@brucekentallen First, I thought it was a really good daily, i found myself doing this same thing the other day practicing a 24 probe 4-gate build with exact timings. Its nice to know im on the right track. Secondly, trying to talk and concentrating on the game can be a rare skill to have,. He already said hes messes up quite a bit whenever hes try to play and talk at the same time.
if i was in tristins position after the failed 4 gate, a transition to robo immortals and zealots heavy one base plays might work as well cuz your oppenet will most definitly 100% expand so just pump out more immortals than him and zealots

Because the problem is that you dont know if your opponent is 4gating you. So you have to assume the worst, which happens to be 4gate, so you kinda have to 4gate him anyways because that appears to be the best counter in the first place. A vicious circle. And why is that so? Because 4gate is ridiculously powerful. And Im saying that as a protoss player.
Blizz HAS to do sth about that, cuz the current quote of 4gate vs 4gate is just sick.
@cocomoloco There's two ways that I can think of... If i know he's going heavy stalker, I like to go gas heavy, get several sentries, and use force fields to cut his army and let my zealot/stalker mix cut through half of his army. Then he's going to be on his heels the entire rest of the game.
The other way I do it is a 2 gate super fast robo, getting a couple sentries to split their stalkers (on the ramp, assuming a narrow ramp-don't do this on a big ramp), and then eat them with immortals.
@cocomoloco 3 gate robo will ALWAYS beat a 4 gate with correct micro and scouting - if he has a pylon in your base its not the 4gate thats killing you its the fact that you dont know theres a base in your base. If he tries to put a pylon near the edge of your base and warp on high ground, once again the fact that you are not scouting is what is killing you. A couple of sentries with your basic mix of gateway units + a robo churning out immortals can hold your ramp indefinitely
@x1shortboy If I were in Tristan's position and knew he was Protoss, I wouldn't have failed the 4 Gate to begin with. Day[9]s build is incredibly greedy, trying to squeeze out so much and cutting the critical defensive units like the Sentry. Any Korean 4 Gate would've killed him. A better executed 4 Gate likely would've killed him. Any Void Ray opening would've killed him (Day[9] can't deny scouting of such a quick Robo). Also, this build ONLY works decently vs 4 Gate and maybe Blink Stalker.
@MicksterZone You shouldn't wall off, experienced players would build a pylon at the bottom of your ramp, then make a unit run up your ramp to gain vision and start warping units into your base. This also applies to why force fields don't work very well in PvP.

not sure about a non-sentry build, a 4 gate with 4 sentries feel so much more stable, mostly because you can get ur zealots to hit marines and marauders and block off/delay some reinforcing units by your opponent. they are very effective when it comes to saving your dudes from lings too
There's a build with a 10 gate and a gas at 11 then cycore-robo asap (save cb and use for Nexus twice from 12-15), this allow you to get warp gate at about 5:40ish with 2 cb and at 6:00mark (where a 4gate usually hits) you could have 3 zealots and 2 immortals.
However this build is weak against stargate play, and since you don't have a stalker the enemy will scout your early robo. He could then fake a 4 gate to switch to stargate.
Why does it take you over 10 minutes to say: "I'm gonna show some strategies against 4-gate.". It's nice to listen to you, thats not the problem, i just don't have all day.
Is there any way to refine builds without a friend while playing as zerg?
Obviously you can't just drone as hard as possible and expect it to work in real play - is there some good benchmark for Zerg drone production in practice vs a negligible AI?
I still think 4 gate is optimum, if I seen all those immortals at the top of your ramp I would probably just stop and get about 3-4 sentries and ff to lock you in then fast expand, since I will be using gas, so yeah I would say that definitely stops 4 gate, but it stops map control which I believe you stated was probably more important
A way i keep units constantly producing, is by making that second assimilater (for the 4 gate) and moving out a slight bit later, that way, instead of worrying about having insufficient funds,I can warp in more sentries,because I'll have a large gas build up. So rather than going stalker/zealot i'd go zealot sentry.or maybe a few stalkers and more zealot sentry.because i'll have LOTS of gas stocked up from the 4 warped zealots, you'll warp in 2-3 sentries 1 zealots. Works pretty good for me.
@corayis1 generally, this style of warpgate is made to catch your opponent off guard, before they can mass too many marauders or roaches. 1 minute makes a world of difference against your opponents.
BTW time WG is done i have 2sentries 1 zealots, warp in3 more centries and keep FF ramp, a immortal is on its way, keep FF will get 2 immortals lots of zealots and like 4-6 stalkers.

I feel that if I hold off from a 4 gate and just defend they will gg and leave the game. I use siege tanks on the high ground and marines and marauders. If they don't gg then I can just run in and stomp on them either way :)
Also, my statement still stands that this daily has tought many people about dealing with a fourgate. I never said that this was _only_ about it, dailies usually apply to several situations.
Why do you have to get warpgate as protoss i mean if your just trying to hold off aggresion and not trying to put any on yet seems like a waste of money for an upgrade that is usless until you have the opportunity to be aggresive (this coming from a zerg player though s dont hate :P)?
@NothernSymphony Its instant build and the warpgate cycle is faster than regular building. For instance, it would take longer to build two stalkers than to warp in a stalker and then wait for the cooldown and warp in another stalker.
@NothernSymphony not only do you get an extra production cycle in, but it syncs up your unit buildtime (4 pop at once instead of 4x1... also warp gate tech is basically free (50/50) the only cost is time...you'd be shooting yourself in the foot to skip it since there's almost nothing gained by skipping it

Omg... Mass ghosts are a hard counter to very other unit in the game.... Especially the part where day9 successfully manages to use a combination of snipe, cloak and 12 tact nukes to destroy 1probe.... Simply amazing at 2:10:21
when u 4gate a toss, u want to be getting more zealots than stalkers.. if tristan went zealot heavy instead of stalker heavy he would have won .. considering that immortals are very ineffective against zealots
Why don't you just save the game at the point when you are at 14/assimilator then you don't have to drudge through from the beginning. This is what I do when I practise.
Tried it, the actuall working build. and worked fine! =D 6 PvP now won without 4gating... xD
And im mid / high Diamond..! never actually took the time to try to figure how to counter it ... haha i knew my micro would beat any reg 6min~ 4gate if i do a Defensive 4gate.. ( sentries stalker ) with transition into a expand / robo at 8-9mins :) i just got tired of doing the typical 4gate agaisnt Protoss -_-

when people 4 gate me as protoss i just go 2 gate + forge + cannons and add gate's accordingly
cannons cost 25 minerals more than stalkers and no gas allowing for sentry play.
The biggerst thing you must focus on when doing this is building placement. If possitions right 2 cannons can defeat a protoss because this build allows for alot of sentries.
It was a 2v2 placement match (For season 2) and my ally died within the first few minutes of the game to a reaper rush. I was teching to blink and had observes in one of the two opponents bases (The one with the reapers) then a massive army of void rays comes into my base which I defeat and mount a counter attack then a swarm of reapers enters my base which I rush back to defend it went on like this until l lose I leave to attack my base is attacked the reaper void ray combo was devastating

I feel that if I hold off from a 4 gate and just defend they will gg and leave the game. I use siege tanks on the high ground and marines and marauders. If they don't gg then I can just run in and stomp on them either way :)

Why do you have to get warpgate as protoss i mean if your just trying to hold off aggresion and not trying to put any on yet seems like a waste of money for an upgrade that is usless until you have the opportunity to be aggresive (this coming from a zerg player though s dont hate :P)?

@NothernSymphony Its instant build and the warpgate cycle is faster than regular building. For instance, it would take longer to build two stalkers than to warp in a stalker and then wait for the cooldown and warp in another stalker.

@NothernSymphony not only do you get an extra production cycle in, but it syncs up your unit buildtime (4 pop at once instead of 4x1... also warp gate tech is basically free (50/50) the only cost is time...you'd be shooting yourself in the foot to skip it since there's almost nothing gained by skipping it

Omg... Mass ghosts are a hard counter to very other unit in the game.... Especially the part where day9 successfully manages to use a combination of snipe, cloak and 12 tact nukes to destroy 1probe.... Simply amazing at 2:10:21

Why don't you just save the game at the point when you are at 14/assimilator then you don't have to drudge through from the beginning. This is what I do when I practise.

Tried it, the actuall working build. and worked fine! =D 6 PvP now won without 4gating... xD
And im mid / high Diamond..! never actually took the time to try to figure how to counter it ... haha i knew my micro would beat any reg 6min~ 4gate if i do a Defensive 4gate.. ( sentries stalker ) with transition into a expand / robo at 8-9mins :) i just got tired of doing the typical 4gate agaisnt Protoss -_-

when people 4 gate me as protoss i just go 2 gate + forge + cannons and add gate's accordingly
cannons cost 25 minerals more than stalkers and no gas allowing for sentry play.
The biggerst thing you must focus on when doing this is building placement. If possitions right 2 cannons can defeat a protoss because this build allows for alot of sentries.

It was a 2v2 placement match (For season 2) and my ally died within the first few minutes of the game to a reaper rush. I was teching to blink and had observes in one of the two opponents bases (The one with the reapers) then a massive army of void rays comes into my base which I defeat and mount a counter attack then a swarm of reapers enters my base which I rush back to defend it went on like this until l lose I leave to attack my base is attacked the reaper void ray combo was devastating
