Once i have created the mask and projected the image back through the projector, how would i get each of the buttons and dials to light up a different color and not all the same video footage?
@ATGxQuadPimp either, use different video for each button, or use one video with lots of different coloured areas .. you could globally change these using a filter or the inbuilt color correction in M8
@deepvisual I'm using Resolume on a PC,but i assume it's similar in purpose to M8,i just can't figure out how to add a different video to each map. It's probably so simple, the penny just hasn't dropped yet. Thanks for your response.
thanks for getting back. I take it you mean that when I take the picture I need to make sure I've 'cropped' the image size of the camera to the size of the projected screen......as near as possible?
Hi, this is a revelation! I don't know much about lenses but the lense on my digital SLR is 18-55mm and I have an epson EB-X7 projector. Would these two work together or do I need to get a 28mm lense? Thanks
hi mann, i only have a windows laptop, i would like to do this as a part of my collage project, is there any way i can do this using a Windows OS, what software is best for basic mapping ans layering, i have Arkous and i cant so it on that :S
the only way in m8 to use multiple masks is to use one 'mask' layer per item - its important that your masks dont overlap too much or they can crop another part of the image.
also when I went to resize the mask using the Global Mask layer tool.....and had to size down my mask...it ended up revealing video over the outter edges....
Guess I should keep the original photo full frame to what the video frame will be and not crop it?
Cheers for all the top tips mate! At the end is that just one layer of video on the Codanova or seperate elements on the different buttons & dials? So how would you do the latter please?
hi deep visual!this is some very good advice but could you please answer the question of JaggedEdgeMedia about the position of the camera lence...thank you
Does it matter that the camera is above the POV of the projector, or should I put the camera lens in the precise position of the proj lens? My only concern is that my throw distance is a lot smaller, about 1 meter. Maybe the perspective will be thrown off slightly at that distance?
What I ment by basic is that these are basic shapes, squares and circles. Your method is also weak in that you are just removing bits of video with a mask, advanced projection mapping for me would be things like Pablo Valbuenas Augmented Sculpture, I was not trying to piss you off my good man, your technique is good i have also used it, drawing masks in photoshop over the real objects in fullscreen is also a good way of getting this effect. good luck to you sir have a good day.
well, its squares and circles because the codanova is made of squares and circles. The intention being to demo the procedure. Of course the masks can be very complex. you could always then take the mask into AFX and tailor individual clips to fit, but no point really.. anyway, I wasn't pissed, just confused.. thanks..

@fiftynorth
no not at all.
use a focal length that has the same throw ratio/lens angle as the projector lens.
this technique only works if you use the same lens angle on both projector and camera.

@fiftynorth
maybe. try keep the zoom in the relevant area, so the lens ratios are the same

I wish i could do stuff like that. Wish i had the imagination anymore.
When can we expect to see this applied to common concerts and festivals?

correct re masks.
transparent and black .psd or .png and oversize

and one more question.
Is there a way to mask just a layer...
so that could do the mapping thing based on multiple masks?
I had a look at the online modules and could not find one.
Is there something in the filters that can be used?
thanks

When creating the mask in photoshop....what mask type should i be creating. Been confused with this before.
Basic what should I treat
A) the area that I want video to "punch thru"
B) the area that I want masked off or not to go thru.
the options that I think I should use are:
1) Black
2) White
3) Transparent
I created one with having the "punch thru" as Transparent....
and BG as black which seemed to be correct.

there are a few vids. each one positioned under the mask and scaled down so they dont overlap.

parallax error is worse with wide angle lenses and short throws, but almost none existent with long throws.
so it will be a big help to get the camera as close to the projector lens as you can -

just use the perspective transform effect in VDMX much faster and you don't need a camera.

because??
I've accurately mapped 51 different images in one screen. If that's your idea of basic, then lets see some of your advanced mapping
