this is a modern composition... but it reaches all the way back to our ancient kings.. and through the ages of our struggles.. the enemy is no longer our neighbour... but survival, after greed nearly finished us , where bombs, and swords, & army's failed. We Can, I firmly believe, endure, and win again.
My brother just brought me back from Ireland a 3cd set of O'Riada's music which I've been playing in my car. Wonderful, wonderful stuff, funny how as we get older we much more appreciate the music of Ireland.............................:)
My recently deceased father saw this as a kind of revival of Ireland's fortunes when Seán Ó Riada brought it out all those years ago, he was right and to see one out live the other by so long is to my minds appeasement, both very sad and also a wonderful endowment of the luck that goes for some and is lost to others, I heard Seáns son last week after the all night festivity's to mark his fathers birthday? and the pride he has in being his fathers son is tremendous altogether. Long may we listen!
Back in the late 60s/1970 we were bussed from school to the SFX Hall to see O'Riada & RTE symphony orchestra perform this piece. Great memories.
