Yeah, Peter didn't do Yellow Submarine. He was supposed to, but it didn't work out. A few years ago, George Harrison said that Peter had made a career from having done Yellow Submarine, when he hadn't. (Not the exact words). Peter did just fine on his own....
The deeply expressionist animation style that later became known as "psychedelic" was actualy, as far as I know, pioneered by Harry Smith in the 1940s, but was only minimally popular for 20 years.
I may be imagining this, but wasn't there a similar 7Up commercial with a tune/song? It may have been slightly later, 70 or 71, but I definitely remember a psychedelic 7Up commercial with some variation of the "de lemon/de lime" song. Any thoughts?
I'm so sorry, please dont read this, u will die in seven days if u dont comment this on 10 different vids, u have 1 hour, and if u do, tomorow will be the best day of ur life, Sorry,i really hate these things, but i dont want to risk! lol
Right... poor Heinz Edelmann, often mistaken for Peter Max. Incidentally, I believe this commercial was produced by the now-defunct Ovation Films in NYC. I used to work there as a kid. If I can remember correctly this was one of the spots on their portfolio reel. I wish I had kept my hands on one of those. It was chock FULL of great animation like this!
yeah, this is very similiar to yellow submarine, but the info needs to be changed. to correct popular belief, peter max did not do the yellow submarine animation. but he did alot of other cool stuff
This is clearly more influenced by YELLOW SUB than Peter Max, who did NOT work on YELLOW SUB but was glad to take credit when that assumption was made.
I heard that one time, in like 1967, Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters snuck into the 7 Up factory and spiked a vat of 7 Up with mescaline. And a bunch of people drank it and freaked out, and sued 7 Up. And then as part of the settlment, 7 Up had to give all of these products away, like Mustangs and boats and stuff, which led to this commercial.
The animation of Yellow Submarine has sometimes falsely been attributed to the famous psychedelic pop art artist of the era Peter Max; the film's art director was in fact Heinz Edelmann. Edelmann, along with his contemporary Milton Glaser, pioneered the psychedelic style for which Max would later become famous, as quoted in the book Inside the Yellow Submarine by Robert Hieronimus and Laura Cortner (2002) (ISBN 0-87349-360-5), Max had nothing to do with the production of Yellow Submarine."
OK,Just to clarify:Max did the design drawings for Yellow Submarine. The money was not correct and he walked off. Edelmann in fact did complete the animation, but using Max's designs. I have been to Max's studio many times, there on his desk is a small sculpture of the sub itself. Doesn't he get credit for the original designs, he created and invented the characters and scenery !
That maybe true but the horrible movie caligula was actually directed by Tinto bass with Bob Guccione heling in the production. Bass leaves cause things are going his way and Bob Guccione is given credit. Thats how history works, I suppose : /
That maybe true but the horrible movie caligula was actually directed by Tinto bass with Bob Guccione helping in the production (money). Bass leaves cause things arent going his way and Bob Guccione is given credit. Thats how history works, I suppose : /
I'm sorry, but Peter Max had absolutely nothing to do with Yellow Submarine. He did not do original design drawings and was never hired in any capacity to work on the project. It is quite possible that his work INFLUENCED the look of the film, but that is all.
Have Peter agree with your statement or it's bunk.
You'll find he won't, because it is false, and if your statement gets too much press it may result in a defamation lawsuit with Edelmann as rightful plaintiff.
I wish you wouldnt use words like full of shit. As previously stated, I have been a Peter Max representing vendor for 30 years and have had many private conversations with Peter Max and his staff. He did in fact draw the designs and then left because he thought the money was wrong. Edelmann completed the film, and was credited for it. You can say what you want. Edelmann went off the deep end and Max is a billionaire artist businessman today.
@artbargainer I wish you wouldn't use words like billionaire unless it's actually true. Despite the impressions some people have of their favorite entertainers having unlimited wealth, very few entertainers are actually billionaires. There's Oprah, and Paul McCartney, and...who else? Martha Stewart at one point but I think not anymore. Trump maybe, but he's an entertainer because he's a billionaire (if true) - he didn't become a billionaire by being an entertainer.
Its actually true. Max is a billionaire artist , so is LeRoy Neiman, Yaacov Agam, and Damien Hirst,,according to their close staff. I know Max, Neiman and Agam over 30 years. Hirsts wealth was published in the papers..
I was going to answer this guy, but if he's going to be so naive as to ask a question like that, he's either baiting me or perhaps the dimmest, most vacuously naive individual in the world. I know quite a few art dealers, coincidentally. One bought three original Dali lithographs from me this past February; let's check YOUR credentials; who are *you*?
Heinz Edelmann did Yellow Submarine, not Peter Max. Most likely though, this have been done by someone associated with Milton Glaser who was doing this stuff before both of them. I wish commercials were like this today--very fun.
This must be from November or December given that "Yellow Submarine" didn't premier in the U.S. until Nov. 13 (and this commercial is an obvious exploitation of that).
