He was a great athelete during his time but how could he compete against the best of today that not only use training but also growth hormones and steroids, etc. East German a small country was winning a lot of Olympic medals because of steroid use and how many of todays atheletes now use them? The Olympics banned them and some other drugs.
The Olympic committee shou;d restore his gold medals as Hockey players today play in the NHL as proffessionals and compete in the Olympics.. That being the case for stripping his gold medals they should re- instate tham if they haven't already. To me it smacks of the predjudices of the times.
Mate I'm from Los Angeles and the Rams and Raiders leaving LA had nothing to do with Los Angeles as a market, which the NFL is dying to get back into. It had to do with the greed of the teams owners. The Rams owner was paid $70 million as a personal gift with the purchase to move to St Louis. The Raiders owner too made a bundle to double crossing LA to move back to Oakland at the taxpayers expense. There are 3 groups fighting to build as stadium in LA and 5 teams hoping to move there.
Now you are talking stupid. Football is the highest revenue generating professional sport on the planet. What's more the NFL will expand to Merry old England within ten years and Canada outside of the CFL. There is talk of expansion to Mexico City
@andrewr62 all i remember is what happened to nfl europa. Wasn't it like 30 million lost every year since its inception? Mate you can't even get a team in Los Angeles what chance do you have for japan?
@nabilion Japan has baseball there I think they have a team called the Tokyo dragons, however not sure american football would make it there what Americans call soccer or what europeans call Football might have a better chance there.
This is ture Sav Rocca did begin his NFL carreer at 36. As a punter. His only job
is to kick the ball. At this he is quite good. Not hired at 36 for his toughness or athletic strength or speed. Only his ability to kick the ball. So your statement is a bit misleading.
@andrewr62 But nonetheless he is supposed to be on the field to commit tackles and blocks. That is the requirement of almost any nfl player. Running to make a tackle the at his age in an afl game will result him in tearing his hamstring.
My friend, you obviously have never played football. Football is highly specialized and different positions require much different skills. The NFL and NCAA have many of the fastest, strongest, and most athletically gifted athletes in the world. From gold medalists in track to wrestling and everything in between. Not to mention the courage it takes to take a hit. A respect rugby, have played it in my day, truly football is a whole different animal unlike any game I've ever played.
@andrewr62 nope, i have and let me it this way Vernon Davis does 40 yards in 2.68 secs and bench press 400 pounds and as a tight end he is looking to make offensive blocks and maybe recieve the ball for 6 minutes. No kicking, no throwing. Nick Rievoldt does 40m in 2.92 meters and bench press 330 pounds. As a center half forward he is required to tackle in a defensive and attacking positions, catch, kick and handball the ball for 120 minutes
@andrewr62 oh yeah also one little thing Rievoldt runs 15kms a game and has a beep test result of 14.9. Davis, on the otherhand runs barely 2kms a game and has not been tested for aerobic ability.
First I respect athletes around the world in all sports. There are many ways to classify whow "big" a sport is around the world. In terms or revenue generation,
the NFL is indeed the biggest sport in the world. As far as participation well the is
soccer. As far as any sport being "superior" to another that is just a matter of opinion.
It all depends what you value in a sport or in an athlete.
@andrewr62 nope soccer pips the nfl in both also you have understand how much assets cricket has built up over 130 years of history. You can compare athletes if they are of the same sporting family. NFL players play a football code. A weak one at that. They are built to play only 6 minutes a game executing one or two skills in a attacking or defending manner. you have your inferior athlete there.
TO BE AS WELL ROUNDED AS JIM THORPE AND RECIEVE THE ENDORSEMENT OF A U.S. PRESIDENT AS THE BEST AS WELL AS THE OTHER ENTITIES AND INSTITUITIONS IS CERTAINLY SOMETHING TO LOOK AT. KEEP IN MIND JUST HOW FAR AHEAD HE WAS FROM OTHERS AND HOW EIVERSE HIS CANVAS WAS. IT WAS HIS MIND THAT MADE HIM THE BEST AND HIS SPIRIT AS WELL AS HIS PHYSICAL MAKEUP. IF CRICKET WAS THE GAME IN THE U.S. HE WOULD HAVE PLAYED THAT AND EXCELLED AT THAT.
I'll give kudos to his achievements in atheltics. But baseball is an inferior sport to cricket. As well american football is the weakest football code. Sir Donald Bradman, is statiscally the greatest athlete of all time.
@ShadowCygnus yep, Bradman hit 3 home runs in front babe ruth when he went to america. Baseball players catch a softer ball with a glove. Also american football players only play for 6 mins, whereas rugby players go for 80+
@andrewr62 remember you live in america so your media is quite filtered. Also sachin tendulkar, andrew symonds, kevin pietersen, shane warne etc are all multi-millionaires. But most money goes into growing the sport and creating cricket infrastructure around the world. Hence cricket is the 2nd most popular sport in the world.
@andrewr62 Exactly, remember the stereotype of ignorant americans. I don't like to say its true, but it comes cases it has to be. Also, i agree with vanilla coke54 with aussie rules players being tougher. There is a reason sav rocca started playing in the nfl at 36.
@theprofessor23 I would love to see Jordan throw on some pads and get in the way of Thorpe when he ran the pigskin. I'd like to see him try and outrun Thorpe or even out hit him. I'd like to see what Jordan would say about being a better athlete than Thorpe.
The worlds greatest athlete, way before steroids. Pure talent. To bad everyone else capitalized from his abilities except for him and his family. Lived and died a poor humble man. I hope that his son is able to give him a decent burial back in Oklahoma, birthplace to the worlds greatest athlete.

No Michael Jordan sucked at baseball. I think most of us weren't around, so we don't really know, but Jim Thorpe I would still say is the best, just based from what I've heard.
Basketball is not thestandarized test of a person's athletic ability. The decathlon is.The basis of athletics is the ability to run, jump and throw. Not shooting jumpers.
@imaplayjason you're right.basketball does combine those three aspects.and on a very high level.i guess the only way to compare Thorpe and Jordan would be by how they competed in individual sports.

Fact is he is still only a punter who plays perhaps 5 plays per game. Your ignorance
of football is glaring. Punters my be required to tacke but could go through their entire playing career and never be required to block.

@andrewr62 im talking about all players as well. This is a non-issue anyway your sport will die out in 20 years.
