the red light is a military and law enforcement tool that can be use for may things. its a low density light that will light up your area but can not been by people from a distance. example. the navy only permits the use of red lights on their carrier decks at night durring black out conditions so they do not give up their position. so you can see why this can come in handy at night hunting or fishing.
@crashez21 not exactly but if you can find a casting bubble you can. which is a bobber that can be filled with water. this adds the weight to cast the fly and lets you control the sink rate with more or less water is the bubble. not really fly fishing but it is fishing with flies

After you eyes become adjusted to the night if you use a regular white light and look at the light it will take at least another 30 minutes for your eyes to readjust to the low levels of light at night. The red light also does not travel as far and will not spook the fish or deer or other animal you are stalking.
yes the red light is very good beacause like deer and other animals are color blind so it helps with not spooking animals but i don't think fish are color blind beacuse of all the bright flashy lures we make they shoulden't be.
the red light is for map reading at night to light what you need to see but not to give your posistion away to fish or even the enemy
