  • Have one of these huge fuckers in my garden. My cat will only scratch it. I'm going to have to burn it alive.

  • @steveOo0o Seems a bit drastic... 'specially for the cat! :-))

  • Me and my dad found three of these guys at the back of our lawn a few days ago and they're still there. We don't have any Fuchsias in our garden but they seem to like the taste of our rhubarb plant (the ground there is littered with their poo xD). They're so adorable, I look for them every time I go feed the fishes. I really hope to see an Elephant Hawk Moth one day...it looks so beautiful

  • @lagoondiver If you are observing them regularly, may be you should bring your caterpillars in when they look as if they are about to pupate and keep them safe until the moths emerge. Mind you, I'm not sure what the signs are that you should look for.......Good luck.

  • No, not poisonous and no irritating hairs. Just handle it very gently.

  • @Gruntphuttock

So its one of those "soft" caterpillars?

  • @gneisenau321 You could say that. If you happen to step on one, they certainly spread out a long way!!! ;-))

  • @Gruntphuttock

What happened to the caterpillar in the video? Did you see it turn into a moth or did you release it?

  • @gneisenau321 Tempting to say we spit-roasted and fed a family of four for two days on it, but actually we just let it go in the garden and it was last seen chomping its way through the Fuchsias from where I assume it originally came. Haven't seen another one since.

  • i came across one of these in our garden it was hugh, wanted to pick it up but didnt know if it was poisenous............

  • what do they eat??????

  • @evostomppoowee2893 Fuchsias! It's in the drop-down text accompanying the video

  • what do they eat?

  • Found one of these yesterday the front end was retracted and the "Eyes only" were sticking out of a pile of leaves. My wife was born in Kenya and she thought she had found a poisonous Snake!

  • @zonkozonko Yeah, they can be quite startling if you don't know what they are. Surprisingly big too. Thank you for your comment

  • my cat had one of these earlier and i had no idea what it was, its such a bizarre creature!!!

  • @lilmissfarah Did it survive the experience? The cat, I mean. Kidding! I haven't seen any of these caterpillars this year, yet. Keep hoping to find one or two. We'll see. Thanks for visiting my channel.

  • Well done, though I expect your Jack Russell was unimpressed at you snatching away a week's rations from under his or her nose. I hope you warned your neighbours about what is now prowling around their garden!

    Thank you for commenting.

  • I just this minute rescued one of these from the family Jack Russell. Its safely in the neighbour's garden now.

  • Hi Jamie, Sorry to hear your Dad never got to see it. However, I expect it will be okay as I suspect most birds will find it pretty scary with those big black "eyes" that it displays when its attacked. Put a piece of cling film over the top of the box next time and prick a few small holes in it. Then you can let it go once your Dad has seen it, with a bit of luck. Pretty impressive caterpillars aren't they? Have you ever seen the moth they change into? It's a beauty!

    Thank you for your comment.

  • i found one in my garden today. i put it in a box to show me dad when he gets back from work but i went back out to see it and it was gone... i hope it escaped and wasn't eaten :(

  • We have just released one back into the garden, so beautiful once I found out what it was, had never seen anything like it before. Scared the life out of me when it pulled its snout in and out popped a big pair of eyes.

  • It was crawling about on the lawn...found it while cutting the grass. Fortunately it was spotted; couldn't really miss it. It was quite a big one and, I suspect, heading for somewhere to hide up and pupate. I released it back into the garden near our Fuchia plants. Most impressive looking beast. I used to find them as a kid when I was growing up on Dartmoor. Privet Hawkmoths and their caterpillars too. Prefer the Elephants. Thanks for commenting. Always good to know somebody appreciates them.

  • love it! I've caught the adult ones with my mercury vapour lamp.. they are truely incredible. I'm looking for Elephant caterpillars but can't find one.. where did you get this one? jamie benton jones
