  • Oh Dear, Old Cyril was indeed a prolific song writer and immensley popular folk singer, it's said out of every 2 sea Shanty's you'll hear, Cyril probably wrote one

  • The reverb on this video makes it painful to listen to.

  • Sorry, all, for the misinformation. I heard someone doing this song at an open mike and that is what was said. I should have done a better job, fact checking. Though I still get some credit (I hope) for recognizing and loving a great song of the sea. And now, if you'll pardon me, I'm off to learn more about Cyrl.

  • Hi Gene. afraid you are wrong about Cyril Tawney only writing one song. I knew Cyril and used to go to a folk club that he ran in Plymouth. He wrote many , many songs. He was the first english folk singer to become professional and made a living at it until his death a few years ago.

  • OK... After insulting Late Great Cyril Tawny it wasn't sounding promising, I stuck with it - I've suffered Less Pain in the dentists chair! OUCH!!

  • I've always found it interesting that Cyril Tawney wrote both "The Gray Funnel Line" and "Chicken On A Raft."

  • thanks for your reply Richard. I apologise if my tone seemed somewhat harsh. Cyryl got me through a serious injury, encouraged my guitar playing and performing.. my first song in public was one of his (diesel and shale) and now some 45 years later my most requested song is still 'grey funnel line'.

We met rarely but he was a major influence on my life.. I have to say he is greatly missed. I enjoyed your rendition of 'down and out'. best wishes ..Gordon..

  • your information is just wrong and an insult to the memory of a prolific song writer and performer...do some research please....

  • Since Gene can not respond I will do it for him. You are correct. Cyril Tawney wrote many songs includeing Cheering the Queen, Chicken on a Raft, Five-foot Flirt, Grey Funnel Line,

Sally Free and Easy, Stanley the Rat, The Lean and Unwashed Tiffy, The Suit of Grey,

    and The Oggie Man.

    On a Monday Morning

  • sadly you seem to know nothing about this most prolific songwriter and performer. As you obviously have the internet may i suggest you do some research about a man who when he died was the longest performing folksinger in the Uk.

I do however like your guitar....
