In 4 hours that I was watching your programs i did did learn more concerning restoration than anything.... I you see Ramon say hi to him....I did not ofund part 4, I hope that God th great one be with you and your family. Never forgotting that God is good not sometimes, but alltimes. I am traying to get a Festiva Turbo 95 or 98 to see what can we do on it....

    Thanks

  • Thanks Pete,

This is very helpful for my resto, I don't have a lot of rust but I only want to do it once.

  • your funny as hell pete. Ill consider you my friend pete! Ive learned a lot from your videos!

  • what do ya do about the rust that forms when you wash off the vinegar water!??!? I have the same problems with removing dioxidine and any other rust treatments that are washed off with water!

  • @shredBucketheadshred You take your d/a sander with either 180 or 80 grit and clean it off, ruff the surface up and then epoxy prime.. Pete

  • @diyautoschool aaawww thats more work lol , just been told the rust I thought I was getting on the panel was actually just gold stuff and not rust after I used KBS Rustblask and not to worry about it now just gotta epitech it! I'll try vinegar water another time i recon.

    CHEERS for the reply

  • @shredBucketheadshred Thanks Pete, great teaching. I am here in Dominican Republic Watching.... great teaching

  • @louderno Thanks for watching and glad your learning. Pete

  • Pete,

I have to say I have been impressed with this three part series. While I don't judge a book by its cover I want you to know that you kept the colorful language down and I enjoyed these much more than some of your others. Not to say you shouldn't express yourself, its your video, just thank you for sharing your knowledge and making it easier for some of us to listen to. You are a great fountain of old school git er done with no BS. God bless ya for sharing.

  • @grok64

I have to agree with you there grok64.

    My Friend Pete.

Great tip on the vinegar water.

Would be great to have a local guy with your honesty.

    Yes, God bless you sir.

  • be careful with vinegar it's not just something magical you put on, it's acidic and it's doing it's purpose. once you get it on aluminium, chromed or zinc plated metal, you're screwed :D

most of the time it's a blessing, because there's almost no labor at all. I'd still go over with baking soda to neutralize it

  • Mr Pete: Great video...wish I had know this before my last rusty resto. Questions fer ya:

    1. After the vinegar mix, how about rubbing baking soda/water mix over the area to neutralize the vinegar residue?

    2. Lastly, seems like a rub down with mineral spirits would be good before priming...that ok?

    3. When you mix up a 5 gal container of vinegar/water mix, surely you can put tha top on and save it for the next job, right?

    4. Spray paint...upside down and spray to keep it from clogging.

  • @crazeyspivey You got it backwards, the vinegar is used to neutralize the baking soda, not the other way around. Rubbing mineral spirits on your freshly applied bondo before priming would not be a good idea, no I don't keep the vinegar water mix because the cost of the vinegar is very cheap and there's no need to keep used dirty water, and yes that is a good way to keep your spray can paint tips clean by spraying them out upside down.. Thanks Pete

  • I used this technique on metal project (not a car)! Thanks Pete.

  • Texas Pete, the vinegar philosopher... lol!

  • thx for another trick i didn,t know vinigar and water way to go pete thx a bunch very helpfull vids

  • nice video dude, how long to leave before I apply primer or do you just go straight to topcoat.

  • ROFLMAO! Love your videos. Please keep up the great work!

  • Nice informative video.

    Mark.

  • Dude. This is the most informative video I've ever seen on YouTube.

  • Nice video ,Thanks Pete.

Bodyshop Pete, your freind Pete.Awesome Pete.

  • A HUGE THANK YOU!!! Regards from Portugal !!!

    You're the best!

  • @mserra75 Thanks for the GREAT COMMENT. Pete

  • ok so 4 to 1 scotch and the whats the ratio of baking soda to water for clean up?

  • Red oxide that is cancerous and spreads.. but now its turned into a stable Black oxide that is more stable. Once paint is put over it, and isnt open to air and water anymore, it shouldnt spread. Also doesnt hurt to put some baking soda in the water to help nuetralize the acid from the the vinegar, especially in pinchwelds.

  • @MultiShadow1969 Thats a good point made about the baking soda, your absolutly RIGHT! Thanks for the HELPFUL TIP!

  • @MultiShadow1969 if i'm not wrong, i think that is the acid contained in the vinegard that do the job on rust. if u neutrilize it with soda i think that is exacly like to clean your car with stinky water :D at this point better clean water

  • @jenacbxx Well you want to neutralize the acid once it has done its job and removed the rust. The last thing you want to do is paint over metal that still has acid on it, especially in the pinch welds and other hard to reach areas.. otherwise you car will rust even worse than it originally did, within a few months.

Baking soda is an alkaline, where as Vinegar is an acid.. you are basically returning the PH levels back to normal.. if you soda blasted your car, you might not need this.

  • so wont the water make it rust when you go to get the vinger off the car.it wont come back.thanks mark...

  • @LoverVamp1 No it won't because once you clean it off, you dry it off as well. Pete

  • I just want to say Thank You !!

  • Hey Pete , i have rust underneath the car and i will be replacing my gas tank and lines, so while i am under there if i remove all the loose heavy rust and get it down to just surface rust can i use the 4 to 1 mixture? thanks for making my life better! and also for the tips and tricks like you're vinegar and water mix.

  • @CHIBA280CRV Yes you can use the vinegar/water mix, but also you might want to consider getting some POR15 and brush a coat on the area to double protect it. You don't need all the prepping stuff just the POR15 paint. Take it easy, thanks for the comments and support. Pete

  • If you used technical jargon 90% of the hillbillys that watch the vids wouldn't know what the hell you was talkin about

  • im using some stuff called rust cure, is it any good vs the vinegar/water treatment?

  • @vflo85 I can't really comment on this one, Ive never heard or used rust cure, but I can say, all this type of treatment stuff you buy is about the same, just different name.. Take it easy and good luck. Pete

  • thanks pete great help

  • thanks again pete, really a big help, i'd like to be a pro like yourself one day

  • @hownychea With the right attitude---YOU WILL!

  • Pete just want to thank you for all your videos. Really enjoy the knowledge your laying down im in Carrollton tx. If your going to do some hands on classed Id love to join even have my own car to learn on

  • My friend Pete, you rock!

  • You are very generous Pete, good karma to you!

  • Perfect just what I was looking for Thanks Pete!!!

  • Hello Pete, I am getting ready to remove the surface rust form my wagon, when I apply the vinegar water and scrub with my red scotch bright pad, how long do I let the mixture set before I clean off with clean water, and wipe clean? I am working out side here in Az, now that it is getting a little cooler the mixture will not evaporate as fast. Thx Andy

  • Great stuff Pete. Stick it to the man. yea. going to vin/water the inside roof to my 69 cougar.

  • hey great video

  • Doing this on a 73 AMX with the gelled phosphoric converter. Applied it with a scotch brite, waited 20min, then wiped it down with wet cloths but didn't dry it! Now the rusted areas are black which is OK but the rest of it is covered in a white haze. should I start over, or just re-wet with water and scotch brite and dry it off or just scrub it off with a dry scotch brite?? Planned to use my POR15 in the battery master cyl area then prime the whole engine bay with self etch primer. Any advice?

  • Hello Pete, Love your videos man....your a big help to people like me just starting to learn this stuff. I have a question..... after using the v/w and then the rust-kon can i let the metal sit as is until paint (may take a little time before painting) or should it be painted right after this process.

  • @Kelseytharp88 No, you want to prep it for epoxy primer, and shoot 1 coat on the bare metal, to seal it up.. You can always come back later and grind or sand the epoxy off to do your body work later.. Pete

  • What type of gun do you suggest for spraying Pete ?

  • @SRVjediknight In todays enviorment, I would suggest an HVLP type gun, if your a beginner at it, start out with a cheap gun and work your way up to a nice one. Spray guns can get really expensive, so watch what you guy. Sata is tops to me.. Pete

  • Hey Pete, I am starting on my first project car, a 69 Mustang Coupe, and it is a bit rough. The guy that tried to restore it before me, tried covering up everything with bondo and didnt handle the rust prior so it is a mess. Do you suggest sand blasting the whole car? It was primered already, but needs to be completely redone. What would be the best way to strip it down to the metal?

  • @DaneFiori I wouldn't sand blast your car, you will warp your panels and then have a real mess on your hands. I would strip it with aricraft stripper, depending on how much bondo's on the car, and how long ago it was primed will be the factor of how long it takes and how much stripper you will need. Probably atleast 2 gallons. It will be a mess, but it sounds like you already got a mess on your hands.. Pete

  • I like your video pete keep up the good work your great. Also i wish you show a video on how to remove chrome trim from the sides of a old car like 69 R/T and the chrome around the window this would save lots of money for people that dont know how to do this little job the right way . thanks pete

  • Thanks for the great video, more confidant know to prep my vw beetle :)

  • Pete your amazing, i found out not long ago that you can use mollasses in water to get rid of rust but this vinegar way is much faster. Thanks for all your videos keep them coming.

  • What would be cheap satin black primer to put over that, Pete?

  • @mitmaks The Matrix brand is pretty cheap in cost and high quality in use. Pete

  • Keep it up pete you the bes ive been folowing your steps in my 68 mustang coupe thanks

  • Pete, your rock dude!!! Great tip on the rust issue. Your style reminds me of "The Red Rocker", Sammy Hagar for some reason, LOL Rock on!!! Thanks buddy!!!

  • Have you used Rust Mort or Rust seal products, they contain phosphoric acid that neutralizes rust and then you can do bondo.bodywork on top of it

  • Pete, If you clean with vinegar water will it hurt if it gets on body filler

    Thanks

  • @11ingenious I wouldn't suggest to get any on the bondo, I usually prime all bondo'd areas then clean with v/w water mix.. If you have gotten any on the bondo, it shouldn't hurt it, just lightly sand it off till it's gone. Pete

  • Just done this on my sills, super clean, worked a treat :) just hope it lasts!! thanks Pete!!

  • @saphcosmike Sounds good, glad to hear your happy with the results. It will last forever if preped right. Take it easy and thanks for the support and comments. Pete

  • You the man Pete! Thanks

  • @antoniobzdotcom Thanks for the comments and support. Pete

  • Pete I have a question, in the near future I will be painting my 55 Chevy. I have watched many of your videos which will help tons. My question is on painting chrome bumpers and stainless window trim. What prep is needed for this task? If you ever have time it would be great to know what you think about this. thank you for all of your time and sharing your knowledge.

  • @harleyghost To paint the chrome, you will have to sandblast the finish off to rough it up. for the stainless steel-it's a good luck situation, stainless is it's own metal, and doesn't have a coating on it, it's polished, meaning even if you sand it to a rough finish, you still have the problems of paint peeling off, you can sandblast them and then use some self ecthing primer such as NCT PPG primer that has an acid tone in it for gripping purposes.. Take it easy and Good Luck. Pete

  • wow buddy new intro xD i sub :) good to see you guys back in action

  • Hay Pete! Informative video! Thank you.

  • Pete

Thank you again for teaching everyone this way to handle body prep. I for one have learned a lot from you and can't thank you enough for your generosity.

    Steve

  • Great tips that will definitely save us some money. Nice vid!

  • thanks for the knowlodge.

  • A couple of things!! For smaller parts, I have a 55 gallon plastic drum that I mounted rebar hanging down on the inside, connected on the outside with copper wire. I hand the piece I want to derust in a solution of washing soda-from the supermarket cheap and water. Then I hook up my small battery charger-positive to the rebar and negative to the piece-like reverse plating, the rust comes off and goes to the rebar, simple and it does work. I use 10 amps on the charger.

  • GOOD JOB PETE SAVING ME MONEY I'LL NEVER BUY METAL PREP AGAIN

  • Thanks for saving us some money with this tip-Mike in NH

  • @ThePleiku10 Thats the plan--Saving money and doing it yourself.. Take it easy Pete

  • My friend Pet , question ...can I mix 4 to 1 vinager in a spray bottle...that should still work right....I'm not sure....

  • @TheJoecaprice Yes you can do that if you want, just watch how you spray it, if the wind catch's it, it will get on other stuff and leave rust spots... Pete

  • I'm here for you pete, I'm also a custom rod and restoration expert in upstate NewYork. Good to see you out there getting er done!! Love the vids

  • Hey Pete, you have the best REAL WORLD auto school on the planet! Great videos, I used the butterfly motormount plates on my Lark subframe project just to name one thing I used from your vids......Was that a Scotchbrite pad to apply the vinegar water?

    Art

  • this is the coolest trick i ever seen and i have been working on cars for over 30 years will be useing this thanks to my friend pete

  • time to eat some frenchfries off it

  • So after this it is not a good idea to touch metal after you prep it for paint?

  • @AXE2501 After this step is the next lesson on DIY Automotive School.... Stay tuned and watch close... But to let the secret out--you want to epoxy primer it, after this step....Take it easy Pete

  • @AXE2501 No you don't want to touch the bare metal with your hands. Get it in epoxy primer ASAP
