Great review! I have a question though, if i have a mic and i plug it into the sony recorder will it or can it record my friends and I talking while we play games online?
@whitewolf2689 thanks for feedback, to record what's being said online from your friends it would be from the headphone jack to your mic input of the recorder. The problem would be that maybe your voice won't be picked up. The other way to do it is to have them on a speaker and you talk into the mic at the same time. Not perfect but an idea.
@theijtema appreciate the feedback and glad you liked the review. I remember that day shooting poolside. The recorder you ordered is going to be great, seems like an amazing value. Have fun.
hi..look..i wanna make a movie..(low-cost-homemade) My question is..can i connect a shootgun mic extern? Because i use a samsung 220 full dh camcorder, but, this cam doesn't have external mic imput ! i need an answer.thanks up
@ThaiPredator i read the specs and seems like a nice unit. I like the USB plug, sd card option and pc/mac flexibility. The linear recording seems like the one I have but the difference could be in the microphones. If using for voice recordings seems like a winner, if audio not sure. Give it a try and let me know.
@alex1212a Hi, just checked out bhphotovideo and you are right. I like the Sony ICD-SX712 Digital Voice Recorder or pre-order the new Sony ICD-SX712D Digital Recorder + Voice-to-Print Software. Really depends on if you need the stereo mic and software. Remember, you can always buy dragon dictation separately and use other sony recorders if thats's your intended use. good luck
Hi Michael, thanks for the review. I was wondering if you use an external microphone with this recorder can you also use headphones to hear exactly what is being recorded?
@Cyblore glad you like the review, you can do both (use an external microphone and headphones) to record and listen. In addition you can set the recording levels and see the bars moving on the lcd screen. Great unit, I should pull that out of my drawer today!
@projectgadget Can you tell me up to how long each single recording can be? Can you record up to 1,2,3,4 or 5 hours continuously without creating another file? Or is it infinite as long as your memory allows?
How do I use Dragon naturally speaking on this device? There was no Dragon installation cd, as all that came with the pack was the audio studio cd and the digital voice editor cd. Thank you!!
@rav9116 I know they sell this unit with and without the dragon package so maybe you have the one without? How much did you pay? They ship a light version with the unit and you might want to consider buying the full package as it has more features. I bought it as a combo to save money and worked fine for my needs. Best of luck on returning or fixing the issue.
@projectgadget Which package would you recommend? Could I still transcribe my recordings on the ICD - SX750 if I were to purchase the STANDARD Dragon Naturally Speaking version 10?? Thank you for your help
@rav9116 I would recommend the cheapest one (not sure if v11 is out yet) that fits your needs. Be careful of the outdated packages at places like Walmart and Target and head over to Amazon to read reviews on individual versions before you buy. You probably only need standard v10 and should work with your recorder (better than the free version). good luck
How do I use Dragon naturally speaking on this device? I wasn't given any Dragon Software, all that came with the pack is the Audio Studio installation and the digital voice editor cd. Thank you
Can you show me how to take the recording I created and save it to my PC? What kind of a file would it get saved to - my music file? Need to know how to retrieve it later. Thanks!
@twitguy it has a plug at the top for a mic input and you can adjust the level of input but no external power source. Seems to me you could use a variety of mic's with it and has been really cool to input music streams for later playback or burning to mp3. thx
@projectgadget HEY, love the review but I have one question, what does the DR- Dragon software mean, for the ICD-SX850-DR? the reason why I'm asking you this is because I know your the right guy to ask ! thank you
@FORvsAGAINSTpodcast I would imagine it just refers to Dragon as a kit component. So ICD-SX850-DR includes Dragon Dictation but ICD-SX850 doesn't. thanks
I'm a verteran (sucker/owner) of a Sony mini disk player. When plugged in you could not access the disk contents without the sony interface software.
If I plug in this sony recorder am I presented with drive letter and direct access to the conents. Most of our users would simply email the mp3 file - software would just complicate the matter.
What I like about that Sony digital recorder is that you can record sounds and with some clever editing, create some unique sound effects for your YouTube videos.
A famous guy by the name of Ben Burtt (who was responsible for all sound effects for the STAR WARS, Star Trek, etc. films) by recording sounds and digitally editing them for video production.
This gives me some ideas for future YouTube videos. :o)
@TechTalkGuy yes, they include the windscreen and I use that to filter breathing sounds as well. You can have lots of fun with this for sound effects and good luck on the new ideas.
This is helpful because I'm looking for one of these bundled with Dragon, but you dropped the Dragon aspect of the review. Two questions:
1) How robust is the version of Dragon you get with the recorder? How is Dragon dictation like or not like Dragon home or preferred? Would it be better to buy Dragon and a separate recorder or is this version robust enough to meet simple needs beyond JUST dictation?
2) How easy is the import from recorder to Dragon? How clean is the resulting text file?
@NekoMouser Hi, the dragon they include is a lite version for recorder and sure that professional is a better choice. I opted for this for the bundled price option and is clearly aimed at dictation vs. voice commands or other uses. You want to make sure the recorder is on the dragon list (check their site first) & the version. It's very easy to transfer from recorder but depending on length/quality can take longer to transcribe. Also, pc is better to use with than mac (forget it). good luck
I'm looking to get a digital voice recorder for class, is this sony model the latest and best? and how well do u think it will record in a class room setting? what do you think of the olympus ws-500m?
@checkeredflags1 this wold work great in a classroom and maybe even be overkill on that use. You may find that a mono recorder would be fine and you can save some money. Please note that if your intention is to record the session and to transcribe with Dragon it wouldn't work great as dragon is really for your own voice. The olympus models are nice, just check what the output of the recordings are and compatibility with whether you are using mac or pc. good luck.

Enjoyed your exciting video, but it looks like this product has been discontinued.
Do a product search at bhphotovideo for Sony, Digital_Voice_Recorder.
Do you have another review in mind, with a similar product, by any chance?

Reviews for this recorder are hard to find, thanks for doing it. Question: what is the recorder body made of -- is it metal or plastic?

@Torel00 seems like metal but could be hard plastic. Either way it's well made and a quality recorder.
