezig)

Vroegah was het heel soms nog wel eens 6 minuten maar dat had dan ook wel een reden en was alleen bij automaten.

Nu zijn 5 minuten toch echt echt het maximum en het gemiddelde is 2.

Dat ligt er meestal aan wat voor nieuw voertuig er komt. Amsterdam kiest altijd voor luchthoorns, andere korpsen hebben bijvoorbeeld weer elektronische sirenes.

Hi, most of the aerial ladders in holland are 27 or 30 meters long.

The normal pumper-trucks have 1200, 1500 or 2000 liters of water.

Nou nee hoor, is niet persé nodig hoor, een lichtkrant bij ons. Wij hebben ook geen beroeps, dus dan is het ook niet echt nodig. Wij hebben ons eigen jeugdhonk, een of ander lege ophoging. Groot is onze kazerne niet echt. 2 TASsen, haakarm & een busje...

ow, vandaar, wij hebben ons eigen Jeugdhok en 3 busjes, een waterongevallenwagen, een hulpverleningswagen, een tas, een hoogwerker, 2 aanhangwagens, een groot waterkanon, en onze oefenwagen van de jeugdbrandweer.

Wij hebben dus ook een beroepsploeg van 18man en 2 lichtkranten.

Wij hebben nu een lichtkrant :D! Gisteren gekregen, en post Zuid (ik noem ut maar ff zo) ook. Ik vind um wel vet, en hij is al getest. Maar 't is meer voor de handigheid om ff snel te kijken wat er nou aan de hand was als ze op de kazerne komen. En er gaat een tijd meelopen, ook überhandig x)!

We work a lot different than the ones in USA, NZ, AU etc. and you can be sure that the equipment of Amsterdam Fire Brigade is just excellent.

the american trucks look nicer, which is a matter of taste ;), but ours are built to our needs. and as hankgs says, we're quite far ahead when it comes to equipment. one example is, and i'm not dissing the american equip. but our helmets. a lot more effective, everything is on there, from heat shield, to protective glasses, to the oxygen mask that can be attached to the helmet, for maximum coverage of the face.

our dutch trucks are just fine! the american ones are a lot bigger, but everything there is. so the trucks can be too. just like the firehouse representative that posted this said, our streets are a lot smaller, we cant have a 100 foot truck, we cant get around the corners and all.

As a professional firefighter here in California, I can say that from what I have seen in europe, they are WAY ahead of us in station facilities, equipment, training and entrance requirements for their new hires. I was really impressed with Haarlem Fire Department near A'dam and Munchen (Munich) in Germany.

A better ladder? In Amsterdam and other big city's in Europe they have in the Centre very small streets where it for our vehicles already difficult is for driving. That's the reason why the ladder not so big is as in the USA.

the apparatus they are using is some of the latest around, you'll find this time not just in amsterdam but in london, paris and berlin, here in europe we don't have the same big heavy truck like you have in usa,
