It seems it certainly originates in greter Khorasan and is shared by all peoples from this area, even though the instrument has different forms. The Kabuli Rabab, as seen on this video, seems of have beeen developed by Ustad Muhamed Omar's father (or grand Father), agreat lineage of Rubabkis.

ruban is was first made somewhere in kandahar. Ask Mr hamahoy sakhi. read history before typing rubish. Even dolack and tabla was invented by afghans and now indians says they have invented it. It dont matter who invented it but its a good instrument.

Rubab is an old Khorasanian instrument made by Amir Khsorow Balkhi. Balkh is in north Afghanistan and the native residents are Tajik.
