It really surprises me again and again that everyone refers to his commonly known operas. "Mozart actualy paused his works on "Die Zauberflöte" for the assignment for "La Clemenza di Tito". Although I love "Die Zauberflöte" I personally consider "Tito" refreshing and very mature in a lot of aspects. For a nice ouverture find the one from "Die Salzburger Festspiele 2003 in Youtube
as mucg as I love Mozart and his music, I've not heard every overture he wrote. But my personal favourites are: Die Zauberflote, Le Nozzi Di Figaro, Don Giovanni & Cosi Fan Tutte, with this one (I'm hearing it for the first time) close behind Don Giovanni.
it's a presto 4/4- not alla breve. marriner is beating a presto alla breve, which is not right. It's too fast. Mozart gave clear indications of the general tempo areas he was after, one can only learn that by looking at lots and lots of his scores. the presto alla breve movements are moving in fast halves. Presto 4/4 are moving in fast quarters..one can beat this in 2, but the half is then not going to be to fast.
It's faster than I'd have done it. Certainly an unusual tempo, but after the initial shock has passed, it doesn't sound unreasonable. It sounds like a lot of fun, actually.
And let's not forget that they did generally play faster in Mozart's day than we do today.

Well it's an orchestrial piece. I've played this in a wind band at this speed and let's just say it wasn't pretty.
