So annoying, as an American car fan living (and born) in the UK I STILL have to put up with people making jokes about terrible handling and crappy mileage, and, most insulting of all, inefficient engines, yet here we have a 2.2 litre FOUR CYLINDER engine (with 'only' two turbo chargers) pushing a car to 195 mph (and this was in 1981!!!!).
Proof that American engineers were (and still are) amongst the best in the world, the 'suits' just didn't see fit to let that shine in the showroom. Great car!
this m4s weighed aprox 2550 lbs a dodge engineer who worked on the car mentioned this on the internet search I performed. the final drive ratio is a 409 rear
Unfortunately, no. I used to have an old car and driver or road and track that had a rather good article on the car. Maybe you can dig up some info via the 'net from those sources. I gotta admit, finding info on this car is tough now.
@TheRumJumbie Yeah it's a shame, some of the forgotten cars that were technological masterpieces. I figured this car was probably pretty light considering the power plant it has. I just saw one of these the other day at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum and it was awesome.
BTW that's me above (AxerJk), I posted that comment on my other youtube account. My bad.
I'm looking forward to visiting the WPC sometime soon, like before I die...
It's gotta be great.
Btw, I 'd figure the M4S to be 2500 or below. I mean, a Miata is around 25/2600. So with 400 on tap and really good aerodynamics this thing must've been a blast to drive!
@TheRumJumbie The WPC is definitely recommended! I've seen some great concept cars, as well as great classic and muscle cars. One thing that's kind of a bummer is they only show a few concepts at a time, they rotate the collection.
I figured the M4S would be light as hell, considering it's small engine, and the fact that it can go so damn fast! What a masterpiece!
@CHUUMPASS kind of... but it does show that we didn't just steal ideas from Japan recently, ie SRT4's.. although they have japanese parts..... yeah.. point is lol, we knew we could do it, we just didn't... our market was either 4 bangers for economy or V8's for performance, no in between, now we have to look at all options ... grand nationals were turbo V6's and awesome cars that were american, but they didn't last long.
@silfocus84 yea, i get your point, and right you are, no doubt, yes the problem with most performance oriented low displacement 4 cylinder or sometimes even sixes is that they don't last in comparison to solid bullet proof american V8, i think the chevy 350 is the perfect example, bullet proof engine that can take unbelieveable amounts of power and low end torque, while being reliable and long-lasting. that's why most project/kit car-builders always go with american V8 engines as powertrains.
@CHUUMPASS definitely agree. our big motors last longer than the rest of the cars they are in. they have people rebuilding motors from 1920 (I know not a performance engine but solid as a rock) and they run smoothly with just a cleanup... won't have that anymore.
@silfocus84 the thing is, after the late 70s, early 80s gas shortage, american car companies got lazy. they had the technology at the time to make high horsepower cars with low displacement, with decent gas milage but the cost to build and the amount to invest in all new machining was to high for them. In the end it was all about how to make the most money instead of building quality cars.
@CHUUMPASS yes, the US is very capable of making awesome engines, but when it comes down to it, most only car about how much profit they can make, and the quality of cars suffer because of that.
I'm sorry, but I wouldn't want the car without gullwing doors. The narrator said in the future less might be more. The Government has weight restrictions that make cars heavy. I be this car is below Gov weight restrictions of 2200lbs. Stupid you can drive a 500lbs motorcycle on the street but not a 800bls, 4cyl car.
Nothin like some 200MPH tape, I wanna say this was done at the proving grounds in Chelsea,MI on M52. I'll have to ask my buddy, he used to work there around the time this car was tested. I seen a picture of the place in HOTROD, looks very similar, but not sure enough. If anyone knows the actual place, feel free to correct.
true but it would become unstable due to aerodynamic instability but spoiler with the right angle could be more effective at getting speed then without it
2:07 No seatbelt! Look away kiddies! These guys are f'ing hilarious, goes to show safety reg's were not as tight back then, lol. Awesome find on the car though.
Already been done. Cutlass Calais at Bonneville quite a while back. 230mph+ with a "Quad4" FWD. With enough room, you'd be surprised what a 4banger can do.
You're full of shit. Also, at those speeds breaks would not work, you would need a parachute and alot of room. This car is not meant for drag racing, and any car that drives on the road does not need rocket speed.
This car should be in Forza Motorsport 4.

Such a great video. Makes our restoration work totally worth it knowing that the design came from such a unique and amazing car.

If only Chry Co would have used the Turbo 2.2 in a RWD platform.
Ford was going full-bore with the 2.3 SVO progam at this time too.
Ultimately both companies had all but abandoned the force-fed fours in favor of v-8s.
Too bad too. Would have loved to had an all alloy DOHC in a sub 3000 pound car...

For some reason it wasn't wildly popular then.

so this shows that U.S. engines can also go what i call the japanese/euro way of squeezing out mauch HP from low displacement 4 bangers,

At 1:23 you can see the 5 point harness. The other times they show the driver he was probably cruisin' the infield.
Wouldn't have had a camraman in the car at 190+. Remember, this was '84 or so, and cameras were still pretty big then.
TheRumJumbie 1 year ago
@TheRumJumbie oh yeah forgot about how big cameras were back then

They tried it with no wing and a smaller wing from a daytona they both did not provide enough down force for the car to be useable.

195 is slow, i can build engines which go 300 to 500 mph
500 is the limit a car on ground can take
myso2008 3 years ago
really? just 500mph? then why is it taht the last 6 LAND speed records were over 500mph? And the latest one at 760.343 mph? The ThrustSSC.
and i seriously doubt you can build a 4 cylinder car that will go 300 to 500 mph. I doubt you can build one taht would even pass the 195mph mark
