@song656565 They are always outside my window here in Australia.
They're in plague proportions in some places so finding them in your garage isn't all that uncommon. They can't hurt you but they carry a lot of diseases.
@charicebiggestfan Their heads (they have a dog/fox like head), their use of senses (as said in the video) and the fact that they are not predators but herbivores, they mostly eat fruit. :)
I have to agree that the enclosure is horribly designed and became my immediate disgust with the Columbus Zoo. If your a Zookeeper with the Columbus Zoo, please contact the Topeka Zoo for a great idea that gives the bat a better environment and patrons a better experience.
WARNING: Some african flying fox/dogs (3 species look on wikipedia) carry the deathly virus ebola this will give horrible bleedings from all holes it can get out and within a week you will be DEATH. So if you ever go see some flying dogs in parks you can touch or whatever ask wich specie it is!!
This is just an autistic warning so dont reply me.........
The poor thing. It should be roaming the skies over some jungle, covering the place with its poop while making lots of noise. At least give it proper housing to fly around and climb some real branches.
@monkey42299 Are you kidding me? These bats are amazing! So big, they can eat your head if they wanted to. Their main diet is fruit, though. It just looks fake because the metal isn't as comfortable on their feet as a wooden branch would be.
Plus, they're the only kind of bat that doesn't have a butt-ugly face.
Does this bat ever get to actually fly? The wire fence seems to be causing the bat discomfort. Generally standard diameter wire is not a good idea for animals like this bat. It would be nice to have a representative of the zoo explain why that cage is considered a humane place to keep the bat. As it stands right now, I'm seeing an animal that is poorly cared for by being kept in a beautified cage that is no better than the medieval structures zoos used in the 1950s.
@Randomwitch1 Shut the fuck up you dumbass. First of all, you cant even see the whole enclosure, this is just a small part of it. Second of all, if you look in the back its not blocked in there, it can go out into the open. So stfu you hippy, that animal is more safe there than in the wild!
@Randomwitch1 Are you out of your MIND? First off, it's obviously a well-constructed area, WITH open spaces that thing could EASILY fly in and out of. Chances are this is a zoo somewhere and that bat's wings have been clipped so letting it go wouldn't exactly be an option. Thing'd die in 24 hours. WATCH a video before going hippie on the internet, will ya?
@Randomwitch1 How is this a bad enclosure, exactly? It looks like a really big place, with plenty of vegetation, and he does not look deprived. Especially considering that he is in a zoo (a well known zoo, in fact), he is probably a very happy bat. There are much worse places he could be in.
@Randomwitch1 Where it can live in a wilderness it wasn't raised to understand how to survive in? Moving it out of a place where it gets regular food and medical care to a place that will probably kill it in a few days?
@Randomwitch1 Which idiots upvoted your dumb ass? First off like BoredomPie stated, you can't even see the entire enclosure. Secondly most Bats like these are rescues that were injured and can't survive in the wild so they use them to educate people on how important bats are to our ecosystem and all the good they do. Lastly, WRITING IN ALL CAPS MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE A RETARD. You would benefit to actually know what you are talking about before you speak.
the bat is georgeous look at the face it has the face of a dog, like a jack russel terrior..i never knew they have such a beauitiful head, puppy like...
That's kinda cute. There is a theory stating this specific species came from monkeys at some point. I think this looks like lemurs and primates like them.
@ivaneduardo747 That's not exactly how it works. You're closing in on the right idea, but a single species of bat cannot be descended from a completely different Order. So I think what you mean to say might be paraphrased as 'bats and lemurs (prosimians) probably shared a common ancestor. " Just a compulsive edit from an ecologist in training.
@ratcrib Flying Fox: Bats of the genus Pteropus, belonging to the megabat or Megachiroptera sub-order, are the largest bats in the world. They are commonly known as the Fruit Bats or Flying Foxes among other numerous colloquial names.
Flying Fox is also know as Fruit bats. they are harmless to humans as well as other animals when not in danger. and besides at is also cute especially the young ones
I find this creature adorable as well. Actually aside from the paranormal scare of bats carrying rabies (dogs are just as likely to carry rabies, and in fact more wild dogs carry proportionally more rabies that wild bats), bats are such helpful critters to the environment - keeping crops from insect overload, pollination... ect)
I always get worried about these animals that have extremely well developed ears.
Since zoos are always full of dumb little kids that don't know the first thing about manners, they, as you could hear in this video, speak loudly like little cretins, and the sound of all their voices echoes and reverberates off the walls to create an even more exacerbated sound that these animals with their sensitive ears have to listen to all day every day. It makes me wonder how often they suffer headaches.
Omg he is gorgeous!! I'm assuming it's a he. Can't tell from a vid. Lol. I love working with animal rescue, etc. Not too long ago a local rescue group had a baby bat that had been wounded. People should NEVER be afraid of bats. They are usually more afraid of us. They are so sweet and fuzzy!!
@TheReolus I didn't say they don't. Yes, some do. You know like wild ones? And it's actually rather rare. I will tell you this aren't real bats? That doesn't even make sense.
