I thought the Twilight books were great ! I didn't like the movie very much !! And I love how you say that vampires don't have rules and I laugh when people say that Twilight goes down because Bella get's pregnant there fantasy/vampire books and people shouldn't take it so seriously. THERE MEANT TO BE FUN.
And I read two of the Sookie books from Trueblood and hated them sorry not my cup of tea.
I've watched the whole first season of True Blood and loved it. So I wanted to see how the books compared. I finished the first one and it follows along pretty well until the mid-to-end part of the book, but I definitely wasn't disappointed or anything. So I hope you like that book. I've ordered the second book in the series and I can't wait until it arrives so I can see what happens next! Thanks for the great book review :)
After hearing about The Screwed Up Life of Charlie the Second, I decided to check it out. I could not stop laughing the entire time! It definitely is pretty graphic- I didn't leave it laying around the house to save my parents a heart attack in case they flipped open one of the pages.
Everyone I've heard of that read Kite Runner loved it. My Isreali friend actually read it in it's original Hebrew... but of course he could read that, and I only wish I could.
I just finished reading a Chuck Palahniuk book "Diary". I would recommend it but Chuck has quite a sick and twisted mind even tho his subject matter is always intriguing. And given the books that you said you liked... you might not like his writing.
Nick, I'm just about through Dead Until Dark and will be going and buying each book as I complete them. We'll have to discuss. It has a bit of graphic novelishness, which I love (heh). It really makes me love the HBO series more. The Glass Castle was the book that got me back into reading again... so I really love that one, too. Thanks for the mention! :D
The fourth book was great, if you get a chance also read The Host. I believe it's going to be another series but it's very good. I would suggest listening to the first Sookie Stackhouse book so you can get a feeling for the characters and the voices the reader uses. The Time Traveler's Wife is one of my favorites, I've read it once and listened to it once... also given it as gifts to a couple of people.
After your Summer Reading video, I picked up the first book of the Left Behind series. It really wasn't that bad and quite interesting. I don't think I'll go on to the second book though.
Started the Twilight series about a week ago though. Tore through the first book. Terribly addictive and enticing. On the second now. Slow-going, as the first half is very dull. Getting better though.
I do highly recommend The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice though. Must read that.
Thank you very much for the update on what you have been reading. You read a lot more fiction than I do, but that's okay. Here are some books I have recently read that I found very good. For the genre of history: "The White Man's Burden", by Winthrop Jordan. For the genre of biography, I would recommend "The Most Famous Man in America" by Debby Applegate. And a controversial but good book: "god is not great" by Christopher Hitchens. Thanks, again, and keep reading!
'Left Behind' series of 16 best-selling novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, dealing with Christian dispensationalist End Times: pretribulation, premillennial, Christian eschatological viewpoint of the end of the world.
A different type of book for you but I think you will like it. Primarily it is about how does a father teach his son wisdom, but makes you think, a very good read.
I lost respect for you when you didn't spew nothing but hateful bile out about Twilight, but then you made it up for mentioning the Time Travellers Wife.
Wow, freaky! The Kite Runner and The Time Travellers Wife are the two books I got for Christmas. I'm on chapter 11 or so of The Kiter Runner but I'm really enjoying it so far. I asked for it since I read Khaled Hosseini's other novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, which is now easily one of my favourite books. If you haven't checked it out you totally should. Other recommendations, some of my favourite books from the top of my head would be Memoirs of a Geisha, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atonement...
"The Glass Castle" really surprised me with how much depth it had. I wasn't expecting it to be that great, but it definitely provided something else entirely. I really don't know if I'd have had it in me to publish a book like that if I'd been in her shoes.
I never read "The Time Traveler's Wife", but I'll give it a shot. I'm waaay behind on good reads.
Great recommendations! Speaking of VAMPIRES...I saw a fantastic Swedish movie called "Let the Right One In" last week that deals with teenage vampires...really tremendous film...check it out! I'm sure it's playing in NY....
I just finished Twilight, and I wasn't blown away. I feel like Stephanie Myer isn't a great writer and I really felt like she had an agenda when writing the story.
I really want to check out that Dead on Arrival series. I kind of fell away from True Blood just because of being busy and whatnot, but I really liked what I saw of the series.
I'm really glad you liked Siddhartha! :) Some books I read this past year that I really enjoyed and you may enjoy are The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene and In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O'Brien (I love his writing style). Have fun with your reading!
The Sookie Stackhouse books (Dead Until Dark, which became True Blood) I thought were really interesting. They aren't amazing but they're very entertaining.
I've heard Glass Castle is amazing. It's on my list. And I loved Time Travelers Wife--very interesting!
I recently finished 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close'. It definitely made my list of favorite books.
Woot! Books!!!!!! I've decided that being a reader is the worst thing--I'm never caught up, there are still MAJOR authors, MAJOR books I've never read, Err!! Never enough time.
Recommendation: No vampire education is worth ANYTHING without having read THE VAMPIRE LESTAT BY ANNE RICE. I think you'll love it--it's super homoerotic (as well as being a great well written saga!)
