@CKS5000 I guess I have a lot more videos to make then. My son is taking ASL so he can coach me on the proper signs. Since I just go my electronic kit back maybe that can happen, now I just need to find room to set it up.
To all the nasty commenters..if you are so good you wont be watching. Why waste your time wih all the stupid comments. If you are so good you will be making videos and let others learn from you and not be watching his videos....zzzz. to the lame dogs.
Hm. I just don't get this video. In the first half what you play slowly sounds nothing like what you play quickly... It's like a totally different beat. I can't get it.
@ScoopDeville04: I am astonished at how rude some of these punks are with their ignorant comments, especially since you are providing your time, skills and musical knowledge FOR FREE! I am a guitar player and I was able to use your videos to successfully learn to play studio worthy drum tracks within a couple months of purchasing my Roland TD-9SX. Thanks for sharing your gift with the rest of us. Practice (and "know how") makes perfect!
I'm just recording with a camera and then importing it into the computer. The computer is upstairs, the drums are downstairs. I also never realized how important people were going to find the sound of the drums (and the assumptions they were going to make based on the sound of a youtube video). I did record the funk lesson directly into the camera and it did sound much better (but I had to do voice over - which some people didn't like).
tod, i would really enjoy it if you put up a video of you putting everything you know on drums together....you drumming at your best. that would be awesome.
Hmm... I've been considering buying a Roland TD-9SX this summer so I can seriously get started learning (and following along with your videos ;]). I'm a percussionist majoring in Music Ed., and I feel the sooner I acquire an actual set of my own the better. Unfortunately, this would be the first set I've ever bought and owned. Period. I've BEEN practicing on that Ion drum kit for Rock Band at home, but it just doesn't quite cut it...
My wife agrees with you but when teaching I particularly like that it counts it out if not exactly like a "real" person at least a reasonable approximation.
Slow down? I don't know how fast you are playing but going too fast can be one problem. Also at first just concentrate on the down beat . Play the beat over and over trying to hit one with the metronome.
this has really helped me with my bass beats but i still can't put it with a metronome, i can only do it with me saying 1 & 2 & ... have you got any tips
do u think i should get a acoustic kit or electronic ( i already have a acoustic but its really old) and im planning on getting a new kit which should i get?
if you dont pan on playing with anyone, get the electronic, they are really cool and you can use headphones and be somewhat quiet if thats a problem. Plus you wont have to replace drumheads or tune. If you have a nice old drum set just keep playin it unless its bad.
yeah, if you've got space, and no neighbours, go for real, if you have to worry about noise, electronic. If you get electronic make sure to try before you buy, there are some really sucky ones out there, and there not much cheaper than decent ones. check if it measures velocity, and what the highest tempo it can register his at, etc.
Do u have any practise tips on separating hands and stuff like that, cause i am a lefty,so i play HH(hi hat)with left hand, SD with right, but BD with right foot,as if i was right-handed...
And 1 more-is it normal that sometimes when i play,my right knee feels like it popped outta socket from kicking the bass drum?
I'm not a Dr. but I don't think your knee should feel like that. Muscle soreness is one thing, but joint pain might be worth seeing a Dr. about. If you are playing with your heel up you might try to lower it. This will probably make you hit with less force and be quieter so bring your hand volume down to match.
Being able to pick things up by ear is an excellent skill to have (especially for playing covers) but learning to read is another very useful skill to learn and it will set you apart from the competition. I've gotten gigs because I was the only one to come into the room that could read a chart. Plus if you read you can then learn from books and magazine articles (maybe not as important as it was before youtube!)
I agree with this, where I am currently trying to teach myself how to read notes. I am also a Play-by-Ear learner...like he said good skill, but what if you missed something in the music that you couldn't pick up by ear? That would be embarassing in my point of view. I have been playing for about 14 years off and on, and only now am i starting to read music.
alright, i can play 16ths on the bass anywhere i want, except for after the snare. i can play them on the e's and a's of any beat besides the e of 2 and 4. Any tips/suggestions? i suppose if it keep working at it, ill eventually get it down, but maybe you have some useful advice
dude. it just takes time and practice. theres really no technique to it. try playing simple beats with the 16th after the snare each measure. then u can come back here and try to play the second, more complex beat he shows u. this is a really good lesson actually
Sorry dude but I've never had a double bass setup, my left foot is strictly hi-hat. The material Uncle Todd is presenting in this lesson doesn't require double bass. I find that it is very easy to get 2 sixteenth notes in a row (2nd example) quite fast with just your right foot and a single bass setup. I use the ball of my foot near the back of the pedal to achieve almost a double bounce, any more than 2 in a row you would probably need a double bass setup, unless the tempo was extremely slow.
funny you should ask, I just started teaching myself (with a lot of help from youtube - thanks to Juston Sandercoe) guitar a little over a year ago. About 10,000 hours more of practice and I can say yes to your question!
Unfortunately, that one is built in to the TD-10 brain that came as part of the Roland V-Drum kit. Probably be the most expensive metronome anyone ever bought. You might check the Roland web site and see if the sell stand-alone metronomes.
The bane of electronic kits. I'm waiting for them to make a wireless version. I used to have all the wires dressed nice and neat but it makes folding up the kit and moving it in one piece too difficult. Plus when I make these vids I move some of the pads and pedals around so that things are easier to see and the cable ties got in the way so...
That's pretty observant to notice the Camco pedal. The voice setting on the metronome can be annoying but I use it because I think it can be helpful to people learning to hear the actual beats called out. Pity my poor wife who hears it a lot more than you do!
I assume you are interested in doing fills rather than beats that use the toms. The next video or two will be on linear beats and then I will probably do a couple on doing fills with the toms.
I'm not sure I understand your question but I realize after watching the first part again that there is a mistake in my demo. When I first play the beat I left out the and of 4 it should be there. When I demo with the metronome the beat is correct.
Hey i,ve just started to learn drums and your lessons are great i find it easier to read the tab as i go along so it would be great if you had a visual thing as you played as well.
ooo well i have another question i have a alesis dm5 and i dont like it i can eather get the roland 10 inch,hi-hat(the good one that really moves ya no) or the roland td-6 moduler but idk what to get first any response will be great thax!

Really useful, thanks. I noticed I'm only doing bass 16ths on the u. It seems much harder to put a bass 16th on the a like in your 2nd beat - so I have to work on that. Like your comment below, it seems easier with quarters on the hihat... but to really get it tight I try with 16s on the hihat
Learning limb independence is a big part of drumming. Your body kind of learns it for you. Simplify the beat. Drop notes from the bass drum and add them back one at a time. If you find quarter notes on the right hand easier do that. You can also try playing it very very slow.
fooorrrrr suurrreeee. im completely self taught so it took a while to get limb independence. im glad these videos are out here- my friend is learning and waht a joy it is to see all of these concepts explained so simply. well done man, keep up the good work
learning some zeppelin songs like "when the levee breaks" which the beat is very good for high hat, bass food separation. That how i learned to separate that anyways.
(Long story short, I'm using these videos to get the basics back)
I played percussion in my school band for a little over a year and while I was there I picked up the drum set. I quit the band and haven't touched a set since, but recently, my friend offered me his set, mutes, cymbals, and throne for $200.
actually if you use sign language for the numbers you could count to 100 on two hands.

nickstone6891 3 years ago
OMG that's the worst computer voice I've ever heard, was somebody at Roland high? Very funny though.
It's always more difficult to play slow than fast, any experienced musician knows this.
Sorry dude just wanted to reinforce this concept, I thinks it's a good one. Like I think you said it will help you to play much cleaner.
When I saw the title of this video I thought you were going to use a double bass pedal and play many 16th notes in a row, still cool as always though!

THANK YOU SIR.
(Long story short, I'm using these videos to get the basics back)
I played percussion in my school band for a little over a year and while I was there I picked up the drum set. I quit the band and haven't touched a set since, but recently, my friend offered me his set, mutes, cymbals, and throne for $200.
