Hi, does anyone know if you can program the time capsule to only backup in the hours you need it like, for instance, between 5-10 mon - fri and all day weekends?
If not, if i hooked it up to a timer plug, would this damage it?
Can you stream of the time capsule, i.e if you put a video file on the hard drive can you stream it? also same question with a usb hard drive attached to it?
You could turn it off but I'm not sure why you would want to. The Time Capsule CAN be used as your home router so you can leave it on. If you turn it off I would make sure that your Macs are not in the middle of a backup. You may corrupt your backup if you kill power in the middle of a backup.
@Chillash007 It is not a DSL modem. You need a separate modem that works with your ISP to connect to the TC via ethernet. However, it is a wireless router.
I could not find your other Videos on the Time Capsule. If you can send a link, that would be great. I'm getting one in a couple of days & preparing myself in advance. Thank you.
P.S. Don't doubt that most people don't have Interference in their homes. I'm sure we all have some. Congrats on your Child!
I see this might be abit old, maybe you figured it out.
You can drag & drop your iTunes Library to a Time Capsule Drive or any external hooked up to it & then open iTunes and goto Preferences > Advanced > change the default path the iTunes library on your Time Capsule.
For mac users you can even do that with your iPhoto library & keep it off your system.
Just drag & drop your iPhoto library package & then hold Option while launching iPhoto & select the location on the time capsule.
How do you find out how much space there is on the Time Capsule Hard Drive? Just got mine & get info shows 0 KB and in Disk Utility the TC does not show up. How do I get to see the Properties (Size, etc...) of the Hard Drive?
A few places you can Finder>File>New Finder Window the TC should appear on the left side. click that, open the folder then look at the bottom of that Finder window and it will say X amount remaining Otherwise Spotlight search for AirPort Utility click on the timecapsule in the left side panel click manual set up Then Disks tab in the top pane of the APU it should say the name you gave then below that the name of ur drive. Click on that & the right side pane will show the all the info
I would suggest checking your Internet connection. You may also want to plug your computer directly into the Time Capsule to eliminate possible wireless problems.
1st I would plug your computer directly into your cable modem or router and take the TC out of the mix to make sure that you an get online. Once you have confirmed your Internet is up then make sure there is no power to the TC and plug it back up to your Internet connection and plug it back in. Connect directly to the TC and configure
They REALLY should through a firewire 800 port on the time capsule to allow you to use the hard drive hard-wired as well as wirelessly. Sure, 802.11n is fast compared to older-generation wireless, but when you are doing an initial backup of over 200GBs of data it takes forever... A typical throughput of 100 m/bits per sec is ok for incremental backups, but horrible for the initial one.
I agree. I would LOVE a firewire option on the time capsule for external hard disks. When I have done the initial backup I have hooked my Mac up to the time capsule with an Ethernet cable and left it over night.
i just got a new mac book but i got soooooooooooooooooo much music on it its filled would i be able to use the time Capsule to store my music this is my first mac thanks
If it will fit then I say use it. Personally I decided to buy a Drobo and store all of my multimedia that way. It is plugged in via USB to the back of the Time Capsule. Make sure you consider how you want to access your music through iTunes though. If you want ot build a library with ALL of your music you can tell iTunes not to copy it local to your MAC. Then you don't have your music on the go though. I just copy over what I want to listen to. Hope this helps.
Was just wondering if you can use the time capsule as the drive from which you can stream music , videos etc onto Apple Macs, PC, and Ps3? I do not want it for back up, just as the hard drive from where i can wirelessly stream my media.??
The short answer is yes. This is what I have been working on as well but I have had problems. My advice would be to consider your network setup carefully. If at all possible keep a hard line between the computer serving your videos, your time capsule, and your device whether it be an AppleTV, PC, PS3 whatever. I realize that this may not be possible for all your devices but you may need to consider lower res versions of your video especially for clean streaming. I'm working on a hard line setup.
That's right. The hard drive is installed inside the router box and is available to the computers on your network for backups and data storage. All in all a pretty cool device.
I wouldn't say that but there are some things to consider. I just posted a video response to my original message. Check that out when you get a chance and let me know if you have any questions.
The backup is not very fast but I never notice it. It depends on how you have your computers set up. If your Mac is wired directly to the Time Capsule with a network cable then it will be faster than if it is wireless network.
The good thing is that the backup runs in the background and you don't have to worry about it. I rarely notice when my backup is running.
I also never notice an impact on my Internet connection. It doesn't hog your bandwidth.
However, after having the Time Capsule for a while I think I would recommend getting an Airport Extreme, a USB hub, and 1 or more external hard drives. You can set these drives as your Time Capsule backup drive.
The all in one nature of the Time Capsule is nice and some may want that but external USB drives give you the possibility for more storage. It also makes it scalable and easier to replace a drive if one dies on you.
Hello, I'm not saying that the Time Capsule is bad it is great. i was thinking of getting one for myself. Thankfully i changed my mind if you want something like time Capsule you should get the Airport Express or Extreme and get a 500Gb hard drive at Best Buy for 119.00 it is a time capsule but cheaper. Note i am not saying anything negative about Time Capsule . Air port Express and Extreme can do all what Tim Capsule can do except backing up.
Na man, I have the 2.4 GHZ 4GB RAM and 750GB hard drive... They literally released the 3.0 GHZ 2 days after My iMac came in... I don't care though, mine's fine and it's very fast.
Oh well. I have no complaints. The iMac I have is perfectly fine with me, and I recommend it to all Mac lovers. It's great for everything (especially cuz I couldn't do SHIT on my old iBook G4).

Can this be used as JUST a backup device, and have nothing whatsoever to do with my router / modem ?

Apple has pretty much abandoned the TIme Capsule.
MobileMe is unpopular as well, and this device was suppose to augment MobileMe's slow and small 20GB online capacity.

do I have to keep my time capsule in 24- 7?

Would the TC work as a stand alone device ( to replace current wireless router DSL) ?!?!?!

while backing up will it interfere with my internet connection?
