Oh, John Cleese... was he, by any chance, held up by any means other than the feet around Kline's neck and Kline's hands on his legs? I would be quite impressed, and slightly afraid for the man's life, if he was not.

Yes, if you look carefully, you can see the wires up his trousers, and the dolly he's strapped to is hidden by his arms. He said it only took two takes to get the scene right, and he was scared out of his wits. It's worth getting the 20th anniversary version, which has the rehearsal for this scene, among many other wonderful bits.
