I remember the 78 of this very well. Solomon was celebrated in his day but seems to have been largely forgotten these days He was noted particularly for his Beethoven. He was retired from the concert platform and recording studio for many years before his death owing to the results of a stroke.
Besides other remarkable features of this sublime performance was, for people of my generation, that at 5.29 minutes it originally fitted onto one side of a 78. - John Austin, Australia
La musique du coeur continue quand le piano s' arrête... Instrument, interprète, compositeur ... Perfection, pr le lambda heureux de recevoir cette nourriture hors de sa portée... Merci!!!
I don't know why i got tears in my eyes hearing this... thee beauy of course.. but it is more sad or more happy? I guess I should stop thinking and start dreaming again...
Whereas some instrumentalists jump a hurdle at a time,Solomon was one who surveyed the whole course. Thank you, rigel48, for posting this excellent transfer (5 1/2 minutes on one 78 side!). - John Austin, Australia
With pianists of this caliber, there is no need to quibble over who is "better". There is no such thing as a "correct" interpretation of a piece of music; each pianist's interpretation is his/her deeply personal expression. We should understand that what we think is "better" is only a matter of our personal taste in music.
Many think of Solomon solely as a fine interpreter of Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart. However his Chopin and indeed Liszt playing conbined magical poetry and formidable virtuosity to match any of his great contemporaries.
Ècoutez le Beethoven de Solomon - et vous comprendrez peut-etre mieux la rigueur de ce très grand musicien. La différence stylistique de laquelle il est capable, fait d'ailleurs part de cette grandeur...
I award this 4 1/2 GEORGE SANDS...THIS PERFORMANCE HAS A REMARKABLY "STUMBLING THROUGH A DREAM" TIMELESS ETHEREAL QUALITY.
IN THE UNUSUAL STACCATO/LEGATO ARTICULATION IT COMBINES RAW RURAL VULNERABILITY WITH AND AN ELEGANTLY URBANE VENEER THAT SOMEHOW FINDS A HIGHLY ORIGINAL NICHE (IN SPITE OF THE MANY FINE PERFORMANCES GIVEN BY THE OLD MASTERS)
PERHAPS MOST IMPORTANTLY IT HAS A MUCH MORE STRONGLY DEFINED AFFECTUAL-FOCUS THAN MOST.
Ankhsnammon-As you know-I'm a great lover of Dinu Lipatti's playing. For this reason I have no problem with what you are saying. They are both great, and so are Cortot and Rubinstein on Chopin. You may want to hear Mr William Kapell play.He too died in a plane crash at the height of his career-at the age I believe of 31 or 32.

This man was one of the giants of all time- fact!! No ego here- if it's a little fast for some it HAD to be, it was being recorded for a 78!

@larrypittsjr or arguing whether calibre should be spelt that way or the caliber way !

Still there is some kind of degree even to artists of this heights. It's not like apple and orange. Why would there be competitions then?
Danielnoctis 2 years ago
Competitions are for young pianists trying to build a career, not masters like Solomon.
larrypittsjr 2 years ago 7
Yes but if comparing pianists wouldn't make sense why would there even be competitions?
Danielnoctis 2 years ago
Personally, I don't believe competitions have a place in music. Didn't Bartok say competitions are for horses?

Solomon is the best Chopin player I've ever come across. He plays it beautifully.

by far the most sensitive expression I even heard
insjeingrid 3 years ago 3
pourquoi cet artiste ajoute-t-il du sentiment ,de l'expression à une pièce qui n'en a pas besoin???Hofmann reste exemplaire.

I listened to Hofmann, he also plays brilliantly. I would like to hear him play this Nocturne, Opus 27, no 2.
About the supermarkt remark, ( I understand what you mean)but I am sure any supermarket will do great business, I certainly would go there everyday.

the delicassy of well perhaps Chopin himself playing. The British produced a remarkable pianist at the same league as Moiseiwtsch, Cortot.

Chopin n'a pas besoin de cette "délicatesse",sauf dans les musiques d'ambiance pour supermarché.
