As george Carlin noted,"the biggest american myth is "your vote counts".But if one MUST vote for one of the two major partys the choice is simple. With Obama you have half a chance of some type of reform in a 2nd term. With a republican you know damn well what you are going to get. They are transparent about it.Privatization of all traditional government programs, the last nails in the coffin of democracy and implant a total facsist state. But never doubt the idiocy of the electorate.
"our task is not to take power..." he is for a movement for a movement's sake...he is himself a liberal, a radical liberal...
in general the wall street movement is not anti-capitalist, it is anti-capitalist excesses...it is going to learn when it fails...when it realises that it was not radical enough and did not address the class structure
A world-class speaker on the streets of New York city - can it be, that America is showing some signs of renewal? New paradigms lighting up? I hope so - "democracy is coming, to the USA" (Leonard Cohen) I hope there are too many heros like Hedges to let this great country go on getting fooled and parasitized by the corporate / political weevils.
The problem is a tiny percentage of individuals invested into corporations are buying control of government policy for their private gain.
The individual investors in corporations all have their one man one vote like we do BUT their money making corporate entities have set their sights on commandeering the distribution of our tax dollars for their benefit at our expense.
What we have now is a New Economic Serfdom. The top % love national debt because they loan our own money back to us.
Chris Hedges has been the most eloquent voice I've heard thus far making headway through the movement. He's just incredible, and I'm proud to have his support.
I got news for this guy there is a conservative middle class that is huge. The big banks are just part of the problem, big government is a huge problem. It is intruding into every aspect of our lives. Soon it will be telling you to get up and go to sleep.
@dafjkldfa You just got here ,i guess you might be another guy been paid for propaganda,NO the problem is not "big government" The Problem are the crooks who only care about themselves and the money
@rafyselles The powerful in this country get that way through strong gov't help. This takes the form of subsidies, corporate welfare, bailouts, etc. This means the problem IS big government because the "crooks" you are talking about get their power through legislation and through the redistribution of wealth (taxation without representation). End this gov't coddling and you severely limit the amount of power any business has, conglomerate or otherwise. We must learn to accept failure.
Typical left wing ideology. I noticed that he didn't even mentioned George Sorrows the guy who is funding this entire thing which is also backed up from the american communist party and the american nazi association. Most of the so called ancestral heroes of this movement were communists.
@Bock728 There is no proof for any of those claims. Unless you are in touch with George Sorrows, The American Communist Party, or the The American Nazi Association, or have a reliable source from a accredited news organization. Nice example of false attribution, Glenn Beck.
Well I certainly did not quote Glenn Beck ( who is a moron) I quoted someone who you seem to know nothing about who was John Addams founding father and so on. It just cracks me up that you and most of the left just do not get facts. I mean you cannot even comprehend what that means unless you have a telaprompter in front of you. Just look at their websites and do some "real" research for yourselves. Oh wait my bad you need someone to do that for you to on top of everything else
@Bock728 Hey hey now.. I am what would be considered 'left' or liberal (although I would call myself on the side of the "factual, ethical, conscientious, equitable, reasonable, & logical - oh and also common sense).. But I know & love John Adams. (Although my heart is with T.J. - he's my main man!) And I happen to research EVERYTHING.. Im actually a freaking nut about it! I take notes so that I can cross-check whats said when watching the news & documentaries, 4 goodness sake. And I work too! :|
@Bock728 Sooo..?? What..?? - Any more false generalizations..?? Any more sarcastic slanderous remarks (which are also so very false - I mean really?! "u need someone to do that for u to on top of everything else" ?!?! Thats jst dumb. I love 2 work hard. I think it FEELS good 2 do a good job. And I'll take the Pepsi/Coke challenge that Im actually far more self-sufficient & capable then u are, across the board.)
Not even any more (ironic) spelling errors 2 offer (Adams)?? Nothing!?!? - Okay. :)
@LittleDesertFlower78 my last comment was intended to rebuke retardedcore and if you read the words "you and most of the left" you would have seen that. In my regards for spelling Adams wrong I admit my mistake. I however I misspelled Mr. Sorrows I mean soros on purpose due to the fact that he is extremely dangerous person on the left. Oh I could also comment on your grammatical choice of words, but I am better than that. quick run spell check.
@Bock728 JST now realized u replied.. Now, Id like 2 respond:
1.) Regardless of who/what u were critisizing specifically, u included the words "and most of the left". As stated, I am (what u would call) 'left'.. Hence my comment 2 u.
2.) Re: Sorrows/Soros - Yeah, I got that. Thats why I didnt mention it.
3.) Thnx 4 not commenting on my grammar.. I appreciate ur sentiment. - But the errors in grammar (& MOST of the 1's in spelling) I make, are done VRY consciously & intentionally 4 reasons. :)
This guy is great! I love how he keeps namedropping these philosophers and their books that the audience has probably never heard of. He's not dumbing down his opinions for these people, he's giving them DA TRUTH! Very cool.

@Salmontarre Hedges is NOT a hero, and he will tell you this much himself.
Chris is a man with a message .. urging each one of us to stand up, educate ourselves and others, and organize to make this and future movements have the impact we all need.
Calling Chris Hedges a "hero" passes the buck and puts him on a pedestal. It casts him in a light where he and only people like him can make a difference. You are wrong. We can all make a difference. We just have to stand up and stand together.
Be sure to look up Randolph Bourne as well as to read the brief "The Twilight of Idols" by Nietzsche. Very important to review the basics on an annual basis (Gandhi's Autobiography, Thoreau's "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience" and King's "Letter from the Birmingham Jail").
I live in London in the UK which is one of the biggest financial centres in the world. This sort of thing needs to start happening in London in the UK. How about someone setting up an occupy the London Financial District group on Facebook?
"Obama functioned as a brand... but the consequence of a brand is to make passive consumers confuse a brand with an experience. This {Occupy Wallstreet} is an experience."
For once, people need to believe that a third party candidate can actually win. Support the candidate and get the message out to the alternative public. To DBgoobert, the Tea Partiers aren't the ones that elected their candidates. Do you understand that it is the Kohn Brothers and other right-wing wealth that spun the message to the Tea Partiers that in turn allowed these candidates to win. It's marketing, man, and big big big money behind it all.
Americans can learn from the Arabs how to fuck their Nazi government. The people fucked both military and police and when there was such thing that someone goes down, the people wouldn’t look on it like a freak show. They would retaliate, help the others and fuck them back! They were so organized and spread the word of the fight. That’s why nothing could stop them. It happens to you only because you let it and it want be changed by words, only physical actions. Spread the word.
Nice rant. Too bad he missed the best part of his own story, having a bill that Richard Nixon could pass. That is real change. As long as you keep living on the streets looking like bum and hippies, the opposition can marginalize you. Without clear directions for Washington, they can claim simpathy with your cause without action. Wether you agree with them or not, the real strength of the Tea Party is getting their candidiates elected and holding them accountable.
@DBgoober1 It took years for enough opposition to grow and demands to coalesce into actual legislation in most historical cases I'm aware of. 3 weeks is like a blink of an eye. Concrete demands will come into sharper focus over time I think. More important though, is that the movement keep away from established, traditional systems of power, including the corrupted Democratic party. If it can manage to do so, the more powerful it can become and the more effective it will be.
@Ebertfly Taking your time to pick candidates you trust sounds reasonable. But seriously, a third party hands victories to the republicans. Although you may agree with them on some aspects of smaller goverment less but more effective regulations, most of your movement would find christian conservative hard to swallow. Your best bet is to hyjack a wing of the the democratic party. Let them work with tea partiers on subjects you agree on.
@DBgoober1 The Tea Party is getting taken over and drowned out by their own elected candidates who only wish to become a celebrity amongst them gain popularity, and use them to push forth their own power hungry political agendas. All their candidates can provide for them is statements about how much they hate Obama and TALK about the defecit. The Tea Party is aiding and praising these politicians who participate in the very things that they are against. and its a lesson not a rant!
I love Hedges, I really do but he was completely wrong about OWS. They didn't have to break OWS, it broke itself.
