Rod Marsh the WK said that Thomson used to bowl at a speed of 180K's. Due to the lack of technology at those times...his bowling speed couldn't be measured every time he bowls.
@SLICKR392 No he didn't, and at those kinds of speeds, it's difficult for humans to figure out speed exactly. Thomson definitely did NOT bowl at 180 or 170. He would have peaked at around 160 - 162, not more than that. In this video, he's probably in the 140's to 150's. No bowlers bowl at those kinds of speeds consistently either, he would have been in the 140's most of the time. Stop posting shit.
credit to the batsmen for just being there. I faced a couple of quick bowlers playing village cricket in my youth and I was right scared. But this is a different order altogether. And no headgear.... Think it was poor old David "Bumble" Lloyd who copped one in the meat and 2 veg from Thommo. My eyes water just thinking about it
@TheMkBroadcast mate u are unaware of the real stats...firstly..the fastest delivery officially recorded was clocked at 161.38 km/h (100.3 mph) and was bowled by Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan during a match against England in the 2003 World Cup and secondly jeff thompson was timed at 160.58 km/h using conventional radar...so techinically shoaib is better but that 169.7 thing is totally wrong..
@themkbroadcast My understanding of those stats is Akhtar was timed as the ball left his hand; Thomson as it arrived at the batting crease. Cannot be proven but if these were the methods used, undoubtedly Thommo was faster.
"When they timed me around the 161Ks, that was done at the batting end. These guys today are timed at the bowlers' end. Who's standing two metres in front of a bowler facing the ball? Nobody. They're trying to make them look as quick as us. We were timed further down the pitch, where it slows down. If they had timed me out of the hand, it would have been close to 180Ks." (Jeff Thomson.)
@piripi40 YOU ARE SPOT ON MATE. BUT PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY CRICKET AUSTRALIA WONT TEACH YOUR ACTION TO ANY FAST BOWLER AS IT IS BY FAR THE BEST ACTION TO ADOPT FOR PURE OUTRIGHT PACE AND THE MOST EFFICIENT TO GENERATE WARP SPEED.I THINK THIS WAS PROVEN MANY YEARS AGO AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NSW.
@11missblonde My theory is that coaches are worried about bowlers getting back and shoulder injuries. Thommo's action was obviously a very demanding one. Maybe the emphasis these days is more on prolonging careers?
I have a Cricket coaching App that measures reaction times to work out a bowlers speed. I am getting reaction times of less than .4 of a second which is working out at between 100mph and 105mph.
You know I have seen a lot of footage of this man. I have watched a lot of cricket in general, a mammoth amount both live and on TV. I can say with utter certainty that this guy was the fastest thing I have ever seen in cricket. Absolute lightning. Shoaib didn't come near him in his prime, I am sorry. I watched Jeff Thomson bowl a ball that missed the batsmans head by an inch, beat the wicket keeper and hit the sightscreen on the full. For what it's worth I think Shoaib was a better bowler.
What made Thompson so lethal was his unique slinging action. The batsman lost sight of the ball just before delivery. His action also enabled him to get the ball to rise sharply from a good length delivery. At his best he was almost unplayable on the front foot. I take my hat off to the tail end batsmen who faced him without any modern day protective gear. I would love to see how current players would perform without helmets, arm guards & chest protectors. i dare say many would be exposed !
Most of these balls will be given an uppercut my modern batsmen today. 170kmph or faster? Watch Akhtar's deliveries with a cam from back. Will look the same. The pace and the carry appears much more exaggerated when seen from the wk end cam.
I'd love to know just how fast he reached. Clive Lloyd - who, let's face it, hardly presided over slouches - said he's the fastest he's ever seen. Rodney Marsh put him at well above 100mph.
I'm a Pommie & I just think he's a legend of the game - him & Lillee.
To me the difference was that Thommo ambled in from miles out & then put all his strength into that slingshot action of his. Lillee, on the other hand, charged in, huffing & puffing as though his life depended on every delivery.
@melglen1-thommo was a freak and maybe a mile or two faster than akhtar or maybe same. But overall speed of bowlers have gone up in the last couple of decades. I reckon by 3-4 kms. Ambrose walsh bishop patterson were better than.wi quartretBut batsman improved grew taller had better bats, protective gear, pitches in my view did not got faster. Infact if u watch youtube videos of 70 and 80 i reckon 90 were fastest but they have become a lot more true and even, making modern bowlers easier.
not just akhtar, guyp like sami, zahid, hayward, lee, patterson, tait, taylor are tearways. Its the improved reaction time besides better protective gear has made them seem less extraordinary. Btw thommo has been measured using both high camerar and radars. Former user speed at point of dekivery. Once in g comp he measured high of 150.holding 143.rest lillee imran etc under !40.
so thommo is the fastest ever? And benaud reckons tyson was even faster than him. Wonder why these damn fast bowlers are becoming slower by the day? Maybe it got something to do with the fact humans have got taller and sturdier? Thommo says he bowled at 180? I am sure if speed guns were not around akhatar would have claimed 200. Sami 180. Lol
@tony5486zo54l tyson was barely 145 km Richie is goin senile watch youtube clips of him .wes hall would have been quicker than tyson trueman and anyone at the time.
Guys I just calculated his time for 0:28...and that came out to be o.35 on average.....You know what that means...This means he is bowling at 128mph....This is freaking crazy mate
@boswellwhanau ..Yeah I know that ....But at Jeff's time, the bowlers were timed at the speed with which ball reached the batsmen which is in contrast to modern day where it is timed of the hand and not when it reached the bat ...The difference between both is that all the speed that had been recorded at time of Jeff were recorded at 10 to 25% slower than they actually were ..It makes Jeff easily the fastest although not recognized by ICC to be now....By the way this is coming from a Pakistani
@Khaksaar123 Perhaps not, there is an interesting report from espn cricket that has various recordings from the 1970's through until 1998 and none of them had Lilly bowling in excess of 100mph. Ill pm the link to you as youtube isnt letting me post it in to the comments!
Makes for some very interesting reading but no mention of anyone bowling over the magical 100mph barrier, let alone bowling nearly 130mph!
@boswellwhanau .....dude plz check this video on youtube ...thommo himself stating that he was timed at 99 when ball reached the stumps......."""""Jeff Thomson and Imran Khan on recording bowlers' speed""""
there is a dvd called the kings of speed, and it has the high speed camera footage of the test conducted in 1975 at the waca.two photosonics high speed film cameras were set up on the boundary at each end of the pitch, recording release speed and the speed on to the bat, jeff thomson let one go at 160.45 but came on to the bat at 128kmh cos it was short pitched, his next fastest was 159.49kmh and onto the bat at 138kmh.
@Khaksaar123 There's 2 bits of info out there which are true but often misunderstood , First that in the 75 readings bowlers were timed at the batsmen's end...true but they were timed at BOTH ends & thommo's speed of 99.7 mph (160.45 kmh) was his release speed. Second that the speed would have been higher if the same delivery was read with today's radar method.rather than high speed film. Again true but only slightly, 4 or 5 kmh max but not 10 to 20 mph.. Seems even Thommo has misinterpreted..
@Khaksaar123 In Thommo's era they could be timed either out of the hand or at the batman's end. Either way, the fastest ball Thomson was ever timed at out of the hand was 99.6mph, which remained the fastest recorded speed until Aktar beat it - at altitude, (....and chucking).
Between 75 and 79 Thomson was often timed at around 99. Thommo was easily the fastest.
Lillee's 'The Art of Fast Bowling' lists times out of the hand and also at the batting end from the Perth 75 test.
@neuterallrednecks ....Thommo is fastest ever no doubt ....I won't say Shoaib chucks.. HE has hyper extention...please check it ....If you do, you can see that his arm bends beyond the limit that a normal straight arm.....Shoaib may not be fastest, but he did not chuck...It does not seem nice coming from a man of your logic.....
you guys are dumb..they don't have helmets in those days..that's why that was real cricket..ask the great Sachin to play without helmet against him,...Don Bradman cracked bodyline bowling without helmet..
you guys are dumb..they don't have helmets in those days..that's why that wes real cricket..ask the great sachin to play without helmet against him,...Don Bradman cracked bodyline bowling without helmet..
Tendulkar was 16 when he faced up to some of the fastest and best modern generation fast bowlers from Pakistan like Imran Khan and coped. Helmet or not, that's balls. I'd like to see you try that when you were 16.
@sidostheproducer12 Imran Khan was nothing over medium-pace when Tendulkar toured Pakistan - 1989. And by that time, he did not bowl a lot. The only really quick bowler in the side was fellow debutant Waqar Younis. Wasim Akram was genuinely fast but only Waqar's pace could be comparable to the stuff you see from Thommo, Holding, Roberts and others.
Not countering your general point, but had to mention that in the interests of getting the facts right.
@Ingramdumpkiss Dennis scored two double centuries against West Indies; both without a helmet or an arm guard and at a time when West Indian pace bowling was close to its peak- What a man !!
I really hope technology will one day show us how fast these balls were. There's a lot of dangerous sports - motor racing, boxing etc., but facing Thomson at top pace in pre helmet days, that's right up there for bravery!
Sheer pace! None have been quicker than this! March is standing 30 yards behind the wicket for the final ball in this sequence and still takes a well pitched up ball off his feet!
i will be shitting all over even with 2 pads..two guards and scal cap AND with a helmet..and this guy is with just a cap..were the balls bigger in size in 70s
@boiragirules It's more that helmets were not as widely used or available, in general, a LOT of things were lacking safety "back in the day". Until people started dying or getting injured big time, people didn't feel it necessary.
@SLICKR392 I'm the retard? Especially considering ANYONE can edit Wikipedia without citations? You're an imbecile, because you're an ignorant twat when it comes to suggesting encyclopedic references. Why does it matter if I was born during his time or not? A lot of historical things can be known WITHOUT HAVING BEEN THERE. Were you personally checking the speed dumb ass? No, you weren't. Therefore your arse is just as unbelievable. Don't waste my time.
@SLICKR392 And when it comes to matters of NUMERICAL FACTS, human perception is irrelevant. Just because something appears to be coming at 180 km/h, doesn't mean it IS. It has to be properly recorded. We don't very often experience such speeds, therefore to rely on others claiming those speeds is misleading and stupid, it's also unscientific. Proper refutation, now shut your dumb arse up before, you post anything stupid like "this person says so". Fuck you.
@MrECC83 you are right mate..still I feel that...men did have a bigger balls back in those days...even contemplating facing one of these guys next day,,,, on the night before.... makes me not to come out of toilet ever!!!!!!!!!!
@boiragirules Yes, that's true, in general, most men in sports, and actually life in general were definitely more hardy and "manly" than many men today, don't get me started on these new-age sensitive sissies walking around today!
There is new extended film of Thomson at his fastest in the Brisbane test of 1974-type in Lillee Thomson 1974- watch for the final delivery to Keith Fletcher- WOW !!!!!!
I think putting Shoaib in the category of bowlers itself is a travesty ! He is the most blatant chucker I have seen in the 30 years of cricket watching. In contrast, I watched Imran for 5 consecutive days in 83 without seeing even one ball which was not genuine - he was a magnificent bowler as were Lillee, Mcgrath, Donald and of course the great West Indians. Glad I had a chance to see them all ...
@pique62 you mean that is why he was CLEARED by none other than Lillee and Holding. Lille even wrote it on his book that Akhtar is OK. Where did you watch Imran by the way.?
@AIMANALI I am not sure that Holding cleared him. He has attributed the dodgy action to "hyper-extension". Well Bishen Bedi once said in the context of Murali - "If a man is blind would you still allow him to drive a car ?" Whatever be the reason, for me watching him sticks in my cricketing gullet ! I watched Imran for 5 days at the Eden when Asif Iqbal was captain and also at Faisalabad when Pakistan beat India 3-0 in the series. He had a superb action ..
@pique62 part 1 What Bishen Bedi said is a comman debate BUT it has nothing to do with hyper extension specifically since hyper extension has NOTHING to do with Chucking except that it makes your action LOOK suspect...that is what Holding saw in his action and that is ALL. Hyper extension is when your elbow bends the OTHER way to what chucking really is . now if we should allow someone with a 'freak' 'gift' from nature that helps them bowl faster is just another topic
@pique62 part 2 - if this was someone like Thommo all of Australia would be telling us what a gift from God Thommo has. Holding and the like did raise concerns THAN HE WAS ANALYZED CAREFULLY AND CLEARED. Simple Chucking is when you bend the elbow inwards towards the ground (like we all can) so it adds another fulcrum hence speed. Hper ext - is when the elbow bends the OTHER way so when it comes BACK to a straight arm position (that is legal) it adds another fulcrum(movement) hence adds speed.
@pique62 I am not going to post on this vid again (even though I love thommo) but I will say this: till the day I hear a real speed gun maker tell us about all the differences in the speed guns from the 70s till today I will believe what i see & that is that. No way thommo was 20 km faster than Akhtar & no way was Akhtar all that faster than thommo..even though in ever sports attributes have gone up in the past 30 years..so what not cricket. Just too much confusion. Peace
It is blatantly obvious that all deliveries are throws or chucksings.Bowling means rotation of the arm there is no rotation of the arm.It is just plain throw or chucking. He just brings the hand from under and throws. It is very obvious.
@productofthis who said anything about Malinga being a bowler. Yes Malinga is a thrower and everyone knows and jeff thompson is also throwing.Jeff produces a round arm throw Malinga throws with inclination that makes him so successful.People like these should not be bowling at this level of cricket as Bob Simpson pointed out but ICC is not sgood enough to look at these issues, they are not interested in cricket only the income it generates.
@productofthis But on a closer look I found Malinga's secret.Malinga does looke likes bowling he only throws occasionally . Unlike Jeff Malinga rotates his shulder in full circle For most deliveries Malinga can be blamed for the slant of his arm which makes his deliveries unplayable.Malinga instead of rotating his arm just pull backs to full exten it like throwing a karate punch(he must have found it in srilankan martial art angampora) and slugs it.technically its a throw.
@surathisuran NO chucking means ONLY one thing .....and that is BENDING the elbow AT THE POINT OF DELIVERY ....meaning when the ball is released from the hand. The point is to have a straight elbow so an additional fulcrum is not added to assist the speed. unlike a baseball thrower who can bend the elbow and hence can generate a tremendous amount of speed from a stand still (no run up). Thommo and a very natural action (very smooth) not classical but build for speed. Akthar was just as quick
Sometimes, a good ball can have the deception of a high pace. For instance, when I was young, I use to think that Glenn MacGrath is really quick, but as we know, he just hovers arounf the mid 130s.
@MrDebashishMohanty McGrath was 140+ kph when he started, so was Shaun Pollock. When they hit their 30s, both had slowed down to the early 130s. I remember being shocked at how fast McGrath was in the 1991 (I think) Windies tour when I watched an old video of it.
@camp3rman: Yeah McGrath and Pollock both got it up there early on and into their late-20's. When Pollock first came on to the scene, many said he was as quick as Allan Donald. McGrath hit 90mph (145kph) countless times over his career (just in the "clocked" era), but it's not really that big of a deal hitting 90mph so people can easily forget he used to be deadly accurate AND pacey as opposed to just deadly accurate. Ha
The last ball of this vid, is scary... there is almost no time from his hand to the batsman. I know someone who faced him at the Basin Reserve and he said he couldn't see it properly, he flinched, went side on and the ball went up his ass... LOL
...in fact, just as a sidenote, it's 'hostility' which separates the real quick bowlers and the most hostile I ever saw was Sylvester Clarke in 1981 in a county match for Surrey vs Derbyshire on a hard wicket which then had 15 mins of rain on it.
Stellar openers, John Wright and Peter Kirsten were both 'retired hurt' and no-one looked like they wanted to be out there that day...'Sylvers' was scary.
...and Fred Trueman was no quicker than Wes Hall...or Roy Gilchrist...etc, etc
It all depends on what kind of wickets they're playing on.
Jeff Thomson was very effective between 1974-76 in Australia because the wickets were hard and fast back then. Put Thommo on a Headingly or Trent bridge back then and Marsh was standing ony 30 yards back.
In fact ask any batsman from the 1975-76 Australia-West Indies series and they'll all say Micheal Holding was a shade slower than Thomson...
Jeff Thomson is the fastest of all time......I saw him play....many times....at his peak in 74 75...he could bowl mid 150 ks all day and recorded at 160 klm an hour by the university of Western australia..
@LastKnight85 it was that and more jeff thomson was clocked at 160 plus after a severe shoulder injury, have a close look at the last delivery it was well over 160 what makes you doubt it ???batsman feared his freaky pace you only have to listen to there stories
@alienhunter36 I don't doubt he was quick, but not as quick as people say. Thommo himself thinks he could have hit close to 180kmph if he was timed at release. I think it is all folk stories. Because of the lack of speed guns during that time, he became a mystery and the media played up on his speed. Don't get me wrong, I know he hit 160 kmph but I don't buy that he was much quicker than that. If he was bowling now he would be same speed as Lee/Tait/Akhtar I think.
@LastKnight85 yea mate copy that, they were talking on a local radio station last week about thommo and said with todays tech he was 175 plus ,and when i look at it.. hmmm man! he looks quick,Rodney marsh was standing 80 feet behind the stumps and ball still was rising
He is no quicker than Fred Trueman, I am not just saying that being an englishman! Fiery Fred was probably the best fast bowler to ever play the game and I think his pace is up there up with the likes of Thommo/Tait e.t.c
Maybe they should get thommo to to bowl now, see what his pace is lol
@lozzag13 Don't underestimate how much skill it takes to bowl at 95mph+. If it wasnt hard everyone would be doing it.
Yes they got to their extended position differently, and Tyson certainly more gracefully, but from there on their action were very similar all the way through a massive arc to the follow through.
Thommos action might not be graceful but its effectiveness cannot be discounted and I wouldnt go so far as to call it horrible. Now Taits action is horrible in my book,
@lozzag13 ...Thomson's action is as close to perfect as a bowler can be. Perfectly side on, allows the widest arc possible, and doesn't give the bowler much chance to see the ball, ....and bowling arm straight!. Thommo didn't get many of the usual fast bowler's injuries such as back strain, hammies etc.
@neuterallrednecks A bowler should go towards the batsman in his follow through... Why do coaches today always keep saying that??.. Jeff is going at about 60 degrees to the left in this clip!
You know, no one seems to mention that, on their day, a lot of the top guys would be quicker than each other. I remember Marshall at the WACA, it was unplayable, but the rest of the series we never saw that peak again. Thommo, tho, had that particular action plus enormous strength and flexibility. Prior to his collision, he was consistently super fast.
@CaptainArn Im sorry but Shoaib Akhtar is the fastest bowler world has ever seen and its on record. Only an australian can have a speedgun in his eyes to prove that jeff jhomson is faster than shoaib.
That is the fastest bowling ever captured on video. That third delivery was stunningly quick. For a brief period of time -Nov 1974 to Dec 1976 (he had 2-34 when against Pakistan at Adelaide, he hurt his shoulder going for a catch off Zaheer), he was one of the very greatest of fast bowlers. He was certainly the quickest I have seen in nearly 50 years of watching the game.
You can't tell me the delivery at 0:30 isn't 100mph+ out of the hand. Look at how fast it's still rising when Marsh takes it, and how he reacts from it hitting his gloves so hard.
I know it will never happen, but batsman shouldnt be allowed to wear helmets, it would make the game so much more entertaining to watch, Batsman dont fear the fast bowlers these days because they have every protection they need. try going back to the 70s where you have to rely on your survival instinct. It would make cricket popular again!
I think what made bowlers like thommo and michael holding so mythically fast was that apart from over exaggerated myths which cant be proven due to no speed camera technology, is that there were no helmets back then, you genuinely felt for the batsman's life.
when i was growing up in Pakistan, we used to copy thomson's bowling action all the time. He was very unique. Awesome, fast bowler, such beautiful days gone by and now im 42 yrs old. I miss the days of dennis lilee, alan border, ian/greg, sunil gavaskar, chappel, javid miandad. Such men brought so much excitment and fun into our lives. We love Cricket....hey dont forget ian botham....lol
Well guys, I watched the 74/5 series and the 75/6 series....and during his spells it was not simply fast. That action, the bounce, then the hurtling yorker. It was power you could feel even through a tv screen. We used to watch his over, then run outside and play we'd be so excited by it, just going beserk imitating the speed, then run back insde for his next. He made Lillee - yes, D.K. Lillee - almost dull by comparison. Here, guys, note how casual he is. You should have seen him mean!
@AIMANALI Sorry, couldn't name a fastest, but the days when he and Lillee were out for blood, there was an extra intensity. Like when they went AT Greig. Full credit to Tony, he took it and handled it. Until the yorker!
Respond to this video... Re the sight screen, i saw balls fly over Marsh, RISING. At the Gabba, that's going very close to the fence on the full, but at Adelaide for example you have a longer boundary. I would say that on any smaller ground it's a sure thing, but I can't recall seeing it.
@AhsanRaja Many things can decieve the eye when you're trying to estimate a bowlers speed from a video clip like camera angle, zoom, sound or lack of, bowler's run up etc . The thing to do is just watch the flight of the ball from when it leaves the bowlers hand to when it hits the pitch & ignore everything else before & after that, then you get a fair indication of the pace . On that basis it should be fairly obvious that this is lightning fast.
who said he bowled at 100 mph lolzz batsman is playing without helmet and he is leaving the ball like he is playing a medium pacer he dont even look like medium fast bowler lolzzz this is a joke believe me i think waqar younis was 10 times faster than him his Bouncers Yorkers were amazing and lightning fast he use to break stumps when he bowls.
The footage here is actually from Brisbane not Perth. Amiss didn't play in the Perth test. Brisbane's not nearly as lethal as the waca at Perth. I think actually most will disagree with you about reaction time slowing. Whatever the case I wouldn't want to have been either Amiss or Close in these instances.
@everkenz004 that is for sure......reaction time - i know the various arguments - i do really , I am a sportsmen also and I really have my reasons for saying what I did. when Viv first faced thommo 1976 in Brisbane he said "not to make excuses but that wicket was frighteningly fast....". Anyway - I wonder did you see these matches live or ball to ball and what do you consider thommos fastest spell.? thx and great speaking to you.
@AIMANALI Hello again my friend. I was at Old Trafford & saw Holding v Close & also saw the Lords test in that series. the 74/75 ashes I only saw on tv but saw Thommo bowl in the return series in 75 in England. Moved to Australia end of 76 for 6 years & saw many Packer games. Impossible to say Thommo's fastest but the fastest I saw Holding bowl was in World Series Cricket in Australia.
@AIMANALI You seem particularly interested in my two favourite cricketers ( Thomson & Holding). I have been doing alot of research over time working towards a project on these two & their careers ( which is why I often read the comments on youtube vids about them ). Will pm you some info, opinion & links some time in the next couple of weeks if you like ( v. busy right now ) . Info clears up many of the misunderstandings surrounding the speed studies done in the 70's too.
@everkenz004 LOL you are right. I am going through a tough time in my business in USA and this a sort of pleasant distraction - lol. I grew up wanting to see both of them at their best but never did - I was too young, I have heard stories though . Anyway , yes please send me what you can. Ideally of course any thing on teh World series cricket. thx a mill.
@everkenz004 Good project. Used to imitate them both. Holding was the Rolls Royce, but this bloke was the Lambourghini. Pity about that injury. Nonetheless, I saw his last 5/50 at the SCG, I was there with my cousin, and it was something I'll never forget.
does not seem any quicker than Holding at Old Trafford where the wicket could have been a touch slower or a lot slower. The batsmen hopped around AND got hit just the same as Amiss in this clip - even more actually. The reason I bring up old Trafford is 'cause the bowling length was similar ...
@AIMANALI Similar pace . A few things worth taking into account though: Amiss is 31 years old here & at his peak whereas Close was 43 when facing Holding at Old Trafford & his reactions were not what they once were, Close was also left handed so looked particularly ungainly when dodging Mikey's bullets. As for the wicket the summer of '76 in England was the hottest ever & the wicket was rock hard. The Oval later that series was kept docile as a result which is why Holding bowled fuller there.
@everkenz004 i respect your opinion...however a few things ...at 43 reaction time really does not slow - other attributes go - i know many will disagree - plus Close was always a late bloomer...and capable of handling pace - even Viv said that, that is why england called him back . No wicket was ever bouncier and faster than Perth (clip above ) back than...plus a left handier always looks elegant as opposed to right , all else being equal, unless he is in real trouble, like Close was
Such a different bowling action but mechanically very pure. Just shuffle up, wind the arm back and "go wham"! I remember reading (in the 70s when he was shredding our poor sodding batsmen) that he learned to bowl like that from his dad. What I don't understand is why no bowler in the last 30 years has tried to emulate this action. Fidel Edwards was close but he didn't pull his arm behind him before the bowling action, so the arm had less far to travel and less time to wind up to 100+. WHAM!!!
@rodtorre7 Easy. The bowling speeds are measured differently these days so it has been said that Thommo could bowl at 170kph ! And every batsmen from his era say he is the most consistently fast bowler - at least they knew what they would get. From the first ball to the last ,lightning quick, pitched only a few feet in front of them but it would lift up around their ears.
Watched some interviews etc yesterday before the ashes started, the English bats said in the prime of Lillee & Thommo, they could'nt wait to be on the plane home. Lillee may have been a touch slower, but it was like he could choose which finger to hit. Then again, Glen Mcgrath averaged about 130k"s but made the best bats in the world look very awkward with line and length and took the best career figures for a pace bowler. To count Lara as one of your bunnies says it all.
These deliveries are no different than Holding bowling to Close at Old Trafford were I suspect the wicket was a touch slower at the least. in fact Close jerked his head around more violently than Amiss is here
The second delivery is frightening. There's a bit of in-swing there and Dennis Amiss really only swerves out of the way just in time. Actually he looks at his chest in amazement and wonders how he got out the way of that one. Brutal bowling, but handled by the best batsman of the world at the time - but only just.
@negooog I'm really not sure if the naked eye can accurately gauge speed differences of 5 km/hr or so. The pitch condition and camera angle have a huge role and essentially what you are gauging may not be equal to the speed out of the hand.
It's a delicate exercise and I trust experts with propert instruments to come up with results. Having said that, there is no doubt that Thommo is extremely quick and he could well be the quickest ever.
after seeing this I wonder why people have criticized lasith Malinga for his action..at least Malinga's is a bit more smoother..

Rod Marsh the WK said that Thomson used to bowl at a speed of 180K's. Due to the lack of technology at those times...his bowling speed couldn't be measured every time he bowls.
He use to bowl 160..170 k's consistently.

@TheMkBroadcast are you retarded? he is the fastest bowler ever,
70s80sWINDIES 1 month ago
@TheMkBroadcast mate u are unaware of the real stats...firstly..the fastest delivery officially recorded was clocked at 161.38 km/h (100.3 mph) and was bowled by Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan during a match against England in the 2003 World Cup and secondly jeff thompson was timed at 160.58 km/h using conventional radar...so techinically shoaib is better but that 169.7 thing is totally wrong..
metalmaniac1892 1 month ago
@themkbroadcast My understanding of those stats is Akhtar was timed as the ball left his hand; Thomson as it arrived at the batting crease. Cannot be proven but if these were the methods used, undoubtedly Thommo was faster.
OldFartFilms 2 weeks ago

11missblonde 1 month ago
@11missblonde My theory is that coaches are worried about bowlers getting back and shoulder injuries. Thommo's action was obviously a very demanding one. Maybe the emphasis these days is more on prolonging careers?

You know I have seen a lot of footage of this man. I have watched a lot of cricket in general, a mammoth amount both live and on TV. I can say with utter certainty that this guy was the fastest thing I have ever seen in cricket. Absolute lightning. Shoaib didn't come near him in his prime, I am sorry. I watched Jeff Thomson bowl a ball that missed the batsmans head by an inch, beat the wicket keeper and hit the sightscreen on the full. For what it's worth I think Shoaib was a better bowler.
eviltide 2 months ago
What made Thompson so lethal was his unique slinging action. The batsman lost sight of the ball just before delivery. His action also enabled him to get the ball to rise sharply from a good length delivery. At his best he was almost unplayable on the front foot. I take my hat off to the tail end batsmen who faced him without any modern day protective gear. I would love to see how current players would perform without helmets, arm guards & chest protectors. i dare say many would be exposed !
2004DAZZA 2 months ago

Infact if u watch youtube videos of 70 and 80 i reckon 90 were fastest but they have become a lot more true and even, making modern bowlers easier.
tony5486zo54l 3 months ago
not just akhtar, guyp like sami, zahid, hayward, lee, patterson, tait, taylor are tearways. Its the improved reaction time besides better protective gear has made them seem less extraordinary. Btw thommo has been measured using both high camerar and radars. Former user speed at point of dekivery. Once in g comp he measured high of 150.holding 143.rest lillee imran etc under !40.
tony5486zo54l 3 months ago
so thommo is the fastest ever? And benaud reckons tyson was even faster than him. Wonder why these damn fast bowlers are becoming slower by the day? Maybe it got something to do with the fact humans have got taller and sturdier? Thommo says he bowled at 180? I am sure if speed guns were not around akhatar would have claimed 200. Sami 180. Lol

Khaksaar123 5 months ago 5
@Khaksaar123 Not likely to be 128mph, given that Shoab was the first to break the 100mph barrier.
boswellwhanau 5 months ago
@boswellwhanau ..Yeah I know that ....But at Jeff's time, the bowlers were timed at the speed with which ball reached the batsmen which is in contrast to modern day where it is timed of the hand and not when it reached the bat ...The difference between both is that all the speed that had been recorded at time of Jeff were recorded at 10 to 25% slower than they actually were ..It makes Jeff easily the fastest although not recognized by ICC to be now....By the way this is coming from a Pakistani
Khaksaar123 4 months ago
@Khaksaar123 Perhaps not, there is an interesting report from espn cricket that has various recordings from the 1970's through until 1998 and none of them had Lilly bowling in excess of 100mph. Ill pm the link to you as youtube isnt letting me post it in to the comments!

there is a dvd called the kings of speed, and it has the high speed camera footage of the test conducted in 1975 at the waca.two photosonics high speed film cameras were set up on the boundary at each end of the pitch, recording release speed and the speed on to the bat, jeff thomson let one go at 160.45 but came on to the bat at 128kmh cos it was short pitched, his next fastest was 159.49kmh and onto the bat at 138kmh.
heathirving 3 months ago
@heathirving .....But its not me who's saying that, Thats Jeff thompson himself
Khaksaar123 3 months ago
@Khaksaar123 There's 2 bits of info out there which are true but often misunderstood , First that in the 75 readings bowlers were timed at the batsmen's end...true but they were timed at BOTH ends & thommo's speed of 99.7 mph (160.45 kmh) was his release speed. Second that the speed would have been higher if the same delivery was read with today's radar method.rather than high speed film. Again true but only slightly, 4 or 5 kmh max but not 10 to 20 mph.. Seems even Thommo has misinterpreted..
everkenz004 3 months ago
@Khaksaar123 In Thommo's era they could be timed either out of the hand or at the batman's end. Either way, the fastest ball Thomson was ever timed at out of the hand was 99.6mph, which remained the fastest recorded speed until Aktar beat it - at altitude, (....and chucking).
Between 75 and 79 Thomson was often timed at around 99. Thommo was easily the fastest.
Lillee's 'The Art of Fast Bowling' lists times out of the hand and also at the batting end from the Perth 75 test.
neuterallrednecks 4 months ago
@neuterallrednecks ....Thommo is fastest ever no doubt ....I won't say Shoaib chucks.. Tendulkar was 16 when he faced up to some of the fastest and best modern generation fast bowlers from Pakistan like Imran Khan and coped. Helmet or not, that's balls. I'd like to see you try that when you were 16.
sidostheproducer12 5 months ago
@sidostheproducer12 Imran Khan was nothing over medium-pace when Tendulkar toured Pakistan - 1989. And by that time, he did not bowl a lot. The only really quick bowler in the side was fellow debutant Waqar Younis. Wasim Akram was genuinely fast but only Waqar's pace could be comparable to the stuff you see from Thommo, Holding, Roberts and others.
Not countering your general point, but had to mention that in the interests of getting the facts right.

@SLICKR392 And when it comes to matters of NUMERICAL FACTS, human perception is irrelevant. Just because something appears to be coming at 180 km/h, doesn't mean it IS. Glad I had a chance to see them all ...
pique62 9 months ago
@pique62 you mean that is why he was CLEARED by none other than Lillee and Holding. Lille even wrote it on his book that Akhtar is OK. Where did you watch Imran by the way.?
AIMANALI 9 months ago
@AIMANALI I am not sure that Holding cleared him. He has attributed the dodgy action to "hyper-extension". Well Bishen Bedi once said in the context of Murali - "If a man is blind would you still allow him to drive a car ?" Whatever be the reason, for me watching him sticks in my cricketing gullet ! I watched Imran for 5 days at the Eden when Asif Iqbal was captain and also at Faisalabad when Pakistan beat India 3-0 in the series. He had a superb action ..
pique62 9 months ago
@pique62 part 1 What Bishen Bedi said is a comman debate BUT it has nothing to do with hyper extension specifically since hyper extension has NOTHING to do with Chucking except that it makes your action LOOK suspect...that is what Holding saw in his action and that is ALL. Hyper extension is when your elbow bends the OTHER way to what chucking really is . now if we should allow someone with a 'freak' 'gift' from nature that helps them bowl faster is just another topic
AIMANALI 9 months ago
@pique62 part 2 - if this was someone like Thommo all of Australia would be telling us what a gift from God Thommo has. Holding and the like did raise concerns THAN HE WAS ANALYZED CAREFULLY AND CLEARED. Simple Chucking is when you bend the elbow inwards towards the ground (like we all can) so it adds another fulcrum hence speed. Hper ext - is when the elbow bends the OTHER way so when it comes BACK to a straight arm position (that is legal) it adds another fulcrum(movement) hence adds speed.
AIMANALI 9 months ago

It is very obvious.
surathisuran 9 months ago
@surathisuran you're a blatant troll.. he's technically more of a bowler than Malinga... go back into your corner cunt
productofthis 9 months ago
@productofthis who said anything about Malinga being a bowler. Yes Malinga is a thrower and everyone knows and jeff thompson is also throwing.Jeff produces a round arm throw Malinga throws with inclination that makes him so successful.People like these should not be bowling at this level of cricket as Bob Simpson pointed out but ICC is not sgood enough to look at these issues, they are not interested in cricket only the income it generates.
surathisuran 9 months ago
@surathisuran bollocks mate u need to read up on definition of throwing at no time did thommo bend his elbow in his action
petere101 8 months ago
@productofthis But on a closer look I found Malinga's secret.Malinga does looke likes bowling he only throws occasionally . Unlike Jeff Malinga rotates his shulder in full circle For most deliveries Malinga can be blamed for the slant of his arm which makes his deliveries unplayable.Malinga instead of rotating his arm just pull backs to full exten it like throwing a karate punch(he must have found it in srilankan martial art angampora) and slugs it.technically its a throw.
surathisuran 9 months ago
@productofthis Malinga outsmarted the bowling definition and no one can pinpoint the fault until now! I found his trickery!
surathisuran 9 months ago

MrDebashishMohanty 10 months ago
@MrDebashishMohanty McGrath was 140+ kph when he started, so was Shaun Pollock. When they hit their 30s, both had slowed down to the early 130s. I remember being shocked at how fast McGrath was in the 1991 (I think) Windies tour when I watched an old video of it.
camp3rman 9 months ago
@camp3rman: Yeah McGrath and Pollock both got it up there early on and into their late-20's. When Pollock first came on to the scene, many said he was as quick as Allan Donald. McGrath hit 90mph (145kph) countless times over his career (just in the "clocked" era), but it's not really that big of a deal hitting 90mph so people can easily forget he used to be deadly accurate AND pacey as opposed to just deadly accurate. The last ball of this vid, is scary... there is almost no time from his hand to the batsman. I know someone who faced him at the Basin Reserve and he said he couldn't see it properly, he flinched, went side on and the ball went up his ass... LOL
beethovens9th1 10 months ago
...in fact, just as a sidenote, it's 'hostility' which separates the real quick bowlers and the most hostile I ever saw was Sylvester Clarke in 1981 in a county match for Surrey vs Derbyshire on a hard wicket which then had 15 mins of rain on it.
Stellar openers, John Wright and Peter Kirsten were both 'retired hurt' and no-one looked like they wanted to be out there that day...'Sylvers' was scary.

@FrankenStrat66 Correct dude, Thomo said... if i can't bowl them out, i'll bloody knock them out LOL.
and now the game is for pansies. TV and Sky have destroyed not just cricket with all it's rules it has ruined sport...
beethovens9th1 10 months ago
...what made Thommo so difficult to play was the bounce he got from his action.
A cricket ball rearing up at you from just short of a length at anywhere between 85-95mph is no picnic.
Thimmo was very quick...but it was his action and bounce that made him so hard to play...
FrankenStrat66 11 months ago
...and Fred Trueman was no quicker than Wes Hall...or Roy Gilchrist...etc, etc
It all depends on what kind of wickets they're playing on.
Jeff Thomson was very effective between 1974-76 in Australia because the wickets were hard and fast back then. Put Thommo on a Headingly or Trent bridge back then and Marsh was standing ony 30 yards back.
In fact ask any batsman from the 1975-76 Australia-West Indies series and they'll all say Micheal Holding was a shade slower than Thomson...

LastKnight85 1 year ago
@LastKnight85 it was that and more jeff thomson was clocked at 160 plus after a severe shoulder injury, have a close look at the last delivery it was well over 160 what makes you doubt it ???batsman feared his freaky pace you only have to listen to there stories
alienhunter36 1 year ago
@alienhunter36 I don't doubt he was quick, but not as quick as people say. Thommo himself thinks he could have hit close to 180kmph if he was timed at release. I think it is all folk stories. Because of the lack of speed guns during that time, he became a mystery and the media played up on his speed. Don't get me wrong, I know he hit 160 kmph but I don't buy that he was much quicker than that. If he was bowling now he would be same speed as Lee/Tait/Akhtar I think.
LastKnight85 1 year ago
@LastKnight85 yea mate copy that, they were talking on a local radio station last week about thommo and said with todays tech he was 175 plus ,and when i look at it.. hmmm man! he looks quick,Rodney marsh was standing 80 feet behind the stumps and ball still was rising
alienhunter36 1 year ago
@LastKnight85
LastKnight85 1 year ago
@LastKnight85 Nope Fred wasnt that fast. Frank Tyson was though and his action was very similar to Thommo.
LiamE69 11 months ago
@LiamE69 no, thomson just slings it, no skill in that he had a horrible action, look up frank tyson, he had a proper side on, rotating arm action
lozzag13 11 months ago
@lozzag13 Don't underestimate how much skill it takes to bowl at 95mph+. If it wasnt hard everyone would be doing it.
Yes they got to their extended position differently, and Tyson certainly more gracefully, but from there on their action were very similar all the way through a massive arc to the follow through.
Thommos action might not be graceful but its effectiveness cannot be discounted and I wouldnt go so far as to call it horrible. Now Taits action is horrible in my book,
LiamE69 11 months ago
@lozzag13 ...Thomson's action is as close to perfect as a bowler can be. Perfectly side on, allows the widest arc possible, and doesn't give the bowler much chance to see the ball, ....and bowling arm straight!. Thommo didn't get many of the usual fast bowler's injuries such as back strain, hammies etc.

You know, no one seems to mention that, on their day, a lot of the top guys would be quicker than each other. I remember Marshall at the WACA, it was unplayable, but the rest of the series we never saw that peak again. Thommo, tho, had that particular action plus enormous strength and flexibility.
Beazle00 1 year ago
You can't tell me the delivery at 0:30 isn't 100mph+ out of the hand. Look at how fast it's still rising when Marsh takes it, and how he reacts from it hitting his gloves so hard.

I know it will never happen, but batsman shouldnt be allowed to wear helmets, it would make the game so much more entertaining to watch, Batsman dont fear the fast bowlers these days because they have every protection they need. try going back to the 70s where you have to rely on your survival instinct. It would make cricket popular again!
sakpal69 1 year ago
I think what made bowlers like thommo and michael holding so mythically fast was that apart from over exaggerated myths which cant be proven due to no speed camera technology, is that there were no helmets back then, you genuinely felt for the batsman's life.
sakpal69 1 year ago
when i was growing up in Pakistan, we used to copy thomson's bowling action all the time.

You should have seen him mean!
kaitimebb 1 year ago
@kaitimebb which was his fastest spell in your opinion. Plus is it true about that one bounce and hitting the sight screen almost on the full ?
AIMANALI 1 year ago
@AIMANALI Sorry, couldn't name a fastest, but the days when he and Lillee were out for blood, there was an extra intensity. Like when they went AT Greig. Full credit to Tony, he took it and handled it. Until the yorker!
kaitimebb 1 year ago
Respond to this video... Re the sight screen, i saw balls fly over Marsh, RISING. At the Gabba, that's going very close to the fence on the full, but at Adelaide for example you have a longer boundary. I would say that on any smaller ground it's a sure thing, but I can't recall seeing it.
kaitimebb 1 year ago
i think michael holding was faster than him*** any body has doubt should watch his clips
AhsanRaja 1 year ago
@AhsanRaja Many things can decieve the eye when you're trying to estimate a bowlers speed from a video clip like camera angle, zoom, sound or lack of, bowler's run up etc . The thing to do is just watch the flight of the ball from when it leaves the bowlers hand to when it hits the pitch & ignore everything else before & after that, then you get a fair indication of the pace . On that basis it should be fairly obvious that this is lightning fast.
everkenz004 1 year ago
this has got to be late 90's he's absolutely flying !! hsi action doesnt help either cant see the balll
JavelinMan94 1 year ago
who said he bowled at 100 mph lolzz batsman is playing without helmet and he is leaving the ball like he is playing a medium pacer he dont even look like medium fast bowler lolzzz this is a joke believe me i think waqar younis was 10 times faster than him his Bouncers Yorkers were amazing and lightning fast he use to break stumps when he bowls.

The footage here is actually from Brisbane not Perth. Amiss didn't play in the Perth test. Brisbane's not nearly as lethal as the waca at Perth. I think actually most will disagree with you about reaction time slowing. Whatever the case I wouldn't want to have been either Amiss or Close in these instances.
everkenz004 1 year ago
@everkenz004 that is for sure......reaction time - i know the various arguments - i do really , I am a sportsmen also and I really have my reasons for saying what I did. when Viv first faced thommo 1976 in Brisbane he said "not to make excuses but that wicket was frighteningly fast....". Anyway - I wonder did you see these matches live or ball to ball and what do you consider thommos fastest spell.? thx and great speaking to you.
AIMANALI 1 year ago
@AIMANALI Hello again my friend. I was at Old Trafford & saw Holding v Close & also saw the Lords test in that series. the 74/75 ashes I only saw on tv but saw Thommo bowl in the return series in 75 in England. Moved to Australia end of 76 for 6 years & saw many Packer games. Impossible to say Thommo's fastest but the fastest I saw Holding bowl was in World Series Cricket in Australia.
everkenz004 1 year ago
@AIMANALI You seem particularly interested in my two favourite cricketers ( Thomson & Holding). I have been doing alot of research over time working towards a project on these two & their careers ( which is why I often read the comments on youtube vids about them ). Will pm you some info, opinion & links some time in the next couple of weeks if you like ( v. busy right now ) . Info clears up many of the misunderstandings surrounding the speed studies done in the 70's too.
everkenz004 1 year ago
@everkenz004 LOL you are right. I am going through a tough time in my business in USA and this a sort of pleasant distraction - lol. I grew up wanting to see both of them at their best but never did - I was too young, I have heard stories though . Anyway , yes please send me what you can. Ideally of course any thing on teh World series cricket. thx a mill.
AIMANALI 1 year ago
@everkenz004 Good project. Used to imitate them both. Holding was the Rolls Royce, but this bloke was the Lambourghini. Pity about that injury. Nonetheless, I saw his last 5/50 at the SCG, I was there with my cousin, and it was something I'll never forget.
kaitimebb 1 year ago
does not seem any quicker than Holding at Old Trafford where the wicket could have been a touch slower or a lot slower. The batsmen hopped around AND got hit just the same as Amiss in this clip - even more actually. The reason I bring up old Trafford is 'cause the bowling length was similar ...
AIMANALI 1 year ago
@AIMANALI Similar pace . A few things worth taking into account though: Amiss is 31 years old here & at his peak whereas Close was 43 when facing Holding at Old Trafford & his reactions were not what they once were, Close was also left handed so looked particularly ungainly when dodging Mikey's bullets. As for the wicket the summer of '76 in England was the hottest ever & the wicket was rock hard. The Oval later that series was kept docile as a result which is why Holding bowled fuller there.
everkenz004 1 year ago
@everkenz004 i respect your opinion...however a few things ...at 43 reaction time really does not slow - other attributes go - i know many will disagree - plus Close was always a late bloomer...and capable of handling pace - even Viv said that, that is why england called him back . No wicket was ever bouncier and faster than Perth (clip above ) back than...plus a left handier always looks elegant as opposed to right , all else being equal, unless he is in real trouble, like Close was

WHY DIDNT ANYONE IN THE PAST 30 YEARS TRY TO EMULATE THOMO ?? MMMMMMM HE REACHED SPEEDS OF 160 KNOW BODY GOT CLOSE {genuine} MMM THINK GUYS COPY
mrgenuine1111 1 year ago
@mrgenuine1111 because these days you are not aloud to bowl a bouncer every ball.
Snigaty 1 year ago
that last ball is the fastest i've ever seen. i guess theres not much between him & Marshall at their best. Imagine facing that without a helmet?
Imeldaishot2010 1 year ago
In the words of thomo bloody quick
kingtubbysdub 1 year ago
Such a different bowling action but mechanically very pure. Just shuffle up, wind the arm back and "go wham"! I remember reading (in the 70s when he was shredding our poor sodding batsmen) that he learned to bowl like that from his dad. What I don't understand is why no bowler in the last 30 years has tried to emulate this action. Fidel Edwards was close but he didn't pull his arm behind him before the bowling action, so the arm had less far to travel and less time to wind up to 100+. WHAM!!!

fuck he's bullet. I THINK HE'S FASTER THAN LEE AND TAIT
rodtorre7 1 year ago

To count Lara as one of your bunnies says it all.

that 3rd ball was a good length ball and Marsh still took it over his head with a jump !!

These deliveries are no different than Holding bowling to Close at Old Trafford were I suspect the wicket was a touch slower at the least. in fact Close jerked his head around more violently than Amiss is here
AIMANALI 1 year ago
The second delivery is frightening. There's a bit of in-swing there and Dennis Amiss really only swerves out of the way just in time. Actually he looks at his chest in amazement and wonders how he got out the way of that one. Brutal bowling, but handled by the best batsman of the world at the time - but only just.

If you want to open this vid up and shoaib fastest ball ever up. This to me seems way way quicker.
negooog 1 year ago
@negooog I'm really not sure if the naked eye can accurately gauge speed differences of 5 km/hr or so. The pitch condition and camera angle have a huge role and essentially what you are gauging may not be equal to the speed out of the hand.
It's a delicate exercise and I trust experts with propert instruments to come up with results. Having said that, there is no doubt that Thommo is extremely quick and he could well be the quickest ever.
Imrankniazi 1 year ago
@Imrankniazi my reason was because of the time in his career he was bowling. He is in much better shape here than when he was clocked at 100
