Also, did you notice when the P{ikmin die in battle, they are either sat on or randomly blow up? Like, at 1:22-1:24, that slug sits on the Pikmin and then you see a ghost rise. That means you got a death tole.
It all depends. If you have all the ship parts, you get the happy ending, if you have the 25 required parts, you beat the game but don't get the best ending, and if you don't get the 25 required ship parts, you lose and get a funny ending. I'll probably show all of them at some point.
I don't think you can even if you cheat. In pikmin 2, you have as much time as you want. As for why, because it adds some challenge to the game and makes sure that there's actually a storyline.
