Senna still holds the record of 6 MONACO VICTORIES. A record that has NEVER been broken Senna was awesome. KING rain or shine , the POLE-MASTER and the undisputed KING OF MONACO. Huge loss of an awesome man and talent.
@mushrume In fact Senna already had 61 poles in 7 years, at the end of 91. He took only 1 pole in 92-93 period (in Adelaide 93) because of Williams' total technological domination. His final 3 poles came in 94. One thing which has to be pointed out is most of Senna's poles were done when they used Qualifying tires, which nobody would practice on as everyone was saving them for their actual flying laps, so nobody knew how much grip exactly they would offer. Senna was able to feel how much.
That is an amazing lap time in 1989. I mean if there was an HRT F111 racing in 1989 it would dominate the first 4 or 5 races of the season perhaps, and then, being Mclaren, they would beat and HRT F111 in a 1989 car.
i miss these days of F1 when you had proper stick shift none of that stupid flappy paddles, when there was competition and not ridiculous rules it was all based on your driving not the computers
@1906Scorpion well that about the skill is right. But I think that F1 cars nowadays don´t almost drive by themselves. This year you can see a lot of driving mistakes and sliding cars. I think that the driver is very important today. A good example for that is the McLaren Team. Two drivers, two different driving styles but both styles can lead to victorys but in a complete different way. So if the car drives almost by itself, there wouldn´t be two ways to drive it.
More power, less grip, manual gboxes, no power steering, no gimics/tricks, less aero... just because the stop watch says a big number, doesn't mean its easier!! lol
@jimnebob Well said! I raced karts for nearly 10 years - my 200cc kart on old tyres did the same lap time as my 100cc kart on new tyres - but by god it was 3 times harder to drive! Similarly 2010 F1 may be a few seconds faster - but its MUCH MUCH easier than it was 20 years ago.
i believe that tire technology has come a ways since the 80's and so has braking technology . this accounts for alot of the differential. the actual power to weight ratio is lower on the new ones. of course chasis technology and 2o0 years of data is helpfull also .
i just want more free engine reggs. like 3.0 tens max would be fine . and let them have un adultrated but non adjustable on the fly aerodynamics
In terms of power and weight - the 1990 cars were just as high performance as 2010 - evolution in aerodynamics and mechanical grip make the 2010 cars a little - not a LOT - quicker - but also make them a LOT easier to drive.
[Also, Monaco is so tight and narrow that the physcial width of the car (the wheel track width) makes a difference to the radius of the car's line - 1990 cars were about 75 cm wider and on corners like Monaco's 1st gear hairpins that gives an advantage to the 2010 cars.]
@jobrien2001 Yes, but it wasn't until like... 2004 I think when they converted all F1 cars to V8 engines, im not sure like but its pretty recent when they were converted.
You caneasily see that this car is the 3.5l naturally aspirated V12 from the air intake above the driver, in the 1.5l V6 turbo model there's just a roll bar, no air intake.
@PulletSurprise V10s were pretty much the norm from 96 on. I think Footwork used a V8 at one stage alright but the last V12 was the 1995 Ferrari. Other than that it was all V10s until the V8s were mandated.
@samsemtex 1996 Footwork, Forti and Minardi used V8 engines and everyone else V10 engines, then 1997 Tyrrell, Minardi and Lola used V8's and everyone else V10. 1998-2005 V10 for everyone, and 2006 V10 only for Toro Rosso and everyone else V8. And I correct myself, McLaren used Honda 1.5l v6 turbo 1988, then Honda 3.5l V10 in 89 and 90, then Honda 3.5l V12 for 1991 to 1992, then Ford 3.5l V8 1993, Peugeot 3.5l V10 1994, Mercedes-benz 3.5l V10 1995, MB 3.0l V10 from 1996-2005, then 2.4l MB V8
compared to now it is slow he would be dead last but for his time it was fast its F1 look at how Ferrari and Renault did after stopping development this season
Actually- 20 years ago F1 cars were not much slower than today's cars- the swimming pool section is remodeled these days and thats worth 2 seconds- probably only about 8 seconds slower. And even more importantly- they were harder to drive despite being a bit slower- BECAUSE they were not as good performing cars in terms of handling, balance, ride, stability etc - not just pure speed but controllabilty.
Ask Brundle what is harder 1992 or 2002 - 1992 by a mile!
I learned this principle of Slower = Harder (sometimes, depending why) in gokart- we (my dad and i) had 2 karts- his was a simple regular low powered 100cc kart and mine was a 200 cc twin engine high powered monster with 5 times the power (like a F1 V F.Ford). If we swapped the tyres so that he had good new sticky tyres and I had worn out hard compound tyres- they actually did the same lap time- but his felt like cruising on a lawnmower and mine a psycho wild bull - 10times harder to drive !
Are you serious? These cars had 1200hp. Cars nowaday have only 800hp for higher safety. Cars now are easier to drive. So we can say driving in 90s needed more skills. And this is Monaco! watch other videos.
@InTecknicolour a v12 turboacharged never ran, that would be a nonsense! in the 80s turbocharged 4 and 6cylinder raced, the maximum was an 8 cylinder Alfa Romeo which was not competitive.
The cars nowadays would be tactiley easier to control but no easier to drive on the limit. Cars nowadays are 8-15 seconds a lap faster than anything from the 80s even without the immense straight-line speeds and as a result, are much more demanding of a driver's reflexes and visual perception.
They're also harder to drive, physically, pulling an extra 2Gs than cars from the 80s. Also, the MP4/5 had 700hp, about 80 less than nowadays...
@FormulaOneFan4Eva I wouldn't say they're that much harder to drive. These days drivers can rest their heads if they get tired on the side of the cockpit, before the mid 90's they had nothing to rest their heads on, often you could see drivers leaning out of the cockpit, exhausted. Then there's the manual gearbox. I remember reading about Mansell collapsing on the podium because changing gear was so exhausting for him.
@FormulaOneFan4Eva yeah, the mp4/5 had 700 hp, but the mp4/4 had 1200, a little more than nowadays cars. besides, if they are 8 seconds a lap faster is not only because of the power or the speed, that's too because of the brakes, the technology all over the car, its normal than 20 years after the lap is gonna be faster, but what harder to drive means i think before was harder, if you dont think so you should listen to lewis hamilton in top gear talkink about that mclaren. sorry for my english.
@FormulaOneFan4Eva You have to remember that braking was a far more demanding task (as the drivers had to slam it harder and longer). The cockpit was unconfortable and hot (much more than today) which meant more physical fatigue and fluid loss. Changing gears was a hard task, since it was manual and drivers had to change gears at about 2000 times in a single GP, which was not only tiring, but sometimes led to blisters and bleeding. Continues...
@blainyrules 1989 cars did not run 1000BHP in quali, these 89 cars ran the 3.5L V10's, around 700HP. And Monaco was a longer track back then, plus along with the fact that its 22 year old tech.
Thank you for having noticed it. And look the way he passed into siwmming pool, the most difficult turn of this circuit(that now has been screwed and is by far more easy). Senna speed in that turn was only attained by the others in 92/93/94 ! They calculated that there was more than 0.5 sec diff between Prost and Senna only at this place. Which shows how Senna was superior.
thats right. Senna was particularly effictive in a few spots: Casino Corner, Lows hairpin, swimming pool and Rascasse. notice how he is not close to the barrier in entrance of Tabac corner, some guys thinks it is important to be so close there, but Senna was't! he concentrated much more on the following swimming pool corner where he is only a few centimetres from the rail and let his McLaren really flying. fucking brilliant!
