I read the book and saw the Ice Man tapes. Movies are always changing the truth for artistic license. This happens to books which are made into movies. The actual story of a event is more compelling than a director's cut or view, in my opinion.
I think that this actor does a terrible job of portraying Kuklinski. Kuklinski was always very nonchalant and nonthreatening. This actor's facial expressions make it seem that he's constipated.
Gandolfini may look like Kuklinski at the end of his run and in the interviews you see when he is in prison, but he was thinner at the time when the movie is protraying. Given he was still a big guy....but i dont think Gandolfini would be a good fit, Shannon could use some stock to make it more believable, but gotta find a happy medium i guess. Much better choice than Roarke though.
James Gandolfini is too fat to play this character. When Ice Man was young, he was skinny. Later in life he got big but that was after a lot of his murders took place. Too bad Javier Bodem (no country for old men) is not polish. He would have been perfect to play this role. I am looking forward to the other Ice Man movie that will have Mickey Rourke playing the Ice man.
@TheFireWithin2779 Kuklinski was skinny only until its 30 years... After, he became much fatter than James Gandolfini. In fact, i think Galdolfini too skinny to play this movie...
Michael Madsen could also pull it off nicely. Watch him in Donnie Brasco. Whatever actor they settle on, I just hope they make the script absolutely factual and not a bunch of Hollywood embellishments. There is no need to tweak this story as it is extreme enough as it is.
This actor will ruin he movie. James Gandolfini would be perfect for the role as he looks more like him. I think Gandolfini's role as a hitman/enforcer in Quintin Tarantino's "True Romance" is almost exactly how the Iceman went about his business and dealt with his victims once he had them. Kuklinski actually had a nice pleasant personality most of the time which is what made him so deadly. Society outside of his circle had no idea for years the demon that lied within.
If that is supposed to be Robert 'Mister softee' Pronge then the scene is all wrong. Pronge never worked with DeMeo. Richard 'the ice man' never killed anyone in that park, all he did was feed the ducks sometimes alone or with his family. The ice man killed pronge while he was in his Ice cream van via 5 shots from a handgun. If this is what i think it's meant to be then its all very offtrack. If one of the character dies in such a off track way then i can imagine how the film goes! :(
The most chilling thing about Kuklinski is how he could do horrific things in such a matter of fact way. Badlands conveys that detached sentiment rather well (although the characters are reckless and Kuklinski was not). Also, James Spader's character in Two Days in the Valley is a good example.
@TheBeachside21 you couldnt finish reading the book and had to keep putting it down, and i couldnt put it down and read it in a couple of days, brutal book, the guy was a fucken psychopath, i cant wait for this movie, its gonna be fucken awesome.
The director needs to read the book! Kuklinski ambushed Pronge and shot him to death in his truck in his garage, and this was a while after Richard turned down his offer which started the rift between them. According to Richard, what really set his mind on killing Pronge was he was also planning on poisoning the water supply of a small community just to kill one family. Richard said Pronge was the most dangerous man he ever met and one "sick-motherfucker", now thats saying a lot coming from him.
six foot five inch (196 cm), 300 pound (135 kg)... Shanon seems a bit light to me, he looks like a man trying hard to twist his lips. I wish you guys luck for the project. Why not a "John Carroll Lynch"...?
First of all Gandolfini says he does not want to play another mob guy. Secondly shannon is a great actor revolutionary road and great in boardwalk empire too. Finally this is a test scene in order to get funding/actors on board not the finished product. Franco is playing Mr. Softee/Pronge.
Just so everyone knows, the little perfume bottle thing that Pronge was going for and that Kuklinski ended up squirting in Pronge'smouth was the infamous cyanide spray.
I hope this film has the Sammy the Bull ending and not some ending where it fades to black with him going to jail, telling you he died in prison. We all know he got hit.
true gandolfini would look alot better but shannon acting skill is on another level and i think the sopranos is the greatest but id rather have shannon what he lacks in looks he will def make-up in acting
i thought gandolfini would be the perfect choice given the fact he looks alot like him but to his credit michael shannon does sound alot like kuklinkski but doesnt look much like him and is he wearing heels in this cos im pretty sure shannons not 6'5
@ty1977 Kulklinski needed to be played by a bigger actor I mean. Gandolfini looks more like Kulkinski and is a good actor, maybe not as good as Shannon but not bad. Pacino is Italian and played a Latin in Scarface and Carlito's Way, Gandolfini could certainly pull it off.
@lamareaton thats a good point about pacino and scareface. I cant believe theres talk about mickey rourke playing him too. may as well just get danny devito to do it
Not bad, I like the pace - except for those shitty fake drained colors infesting everything now. :-/ Make it look like a real film guys, for pete's sake...not Lord of the fucking Rings... lol Here it just looks like every other dumb wannabe hip movie out there, nothing classic about it. Moustache a little too heavy, eh. I still think the best Kuklinski would be Rex Linn, somebody cast him.
And the reason Kuklinski evaded the law for so long was because he did seem like a genuinely honest Polish worker, a family man. Gandolfini is always going to be known for his crime movie connections. Shannon here with his moustache and plain clothes looks so inconspicuous. Really, really good casting choice.
@kristianhorizont Gandolfini is the obvious choice but I doubt he'd go for it, it's too similar a role to Tony Soprano (criminal life and personal life clashing etc). I think Michael Shannon will do a superb job, I have complete faith in the guy.
he isnt big enough to play big rich kuklinski and rich didnt wiggle his nose like bewitched lol he made a 'clicking noise' with his mouth when he was getting angry.
i agree with a lot of others, this movie could of been huge if they got gandolfini on board. i know he's played tony soprano a long time and thats what most people will see, but he is a GREAT actor too.
By the way, Michael Shannon is a PHENOMENAL actor from Chicago. I just LOVE watching the Man work. He's incredible, and I'm more than confident that he'll get the job done, when it comes to fulfilling his role, here.
According to Wikipedia there are 2 movies in the works
One with Mickey Rourke will play Kuklinski in a film based on Philip Carlo's biography The Ice Man, Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer. The film was expected to start shooting in spring 2010 in New York, New Jersey and Florida.[19]
And the other shown in this video, based on The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer which will star James Franco and Benicio del Toro.
Looking at Micky Rourkes wikipedia page, there is no mention of him taking this role. Since production was expected to take place in 2010 I doubt that it will happen.
Not sure why they would have 2 movies anyway, especially around the same time. It would be cool to see Rourke, Franco and Del Toro in the same movie though!
No Gandolfini as the Iceman? That's pretty disappointing...they shoulda ponied up for him. He's got the height, weight, same male patern baldness...the only guy that could play that ruthless mofucka to a tee.
@fastlenny69 Looks like Franco was replaced according to this video, he was supposed to play Mr. Softee but Michael Wincott is in the role (end credits 3:45)
To make this movie a great movie. Follow everything that was true about Kuklinskis life. Dont add anything that shouldnt be there.

They like to take artistic license
