I like that Russ or Riff didn't have to dance ballet like the other guys. He looks so good just walking and jumping about. Still, I love Russ Tamblyn best in Tom Thumb and Peyton Place.
I think this cast had every ballet boy in NYC that could pass for straight. The music for this prologe is Leonard Bernstein at the top of his game, note the use of bongo drums and three xylophones during the chase scene. The same for the exciting, outstanding choreography by Jerome Robbins.
If anyone wants to see a budding actor, musician, stand up and script writer, please check out, comment and subscribe to my channel. I've been a long time lover of film, and am a complete sponge of film knowledge from the early 1900's to present day. I am becoming more passionnate and eclectic with my taste by the day and would love to chat or get some feedback from you guys.
I was screaming," RUN BABY JOHN RUUUUNN!!!!"! I like Baby John :D ! At times hes tough, and at other times hes a...what can I say? Baby (no duh, thats how he got his name! I think.)!
@MisterAbs003 Matt LeBlanc would have been about 6 years old when this film was made, so he's just about young enough for the part, though I see the likeness :)
I have to say this. I can handle dancing newsies, I can handle dancing sailors, hell I can even handle dancing cats. However I draw the line at plieing gansters. Really guys, really? Still like the music though.
Nothing like a "sissymary" prance across the street to scare the bejeezus out of everyone. :-) Looks more like they were going purse shopping than going to a rumble.
@tonybklyn This was one of the first time Hollywood paid attention to gangs, mild as they were in the movie. Racisim was also addressed, never done in an "A" movie before-also a modern day Romeo and Juliet theme. Had it all in a format Americans would watch, and not be "offended." South Pacific addressed racisim in the mid 50's. Check out some of the footage of that with the Lt. and and the girl from Bali. I do understand why 50 yrs later this is amusing, and I mean no offense.
i tell you, it's the most fun to walk around your local town shouting 'pah' and 'pow' clicking your fingers, and kicking your legs into the air. trust me, i've done it.
@TheFlyboysevere and how would you know i don't have any interest? i have loved this film since i was 8. i cry every time i watch it, and think it's a beautiful story. just because i post a comment that doesn't suggest this doesn't mean i 'don't have the intellect to understand this'.
alright already ! Guess I was a little acerbic in my criticism - I took your comments to be sarcasm and i will defend this musical epic and all its' brilliance , against all detractors .
@allhopeisgone333 If you want to troll, at least do it properly and not embarrassing yourself. I might not be too fond of this myself, but you come off as an eight-year-old.
The lyrics from the original version of"Gee Officer Krupke"(from the stage musical)are more controversal than what was performed in this movie version. Also..that tune was performed after "The Rumble".."Cool"was performed before the rumble..why? I'll never know?
I am told the producers were allowed to film these dance scenes in the actual area of West Side Manhattan with the boarded-up and vacant tenements in the background before they were torn down to build today's Lincoln Center.
@StupidLamb251 dancing nowadays isnt in that kind of view as the dancers of yesterday. Ballet is good for many things, but in the society today other styles have evolved in the same manner. the first thing men think of is no more than ballet.
