This break has changed big wave surfing allthough this is big I reckon there are much heavier rides. Secondly he wasnt even getting covered, he was sitting out side safe as houses. The wide open ocean swell and the fact that the change in depth at that particular pass is so abrupt.

As you said, the reef causes the break but keep in mind that the reef there is extremely shallow. Pair that with an ocean swell and you get a freak of nature of a wave.

Wave measurement is almost impossible to standardize. You have to take into account, face, back and ridable face + how heavy it all is. Generally the Hawians under-estimate, Seppos over-estimate and the Aussies...we get it just right! :P
