Dice moltissimo pur stando in silenzio!!!! NON SMETTERO' MAI DI AMMIRARE QUESTA DONNA, QUEST'ARTISTA, MERAVIGLIOSA...semplicemente!
Stunning. This IS acting, this IS getting into the character. And tnh tension between her expression and Diw Walkure is almost unbearable... it blows me away.

Kidman is a no-trick pony. Her emotional expressions never alter from one character to another; she's always Nicole Kidman and I have never gotten lost for a second in any performance she has ever given. She's just a name yielding X amount of $ from poor misguided saps. As for this scene, staring-off into the distance for extended periods of time does not make one a good performer. My grandfather stares out a nursing home window all day long and no one is handing him Oscars for it.
Therefore the scene worked on you, it made you think of something melancholic like your grandfather staring out of his nursing home window, face it Nic is spellbinding in this scene, it's pure cinema.
I cannot really blame you for liking this movie as you obviously lack (like most Americans) the essential tools to distinguish a good picture from a terrible one. Reading these posts makes me feel as though I am in a Twilight Zone episode were everyone is brainwashed to see something that simply does not exist. I recommend ordering Film Comment issue Vol 42 #5 (Sept / Oct 2006) and reading Paul Schrader's essay entitled 'Canon Fodder'. This will help get you started.
I recommend you keep your ego in check and quit acting so pretentious. If people like this movie and you have a problem with that, then it's your problem, not theirs. Geez.
Art is subjective? So...this is art? First prove that the movie was created for an aesthetic value rather than a financial return and maybe you can deem it as art. Ps. Name-calling = you're a rube incapable of debating intelligently.
Well I can't prove why this movie was made and neither can you. It is what it is. If it speaks to some people, who are you to decide that they're wrong? There are no rules to any piece of art, I don't care what you say.
Excuse me for butting in. But I am sure the studio would have been happy had Jonathan Glazer's motive been more money based, as this movie tanked. I am sure the difference between Birth and your garden variety mall movie is apparent to just about anyone. While I didn't love Birth, I respect it for taking risks, for Kidman's performance, and for a couple of scenes that are frankly greater than the whole, in my opinion. Movies like this should be encouraged.
After I saw Birth I too was shattered to learn how unpopular it actually was. If there wasn't anything more going to this film than this one scene I think it'd already deserve an inclusion on every "best ever" list in the world, but it's not at all just this, the whole movie is absolutely fascinating. Will def. rent it again this winter.
Yahoo!!! finally met some people who actually like that movie. Most of my friends thought it was boring. By the way: my name is Stefan, 42 yrs old, living in Belgium. Cheers !
The actress had a rendez-vous with her partner at the opera... in this scene the music illustrates her state of mind... as you can probably tell, she's on the edge of a total mental breakdown... what is showing on the stage of the opera-house is of no importance... it's her mental state and the dark colour of the music that matters... Capice ? By the way : Grrreat Movie !!!
she's processing some very recent information she's had. Here you see her trying to concentrate on what she's seeing, but also what she's thinkging, which I imagine are worlds apart.
i must admit i didn´t like the movie very much.although the idea behind it was great and so the music was,but i think the best thing about the film was nicoles performence.this scene and the very last one prove once again her great talent.
This film is a masterpiece. It's sad that America didn't see this amazing work. The acting, script, gorgeous cinematography, directing...all flawless. There's just nothing wrong with this film. People didn't give it the light of day because of the subject matter. They must've been busy watching "Dude, Where's My Car." Oh well, their loss.
"Birth" was one of the best ten films from the past decade. Ask any open-minded and intelligent person, and they'll agree.
One of my favourite movies and one of Nicole Kidmans best work. The time I rented it I had to see it 3 times in a row. You always notice new things about it. It's awsome!
I have to agree! She was spectacular in this! I love how in her eyes you can see her confusion, her frustration, and her eagerness to please Danny Huston's character, but you can tell her world is coming apart, after what the little boy said to her! Tremendous! What is that song playing in the background? The symphony?
