Also, forgot, you don't have to put the slash on the flat side, anywhere will do, however, I prefer to slash the rounded side for ease and safety reasons since you are in more control of the chestnut if you put the flat side to the counter, you won't have to get the knife so close to your hands. I also use a serrated knife for that part. A dishtowel on the counter under them helps keep them from sliding around while you cut the shell. Hope this is helpful!
Horrible, terrible method here. 1- you don't have to cut an X, just a slash to let steam escape, the X is unnecessary and dangerous at times. 2- most definitely soak or simmer in water before roasting, makes them easier to shell, more moist and creamy. 3- I have no idea why she crunches them at the end. If you boil/soak them first the shell and papery skin will slide right off easily and you will have a whole chestnut instead of pieces. Def don't follow this video.
we make them every year for our stuffing for our turkey. They are great to eat by themselves as well. I live in arizona and i am able to find them at my local sprouts or ajs fine foods
Just cut an X in the top and put a wet paper towel over them while they cook. Microwaves vary and the more you make at a time the longer they take. Five minutes for 6 to 8 chestnuts works pretty well. Experiment. It's better to guess too low and put them back in if you have to.
Cooking in a microwave will steam the chestnuts, which are still delicious, but maybe they can be roasted for a short while after that. I'll have to give it a try.
You lucky stiff. Chestnut trees were once very common in the USA but in the early 1900's Chestnut blight fungus almost wiped them out in 40 years. They just aren't common anymore, damn shame. You are a lucky stiff!

We have 3 trees in our yard and just picked quite a few. We are going to roast some for the first time. We have heard so much about them.

For how long? Do you cut just one side or all the way around in the microwave?

Roasted chestnuts are losing popularity in the USA. It is even difficult to find them for sale now days. A real shame because they are delicious!
