@Japanobuster :)? Strange question because every european must know the answer at long time ago. The first letters those Japanese had obtained is Chinese characters. Nobles in the capital had used Chinese language as formal language at making government issues and then had put Chinese characters with useful pronunciation into Japanese for notation. That Chinese characters had become mothers of Japanese Kana. So Japanese still "are long to" Chinese characters for writing compound concepts:D
